Chapter 298: Extra activity

"Silence!"

The voice of the instructor rang in everyone’s ears, and the students immediately stopped talking and focused on the instructor.

This instructor was a middle-aged man with a tall build, and he wore a long purple robe. Alex recognised him as one of the instructors for first-year students, but he didn’t attend the other party’s class.

After getting the attention of the students, the instructor cleared his throat and started talking.

He first congratulated the students for making it this far in their studies and for how much they had grown since they started earlier this year. A lot of them had made noticeable improvements, and he encouraged them to keep working hard.

The instructor didn’t spend much time praising the students and quickly moved to the topic of today, their final assessment.

"As many of you must have already known, this assessment will be different from the previous two assessments because it’ll be your last assessment as first-year students.

After this, those who pass will successfully become second-year students, and the university will keep grooming them. As for those who fail, they’ll have to leave the university for good." The instructor said.

This statement immediately caused a wave of shocked gasps amongst the students.

Did that mean they would be expelled if they didn’t pass this assessment? Wasn’t that too much?!

The instructor waited a bit for the students to digest this piece of news before continuing.

"And the rewards for the top rankings of this assessment will also be different from the previous two assessments.

From the top 300 to the top 6 on the ranking, rewards will remain the same.

As for fifth to first place on the ranking, the days off will be replaced with cash rewards!" The instructor announced.

Not waiting to get the reaction of the students, he proceeded with the announcement.

"This assessment will include written assessments, practical assessments, and an extra activity. These are going to be used to assess you all, and the total mark for this assessment is 1000; anyone with a score lower than 800 automatically fails.

For the practical assessments, the instructors responsible for your classes will be responsible for handling that.

As for the extra activity, the university has already decided that.

You’ll have to form pairs and work together to kill a mutated rank magic beast."

At the mention of the mutated rank magic beast, Alex and Eric exchanged glances. Eric winked with a smile. His expression screaming "I told you, didn’t I? See, I was right!"

Alex only smiled slightly in response, silently returning his focus to the instructor in front of them. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

"That will be all for the assessment, you’re free to pick your partners for the extra activity, any more information will be passed out later by other instructors." After saying this, the instructor vanished from the hall.

He didn’t actually vanish but just moved at a very high speed that the other students couldn’t follow, he was an Archmage after all.

But Alex was able to see his movements clearly.

’He is probably using a magic item to enhance his speed,’ Alex thought as he watched the instructor leave the hall.

Now left alone, the hall quickly exploded into chaos as the students started making noise and rushing to pick their partners for facing the mutated rank beast assessment.

Some of the students were already at the Expert mage rank, and they were quickly surrounded by many other students who were asking them to team up with them.

When facing a mutated rank beast, having an Expert rank mage as your teammate would increase your chances of winning.

While this was going on, some other students were actually watching Alex. They wanted to team up with the student who had always taken first place in the last two assessments but held back.

Everyone knew that Alex and Eric always moved together so they would probably team up for this assessment.

Even then, they still waited to see if they would get a chance.

Alex had just gotten up when a strong female voice sounded from the side.

"Student Alex, I want us to team up for the assessment!"

Alex, Eric, along with the other students who wanted to team up with Alex turned to look at the owner of this voice.

Walking over confidently with her long brown hair falling freely behind her back, Roseline’s eyes were locked on Alex as she approached.

Alex "..."

He was left speechless, the girl was speaking as if she was commanding him to team up with her and not requesting it.

The other students who were watching also gave up immediately. Roseline was an Expert rank mage with the summoning element, and with Alex’s space element, they could easily take out a mutated rank beast together.

He would definitely agree to the request if he were smart, so there was no point in them waiting around any longer.

"Sorry, I already teamed up with someone else," Alex said calmly, which surprised everyone except Eric.

Roseline’s expression quickly returned to normal, she wasn’t planning to give up easily.

"Who’s your teammate? I’ll tell them to look for someone else to team up with," she said.

Alex smirked slightly and then turned to look at Eric.

"Want to team up?" He asked.

"Of course, let’s do our best!" Eric replied readily.

Roseline’s eyebrows twitched slightly when she saw that Alex had teamed up with Eric Osworth, that wasn’t someone she could mess with casually.

No, that wasn’t the point! They clearly just teamed up just now which meant that she asked first, Alex had rejected her and went to Eric instead!

"Are you sure about this? I have the summoning element, and I’m an Expert rank mage. I’m clearly helping you get free marks!" Roseline stated, slightly annoyed by Alex’s attitude.

"We can handle this, so try helping someone else. Excuse me, I have to go now." Alex said and immediately left without looking back, he intentionally increased his walking pace.

"Wait, I’m not done yet!" Roseline called out but Alex already left the hall.

The hall fell into a brief silence as everyone looked at her.

"What?!" She asked coldly, her gaze landing on a nearby student.

The student was spooked and hastily looked away while screaming "Nothing!"

"Tks!" Roseline clicked her tongue in dissatisfaction and also left the hall.

....

"What’s her problem?" Alex mumbled to himself as he walked through the hallway. He was curious as to why Roseline didn’t want to leave him alone, but not too curious to actually want to find out.

He threw the matter to the back of his mind as he entered the lecture hall for the General Magic knowledge class. The assessment timetable was already out, and the first was the theory assessment.

Instructor Dave, the instructor for General Magic knowledge, was already in the class. He nodded at Alex after the latter walked into the class and went to take his seat.

Eric entered not long after and soon, more students arrived. The hall was soon packed and the assessment finally started as instructor Dave made several papers to float towards the students.

One landed in front of Alex and he quickly ran his eyes through the questions. He was slightly surprised that the questions included topics that they had treated months ago, one would have thought that it would only be from classes taught within the last three months.

Well, not like it was going to be a problem for Alex. He took out his pen and started writing down the answers to each question.

For the following minutes, sounds of pen brushing over papers filled the hall while instructor Dave monitored them carefully.
