Chapter 478: Chapter 478: Can’t Sleep

"Girls, I have to recommend a miraculous sanitary napkin—the Ding’s Sanitary Napkin that Youyou recommended recently.

I used to have extremely painful cramps. For the first two days of my period, I had to rely on painkillers just to get by. The odor was also pretty bad, which made me really self-conscious.

I bought a pack of Ding’s Sanitary Napkins yesterday, just to see what would happen. And when I woke up this morning... absolutely NO! MORE! CRAMPS! [Sobbing]

Seriously, not a single bit of pain!

And there’s no odor at all, only a faint herbal scent. It’s soft and breathable, so comfortable you can’t even feel it’s there.

I swear I’m not a shill. They’re just that good.

For all my girls out there who suffer from cramps and odor, you have to give these a try. You won’t be disappointed!

Ding’s Pharmaceutical, you have my undying respect. [Worshipping]

Shen Qian’s post attracted a ton of attention after she published it.

Her heartfelt post and personal experience resonated with many women who also suffered from painful cramps and odor.

"For real? It relieves cramps? I’ve had cramps for over ten years, and no sanitary napkin has ever been able to do that."

"To the poster above, I bought Ding’s Sanitary Napkins yesterday too. This morning, my stomach really does hurt less, and it’s true, there’s no odor."

"I bought them too. At first, I was skeptical about a pharmaceutical company making sanitary napkins, but after using them, I’m a total convert. They’re so much better than the big-name brands."

"I’m a fan of Ji Youyou, so I bought them after her recommendation. They really didn’t disappoint! I’m strongly recommending them to all the girls out there."

Suddenly, the internet was flooded with positive reviews for Ding’s Sanitary Napkins. Consumers who had tried the product rushed to share their experiences, collectively attesting to the product’s superior quality.

The reputation of Ding’s Sanitary Napkins was established almost overnight, spreading like wildfire.

Within just a few days, sales grew stronger each day, and the sanitary napkins quickly carved out a niche in the market.

Ding Kaifang watched the sales figures climb every day, a constant smile on his face.

One day, he once again reported the latest sales figures to Li Xu.

"Doctor Li, you’re incredible! Our sanitary napkins are selling like crazy. Major department stores are all hounding us for more stock, and tons of distributors are proactively contacting us, asking to partner up."

Ding Kaifang said excitedly over the phone, "If this trend continues, I bet we’ll be outselling the established brands in no time."

Li Xu was happy to hear it.

"President Ding, the market for women’s products is vast, and consumer demand for safe and healthy products is huge."

"As long as we maintain our quality and continue to innovate, things will only get better."

Ding Kaifang completely agreed. "Exactly. Quality and safety are paramount."

After hanging up, Li Xu got back to work.

A patient came in for a consultation.

The patient, a man in his forties, looked to be in extremely poor spirits. He had dark circles under his eyes, which were heavily bloodshot, as if he hadn’t slept in days. He was seeking treatment for chronic insomnia.

Deng Haiyang looked utterly exhausted as he sat down, appearing completely listless.

His voice was heavy with fatigue.

He described his symptoms to Li Xu. "Dr. Li, for some time now, I just can’t fall asleep at night. Sometimes I stay awake the entire night. In the evenings, I become anxious and irritable. I get terrible dizzy spells, my memory has gotten much worse, and my thinking feels sluggish. During the day, I’m completely drained of energy and have no motivation to do anything. I also have indigestion and a poor appetite."

He had previously seen a Western doctor and was diagnosed with "neurasthenia."

However, he felt unwell from the side effects of the Western medicine, and the results weren’t satisfactory, so he decided to try traditional Chinese medicine instead.

’After listening to Deng Haiyang’s description, Li Xu already had a preliminary diagnosis in mind.’

’In traditional Chinese medicine, this was a classic case of an "insomnia ailment."’

"Mr. Deng, in traditional Chinese medicine, we call this condition ’the ailment of sleeplessness,’" Li Xu explained.

"The core pathology of sleeplessness is what we call a ’disharmony between the heart and kidneys.’

You see, TCM considers the heart to be the ultimate yang organ. It governs fire and houses the *shen*, or the spirit.

The kidneys, on the other hand, are the ultimate yin organ. They govern water and store our vital essence.

Normally, the water of the kidneys must ascend to nourish the yin of the heart. This prevents the heart’s fire from becoming excessive.

At the same time, the heart’s fire must descend to warm the yang of the kidneys. This maintains a delicate balance, a state of harmony between water and fire.

It’s just like in nature, where yin rises and yang descends, with each element restraining and nourishing the other.

But if the true yin of the kidneys is deficient, it can’t ascend to temper the heart’s yang. The heart’s yang then becomes hyperactive, and this ’deficiency fire’ blazes upward, rushing into your head. This makes the mind feel hot and agitated, the spirit becomes restless, and sleep becomes impossible."

"Once this natural pattern of yin rising and yang falling is disrupted, it becomes quite difficult to correct. That’s why your sleeplessness is so persistent."

"Sleeplessness is also closely related to the liver, which is responsible for storing blood.

As the *Inner Jing* says in the ’Chapter on the Generation of the Five Viscera,’ ’when a person lies down to sleep, the blood returns to the liver.’

Similarly, the *Introduction to Medicine* states: ’When one is active, blood circulates through the meridians; when one is at rest, blood returns to the liver.’

This means that when you’re active, blood flows out to all your meridians. When you quiet down and prepare for sleep, that blood should return to be stored in the liver.

If your liver blood is deficient, or your liver qi is stagnant, it leads to a state where the spirit cannot rest and the blood cannot return home to the liver. This is why people often can’t fall asleep during the *zi* hour—from 11 PM to 1 AM—which is precisely when the liver meridian is at its peak."

"Furthermore, sleeplessness can be caused by imbalances in yin and yang, qi and blood, and various bodily fluids. For instance, overexerting yourself mentally or physically, or things that deplete qi and blood—like blood loss after childbirth, just as an example—can all trigger it. Therefore, the key to treatment is to re-establish the connection between the heart and kidneys and to clear out that agitating heat."

Deng Haiyang listened, somewhat baffled.

In fact, he didn’t understand most of it.

But what he cared about most was just how serious his condition was.

"Dr. Li, just how serious is my condition? I really can’t sleep at all through the night. I want to sleep but I can’t, yet I’m completely exhausted. This feeling is torture."

Li Xu calmly took his pulse and carefully observed his tongue. "Judging from your pulse and your symptoms, the normal process of converting Yin Qi to Yang Qi has been disrupted. This is what’s causing your sleeplessness—or ’neurasthenia,’ as your Western doctor called it. But don’t worry too much. While this condition can be persistent and difficult to resolve, it’s by no means untreatable."

"It’s just as the *Jingyue Complete Book* states: ’Though the manifestations of sleeplessness are many, they can all be understood through two principles: pathogenic influence versus constitutional strength. Sleep is rooted in yin, and the spirit is its master. When the spirit is at peace, one sleeps. When the spirit is restless, one cannot sleep. As for why the spirit is restless, there are two reasons: one is the disturbance from pathogenic qi, and the other is an insufficiency of nutritive qi.’

What this means is that sleep fundamentally relies on Yin Qi, and your spirit, or *shen*, is the master that governs sleep.

If the spirit is calm, you can sleep. If the spirit is agitated, you cannot.

And the reasons for the spirit’s agitation are, on the one hand, interference from pathogenic factors, and on the other, a deficiency of nutritive qi—that is, the qi derived from nourishment and blood. That’s why the primary pathological site for sleeplessness is the heart, because the heart houses the spirit."
