Captain Xavier, Your Wife Has Signed the Divorce Papers
Chapter 163: A Successful Divorce
As soon as Wren Wynter got home, she immediately contacted Lily Archer.
"Ms. Archer, what do I need to prepare to apply for Doctors Without Borders?"
"Are you sure about this?" Lily Archer asked.
"Yes." Wren Wynter nodded emphatically.
"With you joining us, the team will surely be able to save more people." Lily Archer welcomed her sincerely. "I’ll send you the application form in a bit. Then, email me your resume and professional qualification certificates. If you want to go sooner, I can put you on the fast track."
Normally, after passing the initial screening, applicants would need to go through an interview and a professional assessment, followed by training upon acceptance.
But given Wren Wynter’s status and medical achievements, Lily Archer could waive those tedious steps and proceed to the final stage.
"Let’s fast-track it," Wren Wynter said.
Her grandmother’s killer had been found, and everything was settled. She had no more lingering concerns.
As for Kaden Xavier, they would be getting their divorce papers in two days.
"Okay."
After their conversation, Lily Archer sent her a form that detailed the requirements for Doctors Without Borders.
Must be fluent in English or French, at least to a B2 level.
First mission: Typically 9-12 months. Can be shortened to 6 months for certain specialties (e.g., pediatrics, emergency medicine).
Without much hesitation, Wren Wynter began to fill it out diligently.
Once finished, she sent it to Lily Archer’s email.
Lily Archer replied with an "OK" and asked how long she could stay.
Wren Wynter thought for a moment, then replied: 5 years.
Closing her laptop, she felt an unprecedented sense of peace.
Then, she opened her group chat with her two best friends and contacted Joy Lynch and Crystal Nash.
Before she left, she wanted to get together with them one more time. After all, she didn’t know when they would see each other again.
"Hey guys, are you free tomorrow?"
Joy Lynch was the first to answer, "I’m a little busy lately, I can’t get away."
Crystal Nash: "What’s up?"
"I signed up for Doctors Without Borders."
Joy Lynch was surprised. "Huh? When did this happen?"
Crystal Nash: "Because of Kaden Xavier?"
"Just now," Wren Wynter replied. "It’s not entirely because of him."
Crystal Nash mused, "Then I’ll figure out a way to get out tomorrow."
"No, no, it’s not like I’m never coming back." Wren Wynter quickly stopped her.
The price for Crystal Nash to get out was too high. It wasn’t necessary.
The three of them started a group video call and chatted for several hours, covering everything from life to men to trivial matters.
Afterward, none of them knew who hung up first, or even how they fell asleep.
「The next day.」
Wren Wynter changed her clothes and went to the hospital.
Before leaving, she planned to say a final goodbye to Kaden Xavier.
Seeing Wren Wynter, Kaden Xavier was a bit stunned. "Wren, what are you doing here?"
"Don’t get the wrong idea. I’m just here as a friend to visit the person who saved my life." Wren Wynter explained coolly. "I’ll take care of you for the two days you’re hospitalized. Consider it me repaying your favor."
"You don’t have to do this." Kaden Xavier lowered his gaze, his face unreadable, but his heart grew cold.
Normally, he would have been thrilled, but the purpose of Wren’s visit was clearly to draw a line between them, to cut ties and never see him again.
"It’s fine. We’re going to finalize the divorce in two days anyway." Seeing Kaden Xavier’s silence, she subconsciously furrowed her brow. "You’re not going to back out again, are you?"
"Wren, is there really no chance for us?" Kaden Xavier asked again, unwilling to give up. His voice was like a taut string, ready to snap at any moment.
Wren Wynter gazed at his handsome face, so close to her own, and realized her heart no longer felt a single ripple.
The long silence was agonizing, like being roasted over a fire for Kaden Xavier.
After a moment, Wren Wynter replied candidly, "Yes, there’s no chance."
’So, the love from my youth really can just fade away.’
The saying ’a beautiful beginning, a sorrowful end’ was truly fitting.
"Can you give me one more chance? This time, let it be my turn to love you, to pursue you..." For the first time, the ever-proud Kaden Xavier lowered his head for love.
With a sense of release, Wren Wynter cut him off. "Kaden Xavier, I’ve already let go. You didn’t do anything wrong, really. You just didn’t love me."
’There’s no marriage law that says if you love someone, they have to love you back.’
’Before, I was the one who was overthinking it.’
"I do love..."
Wren Wynter’s brow smoothed. "It doesn’t matter anymore. From now on, I want to be myself. Not Mrs. Xavier, just Wren Wynter."
"Wren, even if we get back together, I won’t stand in your way no matter what you do. Whatever you want, I can give it to you..."
"Kaden Xavier, we were married for three years, and you don’t even know what I want. So how could you possibly give it to me?"
The more she spoke, the paler and more silent Kaden Xavier became, and it felt as if a great hole had been torn open in his chest.
Because what Wren Wynter said was the truth.
He was the one who had personally thrown away the person who loved him.
"I’ll take care of you until the day we get the papers." With that, Wren Wynter stood up to wash some fruit for him.
Just as she had said, Wren Wynter was diligent and responsible in her care for Kaden Xavier during his hospital stay.
The two of them never spoke of the past or the future, as if they had returned to the first year of their marriage.
The peaceful days were almost terrifying.
But Kaden Xavier cherished it immensely.
He cherished every single minute and second he spent with Wren Wynter.
On the day of his discharge, Wren Wynter went with Kaden Xavier to the Civil Affairs Bureau to finalize the divorce proceedings.
Looking at the divorce certificate in her hand, Wren Wynter’s eyes curved into a smile.
’What a beautiful day!’
Kaden Xavier suppressed the pain in his heart. Seeing Wren’s relieved expression, he pressed his thin lips together. "What are your plans now?"
"To heal the sick and save lives."
"That’s good."
They both fell into a brief silence.
Until the taxi Wren had called arrived. "Kaden Xavier, goodbye."
’Goodbye forever.’
"Goodbye!"
’See you next time.’
Watching Wren Wynter’s retreating figure, Kaden Xavier suddenly clutched his chest and coughed up a mouthful of blood.
’Keeping Wren Wynter would have been easy. All he had to do was drag out the divorce, and then...’
’But he didn’t want Wren Wynter to hate him.’
’He also wanted them to have a chance to start over.’
...
As soon as she got home, Wren Wynter quickly packed her things.
Yesterday, she had received a text from Lily Archer.
It told her to go to Aferia for training first, after which she would be deployed.
Even though the schedule was tight, she thought it was perfect.
「The next day.」
Wren Wynter arrived at the airport, dragging her luggage behind her. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
Looking at this place where she had worked for several years, Wren Wynter felt an indescribable emotion in her heart.
"Wren!"
Suddenly, a voice called out.
Joy Lynch came running over, her voice choked with tears. She threw her arms around Wren, burying her head in her shoulder. "Can’t you just not go?"
"I want to save more people, and I want a change of scenery," Wren Wynter said.
"I know, but I don’t want you to go somewhere so far away and dangerous! You can do the same thing in a hospital here. Why do you have to go to Aferia? There’s a war going on there!"
Knowing Joy couldn’t bear for her to leave, Wren Wynter gently patted her back and coaxed her in a soft voice, "I want to improve myself. Don’t worry, I’ll protect myself."
As she spoke, she pulled Joy away, wiped the tears from her face, and gave a faint smile. "Don’t cry. It’s not like I’m never coming back. In five years, we can still drink and chat just like old times. And we can video call whenever!"
"Five years! That’s so long! No, that’s all the more reason I can’t let you go." Joy simply clung to Wren Wynter’s arm.
