Captain Xavier, Your Wife Has Signed the Divorce Papers
Chapter 44: It Would Be Pretentious to Refuse Again
"Much better, much better. It was all thanks to you that day. Otherwise, this old man would have really been in danger."
Maximus Yates beamed at Wren Wynter, genuinely grateful.
Kaden Xavier looked at Wren Wynter in confusion, completely unaware of what had happened.
"It was just what I had to do." Wren Wynter gave a polite, faint smile.
Old Madam Xavier was also quite surprised, but since Wren Wynter had always been a flight doctor for an airline under the Xavier Group, it was normal for her to know some first aid techniques.
"Alright, all of you can head out now. Maximus and I haven’t seen each other in years, and we plan to catch up properly."
Old Madam Xavier shooed everyone out, and seeing this, they all tactfully withdrew from the hospital room.
"Miss Wynter, we owe you a great debt for what happened with my father. Ever since you saved him, we’ve been looking for you to thank you properly. I never expected to run into you here today."
The middle-aged man took out a business card and handed it to Wren Wynter, who accepted it.
The card read: Isaac Yates, President of Horizon Group.
Horizon Group.
Kaden Xavier, standing to the side, froze when he saw the name on the card.
Wren Wynter might not have understood the significance, but he did.
Horizon Group was a renowned medical corporation in The Capital, owning numerous hospitals. Ninety percent of all hospitals in The Capital belonged to Horizon Group.
He never would have guessed that this plain-looking middle-aged man was the one at the helm of Horizon Group.
Then, the man pulled a check from the inner pocket of his suit and presented it to Wren Wynter.
"Miss Wynter, I’ve had this check ready for a long time. It may not be much, but it’s a token of our Yates Family’s gratitude."
Wren Wynter glanced at the number on the check.
Ten million.
Ten million was enough to support an ordinary family for a lifetime, but in the eyes of the Yates Family and the Xavier Family, it was merely pocket change.
"Mr. Yates, saving lives and treating the sick is a doctor’s duty. I can’t accept this money."
Wren Wynter refused.
In her eyes, saving Maximus Yates was a simple effort, and more importantly, her duty as a doctor.
Who he was wouldn’t have changed the choice she made.
Isaac Yates hadn’t expected Wren Wynter to refuse.
’Does she think ten million is too little?’
"Miss Wynter, I know that ten million might not be much to the Xavier Family, but this is..."
"This isn’t about money, Mr. Yates. I didn’t save Elder Yates for a reward. I would have done the same for anyone else."
Wren Wynter replied with quiet dignity, her gaze firm, completely unmoved by the money.
Isaac Yates was taken aback, and Kaden Xavier, beside him, fell even more silent.
He realized he didn’t seem to know Wren Wynter at all, and he certainly never imagined she would refuse.
"Well said!"
Maximus Yates came out of the hospital room, his face unable to hide his admiration for Wren Wynter.
"Young lady, I knew I was right about you. So dignified and composed—you remind me a bit of myself when I was young."
"Dad."
Maximus Yates nodded slightly, his weathered face featuring a pair of shrewd eyes.
He jutted his chin toward Isaac Yates, who, after a moment’s hesitation, understood and took out his phone.
"Young lady, let’s exchange contact information. If you ever need anything in the future, don’t hesitate to call me."
Wren Wynter smiled faintly and tactfully exchanged contact information with him.
’Refusing again would just seem pretentious.’
To the side, Seraphina Sutton stared at Wren Wynter with jealousy, her nails digging so deeply into her palms it felt as if they would break.
’Why does Wren Wynter get to win the Yates Family’s favor? What makes her so much better than me?!’
Seeing that they had exchanged numbers, Maximus Yates didn’t linger.
"Let’s go."
"Kaden, Wren, see our guests out for me," Old Madam Xavier’s voice called from inside the room.
Wren Wynter and Kaden Xavier answered in unison.
Seraphina Sutton wanted to go with them, but Old Madam Xavier stopped her from inside the room.
"Miss Sutton, would you mind getting me a glass of water? It’s a bit inconvenient for me right now."
Seraphina Sutton gritted her teeth, turned, and walked into the room. "Of course."
Wren Wynter and Kaden Xavier walked Maximus Yates and his son out of the hospital.
Maximus Yates clapped Kaden Xavier on the shoulder and said emotionally, "You Xavier boy, you’ve really married a good wife. You’d better treasure her."
Kaden Xavier glanced sideways at Wren Wynter standing next to him, the corners of his lips turning up.
"Yes, I will."
Wren Wynter scoffed internally, a subtle, sarcastic smile touching her lips.
Maximus Yates took two tickets from his pocket and handed them to Wren Wynter, saying warmly, "Young lady, there’s an international medical conference in a couple of days. I was wondering if you might be interested?"
Wren Wynter took the tickets and was surprised when she looked closely.
Wren Wynter had heard of this medical conference. Rumor had it that many titans of the medical world would be attending.
It was held once every five years for them to exchange experiences, and tickets were always incredibly hard to come by.
In truth, there were many such conferences each year. The reason this one was so sought after was that many top experts came to share their knowledge, and some might even be inspired to take on a talented junior as a disciple.
Everyone just wanted to use this opportunity to catch their eye.
"This old man doesn’t understand these things anymore. It’s better to leave it to you young people," Maximus Yates said with a hearty laugh.
"Thank you!" Wren Wynter carefully put the tickets away, extremely grateful for Maximus Yates’s gift.
Only after Maximus Yates and his son had left did Wren Wynter take out the tickets to examine them again.
Suddenly, Kaden Xavier grabbed Wren Wynter’s wrist, his face cold, and started pulling her back the way they came.
Wren Wynter frowned, struggling to break free from his grip.
But Kaden Xavier’s hold was tight, and her wrist was already turning red.
"Kaden Xavier, let go!"
Exhaustion began to creep over Wren Wynter. She still hadn’t recovered from the aftereffects of yesterday’s surgery and didn’t want to argue with Kaden Xavier.
"Wren Wynter, just how many other things are you hiding from me?"
Kaden Xavier was discovering that he knew practically nothing about Wren Wynter.
Like the incident with Maximus Yates. She clearly could have explained it at the time, but she didn’t.
She hid it from him, silently accepting the punishment he had given her.
"We’re about to get a divorce. Does any of this matter?" 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
"It does matter! I don’t agree to the divorce!"
Kaden Xavier’s eyes were bloodshot as he tightened his grip.
Wren Wynter sucked in a sharp breath of pain, her brow furrowing deeply.
"Are you going back on your word? Don’t forget we had an agreement!"
"So what? Even if I agree, Grandmother won’t."
"You don’t have to worry about that. I’ll figure something out."
Wren Wynter turned her head away. As long as Kaden Xavier signed, she would find a way to get his grandmother to agree to their divorce.
Rage surged through Kaden Xavier. He felt he hadn’t treated Wren Wynter unfairly in their three years of marriage, so why did she have to push things to the point of divorce?
Just as the two were locked in a stalemate, Seraphina Sutton ran out of the hospital room, her eyes red and clearly having cried.
When she saw Wren Wynter and Kaden Xavier, she bit her lower lip, her voice choked with sobs.
"Dr. Wynter, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know I was causing you so much trouble. Don’t worry, I won’t bother you and Kaden anymore."
With that, she covered her mouth and rushed past them.
"Seraphina!" Kaden Xavier was completely bewildered. He was about to chase after her when Old Madam Xavier’s voice boomed from the room.
"If you dare chase after her, then don’t ever come back to the Xavier Family!"
