Apocalypse: My Items Can Upgrade Infinitely
Chapter 114 - 108: Unexpected News, Breakout, and Winning Hearts
Lin Feng frowned. ’Is the Zerg Race’s plan to attack from underground?’
But he had watched this outpost bunker being built. To prevent the Zerg Race from tunneling through, not only was the foundation deepened, but the ground was also paved with a layer of reinforced concrete nearly two meters thick.
The materials were all readily available from the cement factories of the two cities. Due to the rapid decline of the real estate market in recent years, there was a massive surplus of inventory with a short shelf life. It made more sense to use them here than to transport steel and grain back to the rear.
So, they used local materials...
And that was how the engineering marvel of the Wu City defense line was created.
A two-meter-thick surface defense layer would take a Red-Armored Beetle more than half a month to dig through. Even if a Tiger Spine Zerg took on the task itself, it would still need over ten days just to scrape out a hole.
Against a flat wall surface, the Giant Mandibles of the Black Spine Zergs and Tiger Spine Zergs, which couldn’t open to 180 degrees, were completely useless.
They were even less effective than professional diggers like the Red-Armored Beetles.
By the time the Zerg Race actually managed to breach the defensive fortress from underground, humanity’s strategic goal of halting the Zerg expansion would have long been achieved, and the forces would have already retreated.
Therefore, Lin Feng’s first reaction was that the Tiger Spine Zergs wanted to launch a pincer attack from the rear of the outpost, catching the defenders off guard.
So he pressed the button on his walkie-talkie and replied:
"Don’t worry. There’s no way they can break through from underground."
"Just keep an eye on the Tiger Spine Zergs’ movements. Focus on the sky and watch out for an attack from the Wind-winged Zergs."
With the protection of the outpost, ground attacks were manageable. The only thing that truly concerned Lin Feng was the incredibly fast Tier Two Wind-winged Zergs.
The defenders’ reaction times couldn’t keep up with their speed.
Moreover, as a Tier Two Zerg Race, the Wind-winged Zergs’ massive size meant a greater takeoff weight. They could easily drop other Zergs into the center of the outpost or carry them to the top of the walls, from where they could burrow down into the firing levels...
A sudden attack like that would definitely cause significant chaos among the defenders.
However, to Lin Feng’s surprise, after ten minutes of digging, the Tiger Spine Zergs suddenly stopped right when they reached the ground beneath the outpost.
At this moment, he didn’t even need the Tank’s Life Radar. His own Mind Sensing clearly showed five or six bright light sources clustered together more than seventy meters deep beneath his feet, right under the outpost.
And they just stayed there, motionless.
Huddled together as if they were plotting something.
A strange sense of crisis slowly welled up inside Lin Feng.
Inexplicable phenomena were often accompanied by the arrival of an unknown threat.
Soon, Lin Feng saw Li Ran’s figure rushing over from the other side of the outpost.
He stopped in front of Lin Feng and said excitedly:
"Brother Feng, good news!"
Lin Feng frowned slightly and told him to get to the point.
Li Ran took a deep breath and immediately explained:
"The brothers who were with Brother Qin before are in the main fortress on the front lines right now. They just sent me the latest news."
"Division command has ordered them to evacuate the southern main fortress as soon as possible and head north."
"Because not far from those main fortresses, a large number of Tier Two Tiger Spine Zergs have gathered. It’s a Zerg Race Nest, so it’s very likely where the Mother Empress is hiding!"
Lin Feng sensed something was wrong and asked in return:
"So, division command is planning to launch a Nuclear Bomb at those locations to kill the Zerg Race Mother Empress?"
Li Ran shook his head:
"I don’t think so. The blast radius of a Nuclear Bomb is too large. You can’t avoid it by just evacuating a few hundred meters."
"Besides, Nuclear Bombs aren’t ideal for hitting underground targets. It’s probably a special bunker-buster missile, equipped with some conventional weapons that are extremely lethal to biological targets."
"Like white phosphorus rounds, or a Cloud Burst Bomb..."
Hearing this, Lin Feng’s expression changed. A faint, ashen color appeared on his grim face.
But Li Ran, who hadn’t noticed anything wrong due to the dim light, continued speaking:
"Once division command’s decapitation strike succeeds, and the Zerg Race Mother Empress is seriously injured or killed, this controlled Swarm will fall into chaos. That’ll be the perfect time for us to leave the city and counterattack."
"This is our chance to turn the tables!"
"If we take this opportunity to kill a few more Tiger Spine Zergs and get more people to advance to Tier Two Awakener, then that Cheng Zhan won’t be anything special..."
Li Ran’s enthusiastic speech was cut short by a thoughtful Lin Feng:
"Run!"
"Notify everyone! Grab your Heavy Machine Guns, abandon the mission, and run back to the troop transport vehicle!"
"They have three minutes! In three minutes, I’m opening the rear gate! I’ll be the first one to break out!" Lin Feng said as he walked away, his tone urgent and his expression fierce.
Cut off mid-sentence, Li Ran stood there, stunned by the order:
"Wh... Why?!"
Lin Feng looked back and left him with one sentence:
"Those Tiger Spine Zergs that are about to be attacked are right under this outpost! Right beneath our feet!!"
With that, his figure disappeared into the corridor leading to the stairs below.
Li Ran was left standing there dumbfounded. After a few seconds, he finally snapped out of it and immediately started shouting orders to a few teammates and squad leaders, telling the new recruits to assemble at once!
Evacuate the outpost within two minutes!
"Run! Run!"
"The missiles are coming! We can’t stay here!!"
"One minute left! Everybody move!"
The soldiers were bewildered, but they still obeyed their squad leaders’ orders, because they noticed that the Sergeant Major, who had been holding the line with them, had already vanished.
Retreating along with him were several other powerful, veteran squad leaders at Tier One Late Stage. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮
After receiving the notification, Shen Jie and the others immediately grabbed their weapons, left their posts, and returned to the troop transport vehicle in the center of the outpost.
