Ashes of the star forge
Chapter 109: Preparations for Departure
Lian sat across from Elara in the quiet underground cave, the faint blue-green glow of the bioluminescent moss casting soft, ethereal light across the rough stone walls. The air was cool and damp, carrying the distant, rhythmic drip of water from deeper tunnels. They had spent several days here — recovering from their injuries, sorting through their massive haul of treasures, training relentlessly, and quietly planning their next moves. The broken world above them was still dangerous, with the planet split in two and the Eternal Veil Syndicate likely hunting for any loose ends or survivors connected to the fight.
Lian looked at Elara steadily, his blue void eyes calm but resolute.
“We will soon leave this place,” he said quietly. “I just want things to calm down on the surface first. The Syndicate will be searching for anyone connected to the auction and the fight. We stay hidden a little longer, then we use one of the spaceships we acquired and leave this planet behind. So get ready.”
Elara nodded slowly, her alloy fingers resting lightly on her knees. She had been expecting this. The underground cave had served them well as a temporary sanctuary — safe, hidden, and isolated from the chaos above. But they couldn’t hide forever. The galaxy was moving. News of the Kharvax Prime spatial rift would continue spreading. Opportunities and dangers would multiply rapidly in the coming years.
“I understand,” she replied, her voice steady. “We have more than enough resources now. Five functional spaceships, weapons, cultivation materials, credits... we can go anywhere we want.”
Lian allowed a small, cold smile to touch his lips.
“Exactly. We don’t need to stay on a half-destroyed planet. We’ll find a better place to train and prepare for the Kharvax Rift. Somewhere quieter, where we can grow stronger without constant interference from syndicates or bounty hunters.”
They spent the next few hours going through their inventory together. Elara helped organize the storage rings, separating immediate-use items from long-term resources. They had accumulated an impressive collection: high-grade pills and elixirs for healing and cultivation breakthroughs, various weapons including blasters and blades, defensive artifacts and talismans, rare herbs and Qi crystals, advanced gadgets and communication devices, and even sets of sturdy clothing and survival equipment taken from wealthy merchants. The Aetherforge Voidweave Suit and Elara’s white lightning blade were set aside for personal use. The Mindweaver Crown remained safely stored in one of Lian’s rings — a secret weapon he planned to use carefully when the time was right.
Lian also quietly checked the high-grade ring containing the slaves. He hadn’t decided what to do with them yet. Freeing them could create complications, but keeping them as they were felt wrong. He set that problem aside for later. Survival and growth came first.
As they prepared, Elara spoke softly.
“Where do you think we should go first?”
Lian thought for a moment, his expression focused.
“A larger trading hub. Somewhere we can sell some of the excess items for more credits and gather reliable information about the rift and the lost universe. Then we find a quiet, remote place to train intensively. Six years isn’t long when you’re trying to reach the next realm and survive what’s waiting inside that rift.”
Elara nodded in agreement. She knew the path ahead would be brutal, but she was ready to walk it with him.
They continued packing and organizing late into their “night” (though underground, time blurred together). Lian tested the black liquid inside him again, managing to form small blades and tools with slightly better consistency. Elara practiced with her new blade, slowly making progress despite the lightning shocks that still threw her back. They were both pushing their limits, determined to be ready for whatever came next.
When they finally rested, the cave felt less like a hiding spot and more like a forge — a place where two survivors were tempering themselves into something sharper, stronger, and far more dangerous than before.
The surface world above was still recovering from the catastrophe. But down here, in the quiet darkness, plans were being made. The path forward was clear.
They would leave soon.
And when they did, they would be ready for the galaxy that awaited them.
