70s Delicate Girl: A Guide to Being a Rich Woman
Chapter 482: Archaeological Team
The children let out exclamations of surprise, even though they hadn’t seen the inside of the mountain themselves, they felt like they could already imagine the scene.
"Those heartless bastards, people can’t even rest in peace after they’ve died, and they still have to dig up graves." Old Xu grumbled, smoking a cigarette.
"Exactly! Fortunately, Mumu and the others caught those people." Madam Chen agreed.
"Grandpa, Grandma, tomb raiding is wrong, but the state also has specialized archaeologists, who also excavate ancient tombs." Xu Mumu said with a smile.
After dinner was ready and waiting for a while, Yin Yang and the others finally returned. Besides Yin Yang, the Xu Jiang brothers had excitement written all over their faces.
There was no need for Xu Mumu and the others to ask, Xu Jiang excitedly recounted what happened at the police station.
The authorities wanted to commend Xu Mumu and the others for catching these grave robbers, and a major site had been discovered here, so an archaeological team would be coming over to conduct a rescue excavation in a few days.
The team leader also went over to take a look and learned of the whole situation.
The house was especially lively during dinner that evening.
The archaeological team came even faster than Xu Mumu expected. The next day, following the police who came to understand the situation, the archaeological team also arrived. Quite a lot of people came, and upon learning that the tomb was located deep in the mountains, everyone brought their survival gear.
Xu Mumu and Yin Yang packed up briefly, and this time the Xu Jiang brothers also joined them, heading toward the mountains.
As they headed up the mountain, many people from the brigade came to watch the excitement. If it weren’t for the team leader, those young men wouldn’t have been ready to go to work; they were prepared to join in and take a look.
Xu Mumu walked leisurely on the mountain, and compared to her, those from the archaeological team carried a lot of things, naturally slowing down their pace, especially with the tools they had to carry. The exact size of the tomb was unclear, but based on what Yin Yang said about the items those people took out, the tomb must be large, belonging to some ancient notable.
They didn’t bring any rations this time, but they did bring a pot and some seasonings. When they got hungry on the mountain, Xu Mumu would directly hunt wild game to eat. Her skills left the archaeological team dumbfounded—was catching wild chickens really this easy? It’s not like they hadn’t stayed in the wild before.
The aroma of roast chicken was much more enticing than the rations they brought, and many people quietly swallowed their saliva, eager to taste it.
Xu Mumu asked Yin Yang to give the extra two roasted chickens to the archaeological team members.
By doing this, Xu Mumu and the others won these people’s goodwill again, although she didn’t really need it.
That night they rested in the cave Xu Mumu and the others had fixed up earlier. There were quite a few people, and the cave was just big enough to accommodate everyone, with the archaeological team arranging night watch duties.
By the afternoon of the next day, they finally reached the robbers’ tunnel. Xu Mumu removed the stones at the cave entrance, impressing the archaeological team again with her strength.
The items inside the cave were still intact, and the archaeological team was thrilled to see them.
Several people went over to the robbers’ tunnel to inspect it, but Xu Mumu and the others didn’t join in; they didn’t want to enter and risk damaging anything inside.
Xu Mumu, along with Yin Yang and the Xu Jiang brothers, made their way over to the hickory tree, having brought sacks with them.
They had already gathered all the hickories on the ground previously, but there were still plenty left on the trees.
"Second Uncle, you all stand back a bit while I shake down the hickories from the tree." Xu Mumu stood under the hickory tree, waving to the others to stand back.
Once they stepped back, Xu Mumu started shaking the tree vigorously, and the hickories fell quickly. There were several hickory trees here, and since no one came to gather them, she shook down a lot of hickories, all in considerable quantities.
"This is way too much." Xu Jiang said excitedly.
"These are all with their outer skin on, we still need to sun-dry them when we get back, and we can only get about half of them out as kernels." Xu Mumu said with a smile, helping to gather the hickories into the sacks.
"Even half is pretty good." Xu Po was also quite excited, as they had never been this deep into the mountains before.
On the way back, they spotted many edible mushrooms, collecting what they could. They also picked some wild fruits with a pleasant taste, filling their baskets.
In the end, they filled three sacks to the brim; Xu Mumu was quite pleased but noted it was a bit inconvenient to carry everything back.
When they returned to the camp, the archaeological team was busy; some went down into the tomb, while others were setting up tents near the entrance. The tomb was large and a burial complex, requiring more manpower and tools since it was evidently of significant archaeological value.
Xu Mumu and the others stored the gathered hickories in the cave, having cleared a large area around it.
Yin Yang was called over by a professor, who discussed their objectives.
The professor asked them to take someone with them when they returned the next day so he could go back and bring more people over to help. Even though they had made markers along the way, more guidance was needed as the helpers would need direction.
Yin Yang agreed, though it did seem a bit of a hassle.
In the evening, Xu Mumu caught a wild mountain goat. With the archaeological team’s help, they quickly roasted the whole goat over a campfire.
On the way back, with a lot of stuff in tow, the Xu Jiang brothers put two sticks through the hickory sacks and carried them home like that.
There were no dangers on this journey, most likely because of the increased human activity, which scared the animals into hiding.
After two days’ walk, they finally emerged again. The Xu Jiang brothers were quite exhausted, but the kids were overjoyed with the haul they brought back.
A few days earlier, the hickories Xu Mumu and the others brought back were roasted by Qian Ying, and the flavor was excellent, quickly becoming a favorite among the children. Now, with Xu Jiang bringing back so many hickories, the kids were ecstatic.
"Dad, Dad, where did you pick all these hickories? I want to go too." Xu Tao popped one open, savoring the fragrant kernel inside; it was absolutely delicious.
"It’s far away, and with your small arms and legs, you better not run around. Stay home and study hard." Xu Po said, patting his son’s head.
"The mountains can be dangerous; you can only play at the foot of the mountain." Xu Mumu said earnestly.
"Big sis, I’ll listen to you, unlike brother who doesn’t." Xu Jiaojiao puffed up her chest, casting a side glance at her brother, clearly making her point.
"Yes, Jiaojiao is the most obedient." Xu Mumu laughed.
The hickories were laid out on several large bamboo trays in the courtyard by Madam Chen and the others to dry. Once the peels were dry, they could be cracked open and eaten.
People who came to Xu Family to see the commotion couldn’t help but feel envious seeing so many goods brought back.
