Reborn as a Landlord
Chapter 1791 - 913: Everyone Looks Forward to Better Days (Part 2)
Da Niuniu knew Lian Yaya was leaving, and she felt reluctant to part. Da Niuniu told Lian Yaya that she and her family didn’t want Yaya to leave. Lian Yaya then asked if Lady Zhou didn’t want her to leave either, and Da Niuniu answered without hesitation that yes, Lady Zhou also didn’t want her to go. Da Niuniu noticed that Yaya was reluctant to leave and suggested that Yaya speak with Lady Zhou and ask her to let Yaya stay.
Even though the little girl was young, she understood that Lady Zhou called the shots in the family.
Just a few words between children gave Lian Yaya the courage. Life often goes this way; minor things sometimes lead to significant changes, catching people off guard.
No matter what, Lian Yaya stayed, and Lady Zhou, Lian Yaya, Lian Shouyi, and Lady He were all delighted.
...
The three Eastern Wing Rooms were being dismantled quickly and were almost done by evening. Lady Zhou, Lady Chiang, Lian Yaya, and Da Niuniu prepared the meal and arranged for the workers to have a meal.
After the meal, the workers left, and Erlang returned from the county at that time.
The house was already dismantled, so accommodation for the night became an issue for Lian Shouyi and Lady He. Lady Zhou naturally didn’t want the couple to stay in the Upper Room, but since they were about to leave soon and Lian Yaya stayed, Lady Zhou, feeling gratified, allowed the couple to stay in the West Wing Room for one night.
However, Lian Shouyi refused to accept such kindness. He told Lady Zhou that he was a man of reputation, and given Lady Zhou’s dislike of him, he wouldn’t thicken his skin to stay.
"I’m better off away from you. Don’t be fooled by how things look now; your hardship lies ahead. You’ve disrupted your children’s future. Later, you’ll be relying on Shouren’s side — are they good people? They are much smarter than us straight-talking people; you won’t win against them! It was you who severed the ties with me, so don’t ask for my help then!"
Lian Shouyi chose not to stay in the West Wing Room, stating he would go to Erlang’s place.
"We are building the house there soon; it’s quite far to travel back and forth, not convenient." That was Lian Shouyi’s exact words.
Lady He also eagerly wanted to move into Erlang’s place, eager to play the role of a mother-in-law and have the daughter-in-law serve her.
Both Erlang and Luo Xiaoyan had become well-established at the large carriage inn over the past two years and both had received salary raises. With occasional support from Lian Manman’s family, the Luo family was genuinely doing well.
Yet, despite this, the Luo family hadn’t rebuilt their house. The house they lived in now was much worse than the Eastern Wing Rooms of the old home and wasn’t spacious.
Lian Shouyi and Lady He were aware of this, but nonetheless, they insisted on moving and staying temporarily, both being people who love leisure and luxury without hardship, doing this likely with ulterior motives at heart.
"The Old Luo family has benefited from our Old Lian family’s grace over these years. Erlang has served them like a beast of burden, contributing more than a son should. That should have been ours; Luo Xiaoyan should attend to us. We’ll move, let the Old Luo family understand the rules... from now on, they must rely on us," Lian Shouyi spoke secretly to Lady He.
"Yes, we’ll move there. Not just Luo Xiaoyan, even the old couple should serve us to repay their daughter’s debts," Lady He agreed emphatically.
Erlang and Luo Xiaoyan were unaware of Lian Shouyi and Lady He’s private plans, but when the couple wanted to move, they agreed without protest.
Initially, when Erlang followed Luo Xiaoyan to live in the Luo Family Village, there was a prior agreement; they wouldn’t shirk the responsibilities of being the eldest son and daughter-in-law.
Liulang didn’t follow Lian Shouyi and Lady He in relocating. Alone, he carried his bedding and moved into the schoolroom of Lian Manman’s family.
Once Lian Shouyi and Lady He moved to Luo Family Village, the next day, they transported the dismantled house materials, brick, and stone from the old home to Luo Family Village, started digging the foundation, and began building a house next to Luo Xiaoyan’s family.
Suddenly, the old home became quiet, and Luo Xiaoyan’s family in Luo Family Village grew lively.
Lian Shouyi wanted to build a house, so Luo Xiaoyan’s family got busy. Luo Xiaoying took a day off, helped with two days of labor, then returned to work, while Erlang asked for a long leave from the large carriage inn. On the second day after Lian Shouyi and Lady He moved to Luo Family Village, Erlang and Luo Xiaoyan came to visit Lian Manman’s family.
Erlang was full of worry, and Luo Xiaoyan held Er Niuniu, with seeming anxiety on her face.
"...He said he wants to build five rooms, even wants fancy things like glazed windows like Uncle’s house. I questioned if he had enough money, but he said he didn’t have any and wanted me to pay, claiming the house would be mine afterward," Erlang said, speaking with Lian Shouxin, his shoulders drooping.
Lian Shouyi used to have a three-room Eastern Wing at the old home. Combined with the brick and stone from dismantling the pigpen and vegetable garden, rebuilding a three-room house would just about suffice. Spending more would be limited. However, if they wished to build five rooms with extravagance, the cost would be substantial.
Erlang naturally saved some money over the years, but it was all with Luo Xiaoyan. That money was meant for rebuilding the Luo Family house and helping Luo Xiaoying marry.
"I don’t have that much money, so I suggested we build three rooms first, since it would be enough for now. Once there’s more money later, we can expand. I said this, and my parents scolded me terribly," he said, as Erlang just allowed his head to drop.
Lian Shouyi and Lady He scolded him very harshly, and of course included Luo Xiaoyan and the Luo family, accusing them of being improper by hiding Erlang’s earnings, having their own son but letting the son-in-law support them. They called Luo Xiaoyan improper for favoring her own family and exploiting her husband.
The entire Luo family received a fierce scolding.
