Chapter 189: Chapter 191: Queen of the Dead

Emma’s eyes snapped open, blazing with silver fire.

She stood up from the shadow cracks like they were made of water instead of darkness. The Necro-Sovereign stumbled backward.

"Impossible," it hissed. "You were consumed!"

Emma looked at her hands. They glowed with power she’d never felt before. "I was. But dying taught me something you never learned."

"What?"

"Love is stronger than death."

She waved her hand, and suddenly she could see every soul in the realm of the dead. Billions of glowing lights stretching out forever. Some were peaceful and happy. Others were trapped and screaming.

But now she understood the difference.

"I can bring back anyone I want," Emma said, testing her new power. She pointed at empty air, and a small butterfly appeared, wings shimmering with life. "Without feeling their death myself."

The Necro-Sovereign’s hood trembled. "You think this makes you powerful? You’re still in MY realm!"

"Your realm?" Emma laughed, but it wasn’t a happy sound. "Look around."

The library was changing. Instead of the Necro-Sovereign’s dark energy everywhere, silver light began spreading like sunrise. The trapped souls stopped screaming and started looking up with hope.

"Welcome, new Queen," one of the peaceful souls whispered. "We’ve been waiting for you."

Emma felt a chill that had nothing to do with being dead. "Queen?"

"Every realm needs a ruler," the Keeper of Souls said, appearing beside her. "The Necro-Sovereign ruled through fear. But someone with your power... you could rule through love."

"I don’t want to rule anyone!"

"That’s what makes you perfect for it," another soul added. "You could stay here and help everyone find peace. Make sure no soul ever gets trapped again."

Emma felt the pull of it. She could fix everything wrong with death. She could make sure no one ever suffered after dying. She could create a perfect paradise for every soul.

But then she remembered something.

Kael’s face when she’d frozen him in time. The fear in his eyes.

"I can’t," she said firmly. "My dad needs me. The living world needs me."

"The living will die eventually anyway," the Keeper said sadly. "But the dead are forever. Think of how many more people you could help here."

Emma shook her head. "I won’t abandon the people I love."

The Necro-Sovereign started laughing. "Foolish girl. You think you can just leave? You’re dead! Your body in the living world is just an empty shell now!"

Emma’s heart sank. She tried to feel her connection to her physical body, but there was nothing. Like trying to grab smoke.

"However," the Necro-Sovereign continued, "I’m willing to make a deal."

"What kind of deal?"

"Join me. Help me consume all the living souls. In return, I’ll let you bring your precious father here to be with you forever."

Emma’s silver light flickered. The idea of having Kael with her, safe and protected, was tempting.

"Think about it," the Necro-Sovereign pressed. "He’ll never have to worry about danger again. You’ll never have to worry about losing him. Isn’t that what love really is? Keeping the people you care about safe?"

"By killing them?"

"By freeing them from the pain of being alive."

Emma almost said yes. Almost.

But then she remembered Kael teaching her to ride a bike. How proud he’d looked when she finally did it without falling. If he was dead, he’d never feel that kind of joy again.

"No," she said. "I won’t trade other people’s lives for my happiness."

The Necro-Sovereign’s patience snapped. "Then you’ll stay here forever, useless and alone!"

"She won’t be alone."

Emma spun around. A group of souls was gathering behind her. But these weren’t the peaceful ones or the trapped ones. These were different.

They looked like warriors.

"Who are you?" Emma asked.

"We’re the consumed," their leader said. She was a young woman with fierce eyes. "The Necro-Sovereign ate our life energy, but we’ve been fighting it from the inside."

"You can fight back?"

"Now we can. Your power is giving us strength we never had before." The woman smiled grimly. "We’ve been waiting centuries for someone like you."

Emma looked around and realized there were thousands of them. All the people the Necro-Sovereign had killed over the years, refusing to give up.

"What do you want me to do?"

"Lead us. Help us take back our stolen lives."

"But I thought you were dead!"

"We are. But death doesn’t mean powerless. Not anymore. Not with a Queen of the Dead who actually cares about us."

Emma felt something she hadn’t expected. Purpose. These souls had been suffering for so long, and she could help them.

But helping them meant staying dead herself.

"There’s another way," whispered a small voice.

Everyone turned. A little girl’s soul floated toward them, glowing brighter than the others.

"Sarah?" Emma gasped. It was the first person she’d ever brought back to life, back when she was learning her powers.

"Hi, Emma! I’ve been watching you." Sarah giggled. "You don’t have to choose between the living and the dead."

"What do you mean?"

"You can be both. Dead enough to help us, alive enough to go home."

The Necro-Sovereign snarled. "That’s impossible!"

"No it’s not," Sarah said cheerfully. "Emma just needs to split herself in two. Leave part of her soul here to be our Queen, and send part back to her body."

Emma stared. "I can do that?"

"You’re the most powerful necromancer ever. You can do anything with souls. Even your own."

Emma felt hope bloom in her chest. She could save the consumed souls AND go home to Kael.

But as she prepared to split her soul, the Necro-Sovereign raised its arms high.

"If I can’t have you as an ally," it roared, "then I’ll make sure no one can have you!"

Dark energy shot from its hands, not at Emma, but at little Sarah.

"No!" Emma lunged forward, but she was too late.

The energy hit Sarah and she began dissolving like sugar in water.

"Emma," Sarah gasped as she faded, "splitting your soul... there’s something I didn’t tell you..."

"What?"

"If you do it... you might never be whole again... one half might... might..."

Sarah disappeared completely before she could finish.

Emma screamed in rage and grief. Silver light exploded from her so bright it made everyone cover their eyes.

When the light faded, the Necro-Sovereign was on its knees.

"You killed her," Emma whispered, and her voice made the entire realm shake.

"She was already dead!"

"She was my friend."

Emma raised her hands, ready to destroy the Necro-Sovereign forever. The consumed souls cheered.

But then she stopped.

Destroying it would trap her in the realm of the dead forever. She’d never see Kael again.

But letting it live meant it would keep hurting people.

And now she’d never know what Sarah was trying to warn her about. If she split her soul, what terrible thing might happen?

Emma had seconds to decide.

Save the dead and lose her father forever.

Or save her father and let countless souls suffer.

The choice would determine not just her fate, but the fate of everyone, living and dead, in every universe.

And she had no idea what the right answer was.

The Necro-Sovereign began to smile, sensing her hesitation.

"Choose quickly, little Queen," it whispered. "Before I choose for you."
