After Being Cheated On, I Became My Ex's Uncle's Pampered Sweetheart
Chapter 37: The Truth of the Liver Donation is Revealed, Throwing the Lawson Family into Chaos
Mrs. Lawson’s gaze grew colder. "Just as I thought. A petty person enjoying her moment of triumph! Utterly classless!"
Charlotte Vaughn wished Autumn Woods would just get rid of Eve Vaughn already. She continued to fan the flames, saying, "And not only that, but when she ran into me and my mom at the store the other day, she said... she said something about Julian..."
Autumn Woods’s eyes sharpened as she immediately pressed, "What did she say about Julian?"
Charlotte Vaughn lowered her voice. "She said Julian was going to die young and cursed me to be a widow. If this goes on, she’ll definitely team up with Jonah Spencer to get harsh revenge on us! She’s still holding a grudge about the liver donation!"
Autumn Woods spoke, enunciating every word, "We can’t let her stay in Rivaster any longer. Otherwise, it’s only a matter of time before something happens!"
As she said this, a plan was already forming in her mind.
"Charlotte, you should head back first. I have to go teach a class at the medical school now. After class, I’ll go find Eve Vaughn. Don’t worry, she can’t make any real trouble!"
Autumn Woods got out of the car and walked head held high through the university gates.
Eve Vaughn never expected that the professor for her internal medicine class on the cardiovascular system would be Autumn Woods.
Listening to Autumn Woods introduce herself on the stage, Eve Vaughn couldn’t help but sneer inwardly.
’This sanctimonious, highly educated woman... a renowned medical professor from a major hospital, yet so filthy and disgusting on the inside.’
During the lecture, Autumn Woods’s gaze landed on her multiple times, but she never got a reaction from Eve Vaughn.
When the bell rang, Autumn Woods announced in front of the whole class, "Alright, that’s all for today’s lecture. Thank you, everyone. Eve Vaughn, stay behind. The rest of you may leave."
Since this was the last class of the day, the students were all rushing to the cafeteria to get food.
Soon, everyone had left, and only Eve Vaughn and Autumn Woods remained in the classroom.
Eve Vaughn found it almost ironic. Even after deceiving her, this woman had the audacity to keep her after class so brazenly, as if it were a perfectly normal interaction between a professor and a student.
There was a time when she had respected and revered Autumn Woods. Even when the woman disapproved of her relationship with Julian Lawson, Eve Vaughn had never held any resentment toward her.
She had even wondered what she was doing wrong, how she could get Mrs. Lawson to accept her.
But now, her attitude toward Autumn Woods was completely different.
"Should I call you Professor Woods, or Mrs. Lawson?" Eve Vaughn sneered. "Don’t tell me your son’s liver failure has made a comeback? Do you want me to go donate another one to him?"
Autumn Woods caught the sarcasm in Eve Vaughn’s tone and her lips curled into a smirk. Where was the intellectual and elegant professor from the lecture just now?
She said, "Someone with a powerful backer really is different. Even the way you talk is much bolder than before!"
Eve Vaughn met Mrs. Lawson’s gaze fearlessly and said through gritted teeth, "I’m the one who saved your son’s life. Why shouldn’t I be bold? You, on the other hand, with your grand deception and your two-faced act—what right do you have to call yourself a professor?"
At home, Autumn Woods was Mrs. Lawson of the Lawson Family; outside, she was a renowned medical professor. When had she ever been accused like this by anyone?
Faced with Eve Vaughn’s merciless accusation, Autumn Woods’s face turned ashen. She took a prepared check from her bag and said, "There’s enough money in here for you and your mother to live comfortably for the rest of your lives. Take the money and leave Rivaster. Go wherever you want, just don’t let me see you again, and don’t you dare disturb Julian and Charlotte’s life."
Eve Vaughn’s gaze swept lightly over the check before she asked disdainfully, "Are you afraid I’ll tell Julian Lawson the truth? Afraid I’ll throw your Lawson Family into chaos?"
