Chapter 182: Chapter 183: Memories of the Fallen

Emma grabbed her mother’s outstretched hand just as the bubble prison exploded completely.

They fell through spinning darkness, tumbling past floating chunks of broken reality. Emma’s resurrection power flared automatically, wrapping them all in silver light as they crashed into something solid.

"Everyone okay?" Marcus groaned, picking himself up from what looked like a floor made of swirling galaxies.

"Mom!" Emma threw herself at the woman she thought had been dead for years. "I can’t believe you’re really here!"

But when she hugged her mother, something felt wrong. The woman was cold as ice, and Emma couldn’t feel a heartbeat.

"Emma, sweetheart," her mother said softly. "I need to tell you something important."

"What is it?"

"I’m not actually alive."

Emma jerked back like she’d been slapped. "What do you mean?"

"The Necro-Sovereign didn’t lie exactly. I never died in the traditional way. But I’m not alive either. I’m something in between."

Before Emma could ask more questions, the space around them lit up with thousands of glowing figures.

"Welcome to the Nexus," Marcus said quietly. "The place between all worlds."

Emma gasped. Everywhere she looked, ghostly people were floating in the strange space. Some looked normal, others were twisted and strange, but they all had one thing in common - they were staring directly at her.

"Who are they?" Kael whispered, moving closer to Emma.

"The souls the Devourer took," her mother answered. "Every person it consumed from every dimension is trapped here."

Suddenly, voices filled Emma’s head. Not scary voices, but sad and desperate ones.

Help us, Emma.

We’ve been waiting so long.

The monster lied to you about everything.

Emma stumbled backward. "I can hear them. They’re talking to me!"

"Your resurrection power connects you to all souls," her mother explained. "Living, dead, and trapped in between."

More voices joined the chorus in Emma’s mind:

The Necro-Sovereign isn’t from a dead universe.

It created that universe to practice controlling souls.

It’s been planning this invasion for thousands of years.

Your family bloodline was bred specifically for this moment.

Emma felt sick. "What do they mean, bred for this moment?"

Her mother’s face crumpled with sadness. "Our family line carries special genes that make resurrection possible. The Necro-Sovereign has been guiding our ancestors’ choices for generations, making sure you would be born with maximum power."

"So I’m just some kind of weapon?" Emma’s voice cracked.

"No, honey. You’re much more than it planned for."

A new voice made everyone spin around. It was Shadow Emma, but she looked different now - less scary and more desperate.

"Finally!" Shadow Emma said, appearing next to them. "I’ve been trying to reach you for hours!"

"Stay back!" Kael stepped between the shadow version and his daughter.

"I’m not here to fight," Shadow Emma insisted. "I’m here to warn her. Emma, if you use your power the way the Cosmic Judge suggested, you’ll destroy yourself completely."

"The Cosmic Judge said I might die, but—"

"Not die. Destroy. There’s a difference. If you experience trillions of deaths at once, your soul will shatter into pieces so small that nothing can put you back together."

Emma felt her knees go weak. "But if I don’t try to balance life and death, the Necro-Sovereign wins."

"There has to be another way," Shadow Emma said fiercely. "I won’t let you sacrifice yourself for nothing."

That’s when the trapped souls started getting louder in Emma’s head:

There is another way.

But you have to trust us.

We can share the burden of the deaths.

If all of us experience the pain together, you won’t be destroyed.

Emma’s eyes widened. "They’re saying they can help me survive the mass resurrection!"

"How?" Marcus asked.

We become one mind temporarily.

Share the power, share the pain.

But the Necro-Sovereign will try to stop us.

It needs you isolated and alone.

Shadow Emma grabbed Emma’s arm. "Don’t listen to them! Joining your mind with millions of souls is just as dangerous!"

"Why do you care?" Emma snapped. "You tried to kill me before!"

"Because I AM you! If you’re destroyed, I disappear too! And because..." Shadow Emma’s voice got quiet. "Because I love Daddy just as much as you do."

Emma stared at her shadow self. For the first time, she saw the truth - Shadow Emma wasn’t evil. She was just the part of Emma that was too scared to take risks.

"You’re afraid," Emma whispered.

"Of course I’m afraid! You should be afraid too! Every choice you make gets more dangerous!"

The trapped souls were getting more urgent:

The Necro-Sovereign is coming.

It knows we’re trying to help you.

Decide quickly, Emma.

Join with us or face the monster alone.

Emma looked around at everyone counting on her. Her father, who had died protecting her. Her mother, trapped between life and death. Marcus, who had traveled through time to help. Shadow Emma, who was scared but still trying to protect her.

And millions of souls waiting for her decision.

"If I join my mind with all of you," Emma said to the trapped souls, "will we be strong enough to stop the Necro-Sovereign?"

Together, we can do anything.

But once we merge, there’s no going back.

You’ll carry pieces of all our memories forever.

Are you ready for that?

Emma took a deep breath. Carrying millions of memories sounded terrifying, but so did letting the monster win.

"I’m ready," she said.

"Emma, no!" Kael reached for her, but it was too late.

The moment she agreed, silver light exploded from her body. The trapped souls began flowing toward her like a river of stars. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

But just as the first soul was about to merge with her mind, something grabbed her from behind.

It was the Necro-Sovereign, and it was furious.

"Clever little girl," it hissed in her ear. "But I won’t let you steal my army."

Emma tried to struggle, but the monster’s grip was like iron. She watched helplessly as it began pulling the souls away from her.

"No!" she screamed. "Let them go!"

"They belong to me," the Necro-Sovereign snarled. "And soon, so will you."

But then Shadow Emma did something unexpected. She threw herself at the monster, wrapping her dark energy around its arm.

"Let my real self go!" Shadow Emma shouted.

The distraction worked. The Necro-Sovereign loosened its grip just enough for Emma to break free.

She spun around to thank Shadow Emma, but what she saw made her heart stop.

The monster had stabbed Shadow Emma through the chest with its bony fingers.

"Thanks for the distraction," it whispered as Shadow Emma began to fade away.

"No!" Emma lunged forward, but Shadow Emma was already disappearing.

"Remember," Shadow Emma gasped with her last breath, "being scared doesn’t make you weak. It makes you careful. Don’t forget to be careful, Emma."

And then she was gone forever.

Emma stood there, shaking with rage and grief. Her other self - the scared part of her that had tried so hard to keep her safe - was dead.

The Necro-Sovereign smiled coldly. "Now you’re all alone, little resurrection girl. No shadow self to warn you. No army of souls to help you. Just you, your failing power, and the weight of every life in the universe."

Emma wiped tears from her eyes and stood up straighter.

"You’re wrong," she said quietly. "I’m not alone."

She looked at Kael, at her mother, at Marcus, and at the millions of souls still waiting to help her.

"And I’m not scared anymore either."

The silver light around her hands began to grow brighter than it had ever been before.

But the Necro-Sovereign just laughed.

"We’ll see about that, child. Because I have one more surprise that will break your spirit completely."

It reached into the darkness and pulled out another figure.

Emma’s blood turned to ice.

It was herself.

Not Shadow Emma. Not a copy. It was the real Emma from a timeline where she had already failed.

And this other Emma was completely insane.

"Hello, little sister," the insane Emma giggled. "Want to know what happens when you try to save everyone? You lose your mind and everyone dies anyway. Just like I did."
