Chapter 405: Chapter 354: Questions

They found an opportunity to present the questions in their hearts to the weary-faced commander.

"General, these attacking creatures seem to be of a fixed type, and like..." Jeming pondered his words, "...like some kind of mass-produced cannon fodder unit?"

The commander looked at Jeming unexpectedly, seemingly surprised that this "technical advisor" could see through it.

He nodded, his tone heavy, "That’s right, these are all their expendable vanguard units. The real trouble is those with higher intelligence behind them, piloting strange vehicles—the ’Blue-Skinned Ghosts’ themselves. They are the real commanders and tough adversaries."

"Blue-Skinned Ghosts?" Reks keenly picked up on the term, "Are there any samples or captives we can examine?"

"Yes, because their skin is blue. We’ve captured some remnants, but not many; they seem to have some self-destruct mechanism or be retrieved promptly by their companions, making it difficult to get complete research samples." The commander shook his head, "Currently, we don’t have any in hand."

This left Jeming and Reks somewhat disappointed.

In the following days, they behaved unusually "obedient."

They did not make any further requests to enter dangerous areas, merely using the observatory data provided by the base for analysis.

Occasionally, under absolute protection, they performed some environmental parameter collection in the base’s periphery.

It’s not that Jeming and his team didn’t want to gather more data; they were well aware that in their current state, reduced to ordinary humans, rashly stepping onto the battlefield was akin to courting death.

Their "cooperation" and "professionalism" earned the goodwill of the commander, gradually lowering the security level.

In fact, to satisfy their need for "more detailed battlefield environment data," the commander specially arranged for an experienced, well-equipped squad to escort them to an area relatively close to the front line, where a small-scale skirmish had recently occurred for "field reconnaissance."

However, during this reconnaissance trip, an incident occurred.

"Attention! Enemy attack!"

Accompanied by piercing alarm sounds, Jeming and Reks quickly huddled behind the protection squad.

Confirming there was no ambush on their side, they cautiously used remote observation tools to view the so-called enemy.

It was a unit of about ten "alien" entities, including a few creatures resembling molten core dogs and two crudely designed, insect-like walking mechas.

This team somehow broke through the front’s warning network and appeared in the hillside area on the flank, confronting the escort squad where Jeming and his group were located!

At this point, the opponent seemed surprised to encounter enemies; although the two walking mechas hadn’t reacted yet, the surrounding biochemical beasts were already assuming attack positions.

"Protect the technical staff!" roared the escort captain, and the well-trained soldiers immediately spread out like a fan shape. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Energy rifles spewed out scorching beams of light, and automatic turrets swiftly deployed from the transport vehicle, creating a makeshift defense line.

The battle erupted suddenly and intensely.

The fireballs spat out by the molten core dogs exploded into brilliant but dangerous glows on the energy shield, and the rapid-fire energy weapons of the walking mechas raked scorches across the ground.

Relying on their superior firepower and excellent equipment, the escort squad firmly occupied the upper hand.

Their marksmanship was precise, their coordination flawless, and soon they suppressed and annihilated the lone enemy squad.

The whole process went remarkably smoothly; under the soldiers’ tight protection, Jeming and Reks didn’t feel greatly threatened.

However, their eyes remained fixed on the two walking mechas, which had been thoroughly attended to, ultimately rendered smoking and disabled.

As the battle concluded, cleanup operations commenced.

The soldiers carefully inspected each "corpse" to ensure there was no remaining threat.

"Sir! There’s a mecha here, the core was destroyed, but the exterior is relatively intact!" a soldier reported loudly.

Jeming and Reks were moved; they exchanged a glance, and Reks promptly requested the escort captain: "Captain, this relatively intact enemy vehicle holds significant research value! It might help us find their weaknesses; please allow us to take it back to the base for analysis!"

The captain looked at the two "shaken but still dutiful" technical experts and then at the strange mecha, its structure mostly intact despite the damage.

After weighing his options, he nodded.

Actually, he didn’t think Jeming and his team would discover anything new; after all, they had already analyzed these Blue-Skinned Ghosts numerous times.

However, he also understood the researchers’ insatiable curiosity, and since a transport vehicle was available to help bring it back, it wasn’t much trouble.

More importantly, with this task over, they could end this tedious protection duty and return.

So, with the soldiers’ assistance, the "alien" mecha, emitting the smell of scorched rubber and strange machine oil, was carefully loaded onto the transport vehicle and sent back to the secret research warehouse at the rear base.

With the commander’s approval, the two immediately engaged in a dissection analysis of the mecha.

Once they pried open the twisted armor, revealing the cockpit, they found it held the remains of a pilot already devoid of life.

As the commander said, it was a non-human-like creature.

The skin was an unnatural indigo color, the build slightly thinner than a regular human, the head proportionately larger, facial features somewhat similar to humans, but with many tentacle-like limbs and no evident hair.

However, when Reks used the base’s medical scanning equipment for deep dissection analysis, a more shocking discovery emerged.

"Jeming, look here!" Reks pointed at the internal structure diagram constructed in the holographic projection, his voice laden with suppressed excitement, "Next to its cycle, this parallel distribution system, similar to a neural network yet different, the pipeline system... this structure, these potential node distributions..."

Jeming focused on the view; as a Wizard, he was intimately familiar with the energy flow within life forms.

The complex meridian system before him, although different in details from any cultivation system he knew, was clearly designed for the efficient guidance and accommodation of some sort of extraordinary energy!

In other words, it had a physiological foundation with casting potential!

Moreover, this type of creature was likely born theoretically possessing super energy.

Only under the special rules suppressing in this Plane was this inherent advantage erased, leading them to be dominated by humans.

Jeming and Reks exchanged a glance, both seeing understanding in the other’s eyes.

"Throughout my travels, besides a few rare individuals, the planets’ majority remain human," Jeming suddenly said.

"Based on this situation, the indigenous civilization of this Plane is likely the human society we currently inhabit," Reks said in a low voice, "And these aliens, including those cannon fodder creatures from before... as long as they are non-human life forms, are specifically set by this Plane’s ’system’ as the ’enemy faction’."

After all, humans and other species have vastly different living environments, and according to Jeming’s records over the past few years, the news shows that humans face more than one alien species.

Such a distinct life gap implies that unless the ruling race has peculiar tastes, this Plane’s ruler is likely positioning humans as the protagonists.

"But why?" Reks pushed his glasses, the lens reflecting icy light, "With this system’s demonstrated capability, maintaining absolute peace, or even creating a grand union of all species, would be a breeze. Why then complicate things by perpetuating a continuous, seemingly pointless interstellar war?"

Jeming shook his head in regret.

This newly added question naturally remained unanswered.

Yet for explorers, questions themselves serve as road signs toward the truth.

At least Jeming and his team now understand that these wars did not naturally occur but were "designed."

Therefore, uncovering the purpose behind this war’s design might be one of the key keys to unraveling all these mysteries.