"Ha." Autumn Woods chuckled as if she’d heard a joke. "You don’t have what it takes. Julian is my son. He’ll believe me, not you. You’re far too naive to fight me."
Eve Vaughn raised an eyebrow. "Then why offer me a check? A highly respected figure in the medical world, saying all this to a mere student. Don’t you think it’s beneath you?"
Autumn Woods took a deep breath, suppressing her anger. "Eve Vaughn, don’t think you can act so fearlessly just because you have some looks and Jonah Spencer on your side! Do you have any idea what kind of family the Spencers are? He will never marry you! Why waste your youth just to end up with a ruined reputation?"
’Eve Vaughn knew. The day Mason Lawson came to pick her up, he was probably driving Jonah Spencer’s car. Combined with Jonah helping her with the lawsuit, it was no wonder Lana Chambers and Mrs. Lawson assumed she had some kind of relationship with him.’
Eve Vaughn didn’t bother to explain. Whether it was Jonah Spencer or Mason Lawson, they had no proof, but they would be wary of the power she seemed to have behind her.
Otherwise, Autumn Woods wouldn’t have been scared enough to seek her out personally and try to buy her off.
Eve Vaughn looked at her and said, word by word, "Mrs. Lawson, money and power might solve a lot of problems, but not everyone will bow to them. I’m sorry, but I reject your offer. I was born and raised in Rivaster, and I’m not going anywhere. Only people with a guilty conscience need to hide, isn’t that right?"
With that, she stood up and walked away calmly under Autumn Woods’s dark gaze.
Autumn Woods’s harsh voice sounded from behind her. "Eve Vaughn, you’ll soon be crawling back to me, begging for forgiveness! An egg can never break a stone!"
Eve Vaughn stopped in her tracks. Although she felt a flicker of fear, she turned back with composure, her tone laced with clear provocation. "Then let’s just see about that!"
...
For the next two days, Eve had Autumn Woods’s class every day.
If the cardiovascular system weren’t one of the most important topics in internal medicine, she really wouldn’t have wanted to attend her lectures.
But Autumn Woods continued to find all sorts of ways to pick on her and put her down.
For instance, during classroom Q&A, Autumn Woods would pretend to call on students randomly. But the questions she asked other students were easy, while the ones for Eve Vaughn were always exceptionally difficult, even drawing on the latest international research.
Although Eve Vaughn was a good student, she was only a junior. How could she possibly know about cutting-edge research in a specialized field?
Autumn Woods put on the air of a strict professor and said, "Miss Vaughn, this is the third time you’ve failed to answer my question. The only homework I assign after every class is for you to prepare for the next lesson. It’s clear you haven’t been doing it."
Eve Vaughn knew this was Autumn Woods’s revenge for defying her. She didn’t offer any defense, deciding that discretion was the better part of valor.
But unexpectedly, Autumn Woods escalated things further. "Homework is part of your final grade. Since you’ve failed to complete it three times in a row, I am docking your final grade for this course by 30%."
A murmur went through the classroom. After all, this was the first time Eve Vaughn, the top student in their class, had ever been treated this way.
And what did losing 30% of her grade mean?
If the final exam was out of 100, another student could lose 11 points and still pass, but if Eve Vaughn lost 11 points, she would fail.
Some of the students felt a little sympathy for Eve Vaughn, but most were just enjoying the drama.
Eve Vaughn stared coldly at Autumn Woods, her eyes seeming to say: ’Is this the extent of your power?’
’But she should have known just how despicable and vile Autumn Woods was ever since she was tricked into donating her liver to Julian Lawson!’
Eve Vaughn had thought this would be the extent of Autumn Woods’s revenge.
But unexpectedly, when she went to the hospital to visit her mother after class that day, a doctor found her. "You’re the daughter of the patient in bed 36, Aurelia Quinn, correct?"
Following his superior’s orders, the doctor said in a business-like tone, "Please complete the discharge procedures for your mother immediately, before tomorrow evening. This is a private hospital, and a VIP client has booked the entire rehabilitation department starting tomorrow."
