He pulled out the marriage contract from one of the trunks. On it, brazenly written, was the name "Chen Wanyue."

Her son was so enraged he spat a mouthful of blood and fainted on the spot.

Mrs. Li was scared witless. She didn’t dare feign unconsciousness any longer. Scrambling to her feet, she shook her son and ordered Qiaoxin to fetch a doctor.

The doctor arrived quickly. After administering acupuncture and a dose of medicinal decoction, her son revived.

However, after waking, her son seemed to be in a stupor.

He wouldn’t speak, simply lying stiffly in bed, staring at the canopy with tears streaming from his wide-open eyes.

The crowd fell silent. You could have heard a pin drop.

Forget the townspeople; even the constables from the county government tensed up, their faces grim as if facing a formidable enemy.

After a moment, the county government constables were the first to react. They bowed in unison. "Greetings, my lord."

Only then did everyone else snap out of it, calling out in unison, "Greetings, Lord County Magistrate."
