Captain Xavier, Your Wife Has Signed the Divorce Papers
Chapter 74: Why Kaden Xavier Never Told Her
"Sigh." Maximus Yates let out a heavy sigh.
"Old Yates, is the boy still holding a grudge against you?" Old Madam Xavier asked, her eyes fixed on a painting on the wall.
Maximus Yates fell silent, slowly turning around with Isaac Yates’s support.
Wren Wynter also hurried forward to support Old Madam Xavier, her expression remaining placid.
’She had never been particularly interested in other people’s family affairs.’
"Yes. When his mother passed away, he ran away from home in a fit of anger. He went up to the mountains to study under a master, and now he refuses to come home because of some woman."
At this, Maximus Yates’s brow furrowed. He clearly had a poor impression of the woman influencing his grandson.
Old Madam Xavier patted Maximus Yates’s shoulder and said softly, "The children are grown now. They have their own ideas, and we can’t force them. Look at Kaden, for instance. He insisted on being a captain at an airline, and there was nothing I could do about it."
"If that little rascal were half as outstanding as Kaden, I wouldn’t have a word to say."
Kaden Xavier was considered the most exceptional among the younger generation.
What he envied most was that Kaden had married a good wife.
If his own grandson could bring home a wife as wonderful as Wren Wynter, he wouldn’t interfere with whatever he did.
Suddenly, Wren Wynter’s phone rang.
"Excuse me, Elder Yates, Mr. Yates, Grandma. I need to step out and take a call," Wren Wynter said, looking apologetic.
"Go ahead," they all nodded.
Wren Wynter walked out of the villa and pressed the answer button.
"Miss Wynter, it’s me, Hugh Hale."
Wren Wynter’s expression faltered for a moment. "Is something wrong?"
"Are you free tomorrow? I can arrange for you and Kaden to go finalize the divorce proceedings."
Hearing that she could finally get divorced, Wren Wynter’s eyes instantly lit up. "I am," she replied hurriedly.
"I’ll let you know the specific time later."
"Okay, thank you."
After hanging up, the weight on Wren Wynter’s heart finally lifted.
「Half an hour later.」
Maximus Yates and Isaac Yates saw Old Madam Xavier and Wren Wynter out.
Maximus Yates’s face was full of reluctance. "In a few days, I’ll bring my grandson to visit you."
"There’s no rush," Old Madam Xavier said with a smile.
She offered a few more words of comfort to Maximus Yates, telling him not to push the younger generation too hard.
After they left the Yates Family estate, Wren Wynter asked Old Madam Xavier to give her a ride to the Nash Family’s place.
Old Madam Xavier took a set of keys from her handbag and placed them in Wren Wynter’s palm.
"These are the keys to View Gardens. Kaden bought it a while ago, intending to surprise you on your birthday, but then... so much happened. I got these keys from him. You can live there without any worries."
Wren Wynter was stunned for a long moment. Finally, her voice choked with emotion, she said, "Grandma, thank you."
"The Xavier Family owes you this. Alright, let’s not talk about it anymore. Go on home and get some rest." Old Madam Xavier’s eyes reddened as well.
"Okay," Wren Wynter nodded.
Old Madam Xavier had the driver change course to View Gardens. She only returned to the old Xavier Family residence after dropping Wren Wynter off.
Wren Wynter looked up at the familiar yet strange villa, a sharp sting in her nose.
’It’s been five years.’
’It’s been five years since Mom and Dad passed away.’
’After the accident, this villa was mortgaged. To think that after all this time, she was back.’
"Miss..."
A trembling voice called out from the villa’s courtyard.
Wren Wynter looked toward the sound and saw a familiar face.
Butler Chandler, unable to hide his excitement, opened the villa’s main gate and hurried over to Wren Wynter.
"Miss, is it really you?"
"Uncle Chandler, it’s been a long time."
Butler Chandler had worked for the Wynter Family for thirty years. He had been with her parents since they started from scratch and had watched her grow up.
After the villa was mortgaged, she hadn’t seen him again.
’She never expected him to still be here.’
’Did Kaden Xavier arrange this?’
"Miss, have you been well all these years?"
Wren Wynter gave a slight nod, but then, after a moment’s thought, she shook her head.
’These past few years... they weren’t good, but they weren’t exactly bad either.’
Butler Chandler wiped the tears from the corners of his eyes.
The two of them walked into the villa together.
Butler Chandler got Wren Wynter a glass of water and recounted what he had been up to over the years.
"After the Master and Madam had their accident, the villa was mortgaged, and I went back to my hometown for a while. Not long ago, Mr. Xavier found me. He said he had bought View Gardens and hoped I would come back to manage it."
"Was it Kaden Xavier?" Wren Wynter asked.
Butler Chandler: "Yes. Actually, Mr. Xavier has been sending me money all these years. Miss, the young master is a truly good man."
Hearing this, Wren Wynter’s feelings were incredibly complex. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
’She didn’t understand why Kaden Xavier would do all this. Was it to compensate her?’
’But that doesn’t make sense!’
’Back then, they were still quite affectionate with each other; there was no talk of compensation.’
’But why had Kaden Xavier never mentioned any of this to her?’
"If the Master and Madam knew you were doing well, Miss, they would be happy in the great beyond."
Wren Wynter smiled but said nothing.
’Aside from Kaden Xavier not loving her, her life with the Xavier Family had indeed been quite good.’
Knowing Wren Wynter hadn’t eaten yet, Butler Chandler prepared a table full of her favorite dishes.
Wren Wynter simply lowered her head and dug into her food.
「Meanwhile, at the Xavier Group.」
Just as Kaden Xavier returned to the company, he saw Hugh Hale sitting in his office, looking like he had been waiting for quite some time.
"What are you doing here? Something up?"
Hugh Hale stood up. "Yes. It’s about your divorce from Wren Wynter."
Kaden Xavier’s expression turned grim. He frowned and said, "Hugh, I remember telling you before that I will not agree to a divorce."
"If you don’t agree, why did you put your thumbprint on the papers and mail them to Wren Wynter?" Hugh Hale took out the divorce agreement, which bore a thumbprint, and placed it on the desk.
"What do you mean?" Kaden Xavier froze for a second.
Hugh Hale gestured for Kaden Xavier to look.
Kaden Xavier picked up the divorce agreement from the desk and saw a bright red thumbprint pressed firmly in the space for his signature.
’How is this possible?’
’He had no memory of this at all.’
"I didn’t do it."
"I figured you’d say that, so I made a special trip to the notary office to have the print analyzed. The results show that the thumbprint is, in fact, yours." Hugh Hale adjusted the gold-rimmed glasses on his nose.
"Hugh, do you really think I have any reason to lie to you?" Kaden Xavier took a deep breath.
"I have more proof."
Hugh Hale took out his phone and opened their chat history.
On the screen was the text message Kaden Xavier had supposedly sent him that day.
Kaden Xavier snatched the phone, his eyes glued to the screen in utter disbelief.
’He would never have made a decision like this while he was in his right mind. And he certainly never sent Hugh Hale any text messages.’
’What in the world is going on?’
