Captain Xavier, Your Wife Has Signed the Divorce Papers
Chapter 104: Days Are Numbered
"That’s enough." Kaden’s gaze darkened, his voice tinged with a chilling cold. "Nathaniel Quinn, get her out of here!"
As he spoke, he shot a glacial look at Miracle Doctor Wallace, his expression grim. "If anything happens to my grandmother, I’ll make you pay with your life."
Meeting Kaden’s bloodthirsty, dangerous gaze, Miracle Doctor Wallace was so terrified he could barely speak.
"I... I..."
Nathaniel Quinn was also wracked with guilt. "Cole..."
Kaden rubbed his throbbing temples. "Get her out."
Seraphina Sutton looked at him, her eyes red. "Kaden, I honestly just wanted to help. I didn’t know Miracle Doctor Wallace was a fraud..."
She wanted to say more, but seeing the cold, impatient look on Kaden’s face, she kept her mouth shut.
She had no choice but to leave with Nathaniel Quinn. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
Helen Sawyer and Lana Xavier didn’t dare to speak either.
The tension in the air was suffocating.
No one had expected things to turn out this way, and now, they were all overcome with regret.
...
Before long, Wren Wynter emerged from the operating room. Her scrubs were stained with blood, and her mask was pulled down to her chin, revealing a face that was exhausted but still beautiful.
"Wren, how is Grandma...?"
Wren’s voice was flat and calm, her expression grim. "The intracranial bleeding has stopped, but the brain damage is more severe than before."
Kaden’s heart sank. "What do you mean?"
"It means that because of the trauma from those thick needles, your grandmother’s brain tissue has suffered irreversible damage." Wren looked up at him, her voice stretched as taut as a string, ready to snap.
"According to my original treatment plan, she would have had at least another year. Now... I’m afraid she doesn’t have much time left."
She seemed to force out those last few words from her throat.
She wanted to lash out, but she didn’t know at whom.
That was Kaden’s own grandmother. He couldn’t be feeling any better than she was.
Even so, she couldn’t bring herself to forgive Kaden’s ignorance.
She truly didn’t understand why he would rather trust Seraphina Sutton and her friends than her, his doctor.
He was obviously a man of superior intelligence, but whenever Seraphina was involved, it was as if...
"Doesn’t have much time... how long is that?" Kaden’s voice was hoarse and tight.
"It could be a few months, or it could be a few weeks." Wren fought back the sting in her eyes and answered honestly. "It depends on her body’s ability to recover and the subsequent treatment, but you need to be prepared."
A few months...
A few weeks...
"This is all my fault." Kaden covered his face with his hands.
"You should spend as much time with your grandmother as you can now." Wren’s voice was soft, but her words were heavy, laden with unspoken meaning.
"Even though she’s in a coma, studies show that patients can still hear. You should talk to her more. Let her feel her family’s presence in her final days."
She paused, then added, "I’ll continue to give her acupuncture to alleviate her pain as much as possible."
Kaden looked up, his eyes bloodshot. "Wren, I should have trusted you."
Wren looked at him, silent for a few seconds. "Kaden Xavier, at this point, there’s nothing left for us to say."
She turned to leave, but Kaden called out to her. "Wren, I..."
"Is there something else?" Wren asked without turning around.
Kaden opened his mouth, but ultimately, no words came out.
Wren left the room, leaving Kaden standing alone in the empty space.
After leaving Old Madam Xavier’s room, Wren didn’t go straight home. She composed herself and went to a ward on another floor, where her aunt was recuperating.
Grace Wynter’s surgery had been a success, and she had been recovering well over the past few days. She was already able to sit up and talk.
Finn Wynter had hired the best private nurse to provide around-the-clock care, and he also made as much time as he could to visit her at the hospital.
"Auntie." Wren pushed the door open, the first genuine smile in days appearing on her face.
Grace Wynter was leaning against the headboard, reading a magazine. When she heard Wren’s voice, she looked up, her eyes immediately filling with a loving warmth. "Wren, you’re here. Why so late today? Was work busy?"
"Yeah, we had an emergency case." Wren sat by the bed and took her aunt’s hand. "Auntie, how are you feeling today?"
"Much better." Grace Wynter’s voice was laced with concern. "It just pains me to see you look so tired. You work so hard, yet you still come to see me every day... Don’t wear yourself out."
"I’m fine." Wren shook her head. "Don’t worry about me, Auntie."
Grace Wynter sighed. "Oh, Wren, I know these past few years haven’t been easy for you. That Kaden Xavier... Never mind, let’s not talk about him. In the future, you must find someone who truly cherishes you and build a happy life. A daughter of the Wynter Family will have no trouble finding a wonderful husband."
Wren just smiled and didn’t reply.
Outside the hospital room.
Seraphina Sutton and Nathaniel Quinn watched as Wren entered Grace Wynter’s room.
Nathaniel carefully supported her.
Seraphina’s eyes instantly began to redden.
She lowered her head, and a perfectly timed tear rolled down her cheek. "Nathaniel, look... Wren still has family, but what about me? I couldn’t even protect my own child. If our baby were still alive, they’d be kicking me by now..."
Nathaniel immediately pulled her into a sympathetic embrace, then glared viciously toward Grace Wynter’s room. "Don’t worry. I’ll make them pay for this!"
Wren, unaware of what was happening outside, didn’t leave until it was completely dark and her aunt was ready to rest for the night.
The elevator arrived on her floor and the doors slid open. Just as Wren was about to step inside, a man in black clothing rushed out and crashed right into her.
The man seemed to be in a great hurry, scrambling away in a panic after the collision.
He wore a black mask and a baseball cap with the brim pulled down low, obscuring his face.
Back at View Gardens, Wren felt a lingering sense of unease.
Just then, her phone rang, the sound jarring in the silent living room.
It was a call from the hospital.
Wren answered. "Hello?"
"Dr. Wynter, something’s wrong!" The frantic voice of the on-duty nurse came through the phone. "Your aunt, Ms. Grace Wynter, suddenly went into cardiac arrest! She’s being resuscitated now, you need to get here right away!"
Wren shot to her feet. "What? I’m on my way!"
She grabbed her coat and bolted out the door, not even taking the time to change out of her slippers.
The glaring red light above the resuscitation room door felt like a knife twisting in Wren’s heart.
Finn Wynter was standing by the door, his face ashen. His hands were clenched so tightly into fists that his knuckles had turned white.
His eyes were bloodshot, and he was shrouded in a terrifyingly grim aura.
"Finn!" Wren ran over to him. "How is Auntie?"
Seeing her, Finn Wynter struggled to keep his composure. "Dr. Shaw is in there with her. It’s been half an hour already."
"Finn, don’t worry. With Dr. Shaw here, Auntie is going to be okay," Wren said, trying to soothe him. "How could she suddenly go into cardiac arrest? She was perfectly fine this afternoon..."
"I’ve already had my men pull the security footage," Finn Wynter said, his voice as cold as ice. "Anyone who went in or out of Auntie’s room between this afternoon and tonight... I won’t let a single one of them off the hook."
Wren forced herself to remain calm.
’It’s happening all over again.’
’Every time she thought things were finally settling down, some new disaster would strike.’
’Her aunt was the only family she had left in this world, besides her cousin. If something happened to her... ’
Wren didn’t dare to finish the thought.
