Endless Evolution as a Centipede in a Game-Like World
Chapter 96: Descent
The moment I raised my head, blood rained from the air, covering me in the sticky red substance. At the same time, a body severed from its head fell. As it fell into the abyss, that’s when I finally got a glimpse of what it was.
"Is that a moth?"
Two pairs of bulbous red eyes stared back at me lifelessly as it fell deep into the abyss. The creature was much larger than a regular moth and was covered in tiny dark gray hairs. But the most striking thing about this creature were the sharp fangs that protruded from its mouth.
Turning my eyes back to Amanda, I watched as the assassin proceeded to draw another knife from her waist and throw it into the abyss. A few seconds later, a loud thud could be heard.
"Keep your eyes peeled, there are more coming!" she shouted.
My antennae shuddered, sending a spark of electricity through my entire body as my senses finally caught on to the incoming dangers. Without wasting a second, I quickly activated mana sight. The dark space suddenly seemed to light up as several mana signatures became visible to me.
It was the same moth creature from before, except there were numerous of them. They didn’t make a sound even as they flew, and their dark gray color helped them blend into the darkness. Their wings had small holes in them to help them fly in this hazardous environment.
With the raging winds pushing me against the cliff wall, it over-stimulated my antennae, which was already sensitive to air currents. It would be hard to pick up on slight shifts in the air currents while in this type of environment.
This is also why I couldn’t sense the moth before it attacked Amanda. The moths headed directly for us as if they could sense our presence. Amanda threw her knives at them, hitting the monsters with pinpoint accuracy while missing only a few.
I on the other hand, shot them with googum.
Due to the strong winds, the attacks would normally drift off target, but the consciousness responsible for activating the skill accounted for that, and during precise calculations, I used the wind to my advantage.
While Amanda’s accuracy seemed to drop. You could say she missed 2 of her targets every ten throws, and for a player in the top ten with an assassin class, that was a huge margin of error. Though it was still impressive that she could aim under these conditions.
As I managed to hit all my targets, I could feel Amanda’s gaze land on me as she stopped and suddenly began studying me.
With the googum attached to the moth and each strand attached to a leg, I forcefully yanked the strands, causing the moths to violently crash into the side of the cliff. A loud ’SPLAT’ could be heard as their bodies exploded all at once.
[You have slain 12 D ranked Blood Moths]
Covered in blood, what remained of them then slipped from the cliff wall and fell into the abyss, making it impossible for me to claim any biomass from them.
"Dammit!"
With the moth dead, a strange quietness enveloped the air. Amanda sheathed her knives while deactivated my mana sight.
"We are lucky that those were just D-ranked creatures. It could’ve gone a lot worse. We should hurry before we attract even more powerful creatures. We should stop probably stop here too," Amanda said as she sheathed her knives.
"Huh, why?"
"If we’re going to fight for our lives as we climb down, then tiring ourselves out is the last thing we want to do. It’s best we pace ourselves." She answered.
Her logic seemed sound, so with no reason to refuse, I quickly agreed as I got to work creating a place where we could camp for a while. Constantly holding on to the cliff wall would be stressing for our muscles, so the first thing I did was create a large enough obsidian platform where we could stand.
"Are you sure this is safe enough to move around?" Amanda asked with some hesitation as she placed one foot on the platform to test its sturdiness.
"It should be safe. I created several obsidian beams underneath it to support our weight."
I also merged the obsidian into the cliff using my earth control spell. I managed to control my magic just enough so I didn’t bring the entire cliff face down on us. I also covered the top of the platform with googum, creating a form of tent.
Hearing that, Amanda then let pout a deep breath before placing her full weight on the platform. Her face relaxed and softened into a smile when the platform didn’t collapse immediately.
As I stood on the platform, I created a small amount of magma and wrapped myself around it for comfort. Amanda watched this action with a raised eyebrow yet didn’t comment on it. Instead, she let out a heavy sigh as she sat down and began going through her inventory.
Even though the loud humming of wounds could be heard from outside the tent, I slowly began to close my eyes and drift off, but just then Amanda’s voice ripped through the quiet bliss with a question aimed at me.
"Hey, about this obsidian of yours..."
Slowly I opened my eyes and raised my head. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶
"What is it?"
"Can you use it to make weapons? Obsidian is very sharp, and it can be used to make great weapons, but the problem with it is that it’s very brittle. Or it’s supposed to be, but the obsidian that makes your armor and the ones that you use to build this platform is much harder than regular obsidian."
"You want me to make weapons for you with my obsidian," I said, predicting what she was getting.
Suddenly she crawled towards me, using her round eyes and soft girlish face to help my answer. She was at just the right angle where I could get a peek at something I wasn’t suppose to.
"Would you?"
"Uhh, sure."
Since it didn’t cost me anything and she would be helping me during this journey, I guess this was the least I could do.
A small smile spread across her face as she clapped her hands.
"Wonderful?"
"You know, you should be careful how you carry yourself, especially with how you’re dressed.
Innocently, she placed her finger on her lips.
"Whatever do you mean? Is my clothing too distracted for you? Tell me what part of me do you find distracting, maybe I can fix it."
The conversation suddenly took an uncomfortable turn.
"Well, not for me particularly but..."
"Good, then we should be fine." She said before bopping me on the head and turning around.
She’s messing with me.
Amelia was right, it is infuriating.
Though this didn’t seem to bother her at all. She seemed like the type that doesn’t care what anyone thinks of her.
After a couple of hours of rest, we continued our journey down the cliff. On our way down, we encountered more moth-like creatures and a few monsters that looked like bats, but we made short work of them since these creatures were mostly weak.
It felt as if this was just the prelude to the dangers that awaited us at the bottom.
We kept our pace slow and steady, and after 5 arduous days, we finally neared the bottom. The area near the bottom was shrouded in mist, and we could hear the sound of crashing waves for the last day and a half. Mixed with the humming of winds, it formed an ominous melody that was more terrifying than anything I had encountered so far/.
As soon as we finally reached the bottom, what met our eyes wasn’t land, instead, it was a vast black ocean with waters like ink.
