Chapter 75: His Curiosity

What?

Han Ruochen looked at Madam Yun and then turned to look at Zhai Muchen. She had no idea what was going on. How did the situation take such a drastic turn?

"There is no need—"

"Alright," said Zhai Muchen before Han Ruochen could refuse.

Startled, Han Ruochen turned to look at the man, as she could not understand what was going on. Since when did this great commander suddenly end up getting so much free time on his hands? If she were not wrong, this man was so busy in her past life that he ended up getting divorced, as his wife couldn’t withstand the loneliness and ended up cheating on him. Since neither of them had any children, and the woman was at fault, the divorce happened swiftly.

Zhai Muchen was the kind of man who didn’t even have time for his wife. So, how could he have the time to drop her off?

"Commander Zhai," Han Ruochen began carefully, as she was worried that she would be disturbing the man. "There is no need to drop us off; our village is not far from the county. We can take the bus."

"What are you saying, Ruochen?" Yun Xiaoxiao suddenly exclaimed as she clapped her hands together. "The last bus might have already left. How are you going to take the bus at this time? It’s already four in the evening."

Han Ruochen frowned and looked at the grandfather clock sitting against the wall. It was indeed just as Yun Xiaoxiao said. It was already four in the evening, and all buses must have already stopped running by now. Sighing, she turned to look at Zhai Muchen, feeling a bit resistant. It was not that she had something against Zhai Muchen. It was just that after the sufferings that she went through at the hands of the Yang brothers, she just couldn’t trust any man.

Even when she knew that Zhai Muchen was a really good man and wouldn’t hurt her at all.

Zhai Muchen also sensed her resistance and simply smiled at her.

"Miss Han," like a gentleman, he motioned for Han Ruochen to walk in front of him.

Han Ruochen sighed. She could only follow the man outside with Han Beijiang.

"It seems like Miss Han doesn’t trust me," Zhai Muchen began as if he were making a casual remark about the weather. Though his voice was calm, Han Ruochen was anything but calm. She almost bumped into the pillar in front of her and then turned to look at the man behind her and stammered, "W—what?"

"There is no need to hide your true feelings, Miss Han." Zhai Muchen crossed his arms and leaned back. "I can sense that you are wary of me. While I do understand your feelings, I do not understand why you are wary of me."

Han Ruochen stared at the man, her eyes flickering with a complicated look. "Commander Zhai, I do not understand—when did I ever say that I was wary of you?"

"Miss Han, I deal with all sorts of criminals all the time," said Zhai Muchen. He noticed the sweat on Han Ruochen’s forehead and the flickering pupils of her eyes. Even though the woman was pretending to be fine, the worries in her eyes were too clear for him to miss. "I can see what goes on within the mind of most people. And I can see that you are afraid of me. Can I dare to ask why?"

Hah?

Han Ruochen felt a bit troubled by the sudden questioning. Her expression twisted a little, and she ran her free hand through her hair before saying to Zhai Muchen, "I do not understand how any of this is your concern, Commander Zhai. After what happened to me, it’s only normal that I am a bit wary of men. The man I trusted cheated on me with my sister and tried to ruin my reputation just to help my sister. What is weird about my wariness toward men?"

After she finished speaking, she said to Zhai Muchen, "Anyway, I am not asking you to drop me off. If you find it insulting, then you can just go ahead with your own tasks. I do not need your help."

Once she finished speaking, Han Ruochen turned around on her feet and started walking away. She had no intention of relying on a man. After all, the last time she dared to dream of depending on a man, he showed her why she should have never chosen to trust a man. Especially him.

Anyway, Yang Jianming was a good man to the world, but he was a demon to her.

And Han Ruochen thought that she knew him. She didn’t even know Zhai Muchen—so, her being wary was not something that was supposed to be unexpected, was it?

Zhai Muchen simply watched her calmly before turning his gaze to one side. "I see. You do have a valid reason."

He unravelled his hands and, without saying anything else, marched over to the car that was parked right under the archway outside the mansion. Han Ruochen watched him go before following him inside the car.

"To where, Miss Han?" asked Zhai Muchen, his eyes staring at Han Ruochen through the rearview mirror.

And even though Han Ruochen knew that it was rude of her to sit at the back, when the man was driving, her mistrust of men made it impossible for her to sit in the front. She would rather sit in the back so that it would be easier for her to jump in case something were to go awry.

"You can drop us off at the entrance of the village. There is a small house under the name of Old Madam Han, Commander Zhai."

Old Madam Han? Zhai Muchen narrowed his eyes. Why not the Han family?

Interesting. It seemed like Han Ruochen was shrouded in way more mysterious air than he thought she was. However, even though he was curious about her, he still pursed his lips and turned the ignition on before heading toward the village where Han Ruochen lived.
