After Being Cheated On, I Became My Ex's Uncle's Pampered Sweetheart
Chapter 78: Take You With Me Tonight?
Eve Vaughn’s head was buzzing with anger. She never imagined this family could be so despicable, actually using her grandmother as leverage!
Given how much her grandmother doted on her younger son, half of this house would definitely end up with Jason Vaughn after she passed away.
Eve Vaughn couldn’t stand the mere thought of it.
’Why should half of her father’s blood and sweat end up in their hands?’
Seeing her fall silent, Lana Chambers smiled smugly and said, "Nothing to say now, huh? It’s fine. If you don’t believe us, feel free to go ask Jonah Spencer and see what he says."
After dropping that line, Jason Vaughn and his wife swaggered off, looking unbearably smug. Even their arrogant retreating figures seemed to scream of their triumph.
Eve Vaughn had initially wanted to consult Jonah Spencer to see if what they said was true.
But Jonah Spencer handled major cases worth hundreds of millions, even billions. She didn’t have the nerve to bother him with her family matters.
Besides, she didn’t want to run to Mason Lawson or his friends for help every time she encountered a problem.
It would make her feel incompetent.
In the end, Eve Vaughn opened her web browser and searched for inheritance laws.
The articles on inheritance were very clear. Just as Lana Chambers and her husband had said, both she and her grandmother were first-in-line heirs.
But how could she possibly accept that?
Her grandmother had always been indifferent toward her father, only ever having eyes for her uncle.
If the house went to her grandmother, it would ultimately end up in the hands of Lana Chambers’ family.
Eve Vaughn thought silently, ’This time, even if I ask Mason Lawson for help, it’s probably a lost cause.’
’After all, no matter how capable he is, he can’t change the law.’
Just then, her phone rang.
Eve Vaughn was a little surprised. She had just been thinking of him, and his call came.
After she answered, the man’s clear, magnetic voice came from the other end. "What are you up to?"
"In class, of course," Eve Vaughn said, exasperated. "From Monday to Friday, it’s just class every day. What else would I be doing?"
Mason Lawson immediately noticed her low spirits and asked, "Who upset you again? You’re not happy?"
Eve Vaughn quickly adjusted her mood, not wanting him to worry about her.
The young woman’s voice deliberately turned cheerful as she said to him, "No one upset me, and I’m not unhappy. By the way, are you calling me because you’re planning to take me somewhere nice to eat again tonight?"
"You little foodie!"
Mason Lawson said dotingly, then added, "I have a dinner meeting with drinks tonight, and it’ll probably run very late, so I won’t come see you. You be good, you hear?"
Eve Vaughn always felt that sometimes, Mason Lawson didn’t treat her like a girlfriend at all; it was more like he was coaxing a small child.
She said indignantly, "So, will there be beautiful women keeping you company at your dinner meeting tonight, Mr. Lawson? You tell me to be good, but what about you? Are you going to use ’talking business’ as an excuse to go carousing?"
Mason Lawson chuckled softly. "Starting to keep tabs on me already? How about I take you with me tonight?"
Eve Vaughn thought about herself, just an ordinary university student, attending that kind of event with Mason Lawson. It would inevitably lead to misunderstandings.
She said with a grin, "I was just kidding. I know Mr. Lawson is a man of integrity."
After finishing the call with Mason Lawson, Eve Vaughn’s heart felt warm and secure.
It’s just that she had never imagined she would one day be with a man of Mason Lawson’s age and status.
’I wonder if tonight’s dinner meeting will be like that time at The Aegis Club, with beautiful female celebrities throwing themselves at Mason Lawson.’
’If it happens a few more times, will he be able to refuse?’
As Eve Vaughn’s imagination was running wild, her phone rang again.
But this time, it was the designer, Lucy, calling her.
"Miss Vaughn, there are some people here claiming to be your uncle and aunt, telling us to stop the renovations." Lucy said, sounding very troubled. "They said... this house isn’t yours, and you can’t call the shots. So, they want us to stop work immediately."
Eve Vaughn hadn’t expected the couple to be so impatient.
She was furious. Even if she took them to court, it would take time.
At the very least, she didn’t want to let them move back into her home right now.
Therefore, she told Lucy, "Don’t pay any attention to them. This house was left to me by my father; it has nothing to do with them. Keep renovating as planned. If they cause any more trouble, just call security and have them thrown out!"
"Okay, Miss Vaughn. Since you’ve put it that way, I know what to do."
As Lucy was speaking, Eve Vaughn could hear the sounds of Jason Vaughn and Lana Chambers arguing and shouting on the other end of the line.
She couldn’t be bothered to listen, and besides, she wasn’t one to be easily intimidated.
There was no way she would just compromise and let that whole family move back in after a few threats from them.
...
「In a five-star hotel」
Mason Lawson sat at the head of the table, his expression grim despite the endless flattery from those around him.
This was because he hadn’t known that Joanna Sullivan would also be attending the dinner.
He’d heard she had already retired from her dance troupe, but since her fame lingered, she had started accepting endorsements and various commercial gigs.
As it turned out, the product Mason Lawson was discussing with the partner company required Joanna Sullivan as its spokesperson.
And given Mason Lawson’s status, he had long since stopped managing such minor details, which was why he had only just learned that she was the spokesperson.
At the banquet, Joanna Sullivan acted as if she didn’t know him, toasting him just like everyone else.
Mason Lawson’s gaze deepened slightly as he drank a glass with her, expressionless and clearly not wanting to say much.
"President Lawson, I look forward to your guidance in the future."
Joanna Sullivan gazed at him tenderly, her look full of meaning.
Mason Lawson gave a faint nod before turning to chat with the partner company’s boss, leaving Joanna Sullivan hanging.
Later, Joanna Sullivan drank a little too much and appeared tipsy.
But her seat was far from Mason Lawson’s, and with so many people around, she had no idea if he had even noticed her.
By the time the dinner ended, Joanna Sullivan seemed to find it difficult to even stand up.
But her drunkenness only enhanced her allure, giving her a captivating seductiveness that a young girl would not possess.
The partner company’s boss quickly went to support her, saying, "Miss Sullivan, let me take you home."
After all, anyone at the dinner could see that this man was interested in Joanna Sullivan.
If Joanna Sullivan fell into his hands tonight, it probably wouldn’t be as simple as just going home.
But Joanna Sullivan pushed the middle-aged man away and stumbled toward Mason Lawson. "President Lawson, can you take me home?"
