Chapter 190 - 51 – Dagda’s Logh
Dagda was a greater god worshiped by ancient Irishmen. After mana returned to Earth, and the connection to other planes of existence came to be, it was confirmed that Dagda was a real god and the ruler of the elemental plane of air, or, as they called it, Mag Argatnél.
Ffyr was contemplating the huge statue that depicted the god and was placed near the entrance of the dungeon that had the god’s name. Matthew and the others went to the dungeon first thing in the morning.
"It looks like the old man." Ffyr commented.
"The old man?" Matthew questioned her.
"Yeah. A friend of mom’s." She explained.
"That’s the god Dagda." Paula said, pointing at the marble statue.
Dagda was portrayed as a very tall and strong old man, with broad shoulders, a long white beard and green eyes, wearing long robes and a hooded cloak. In his hand he carries a staff with a skull on the bottom end and knitbones flowers sprouting on the top.
"Mom just calls him old man." Ffyr shrugged with no reverence to the god’s representation in front of her.
Other adventurers knelt in front of the statue to pray for luck inside the dungeon before going in while Matthew and the others just counted their potions on a nearby table of a coffee shop.
"The dungeon is a huge island with several lakes." Paula explained to Matthew while they prepared themselves. "It has a rocky ground with low vegetation."
"It’s basic Ireland." Michael smiled. "Mini Ireland." He joked.
"What’s special about it?" Matthew asked about storing his things in his Inventory.
"Nothing really. It just produces a lot of wind crystals that are in high demand recently." Paula shrugged.
"And the enemy levels?" Matthew asked.
"Between 10 and 20." Michael said.
Paula and Michael were level 21. Tylith was equivalent to level 25. Her powers were similar to those of the Witch class.
"I’m a bit overleveled for here then. I’ll just watch." Matthew noted.
"Alright." Michael said, testing the string he just put on his bow. He had a new bow made from a red wood that seemed enhanced by magic.
That dungeon reminded him of the Chilling Highs dungeon he used to go to while studying in the Laufgraan School. Although the climate was different, an open style dungeon representing a single biome felt very familiar.
The monster simulacrums there were mostly gnomes, kelpies, dire wolves and other fauna. But what went there to hunt were the abundant Silver Clouds. As the name implied, they were silvery clouds of mist that floated with the wind. They defended themselves by casting wind spells and left behind generous wind crystals to those that defeated them.
Imbuing his arrows with mana, Michael could easily down them from afar even before they could react to his presence. Paula also had an easy time, using icicles she conjured using her familiar’s mana, Lumi, and shooting it at them.
Tylith just walked around picking up the crystals and putting them inside Paula’s magic purse.
"You said you sense demonic mana in here?" Matthew asked, looking around. "Doesn’t seem like the kind of dungeon to have any demonic thematic."
"I’m sure I felt it." She said defensively.
"I’m not accusing you of anything." Matthew smiled. "Just wondering what you have felt."
Tylith blew air out of her nose dismissing his gentle tone.
"Perhaps you felt an adventurer using demonic mana." Matthew said.
"That’s..." She thought about dismissing him, but then she agreed. "That’s actually reasonable."
"What made you think it was Vine?" Matthew asked curiously.
"I don’t know. It was the first thing that came to mind." Tylith confessed while grabbing a crystal from the ground from a recently defeated Silver Cloud.
"You’re really scared, aren’t you?" Matthew asked, worried about her.
"I am. Aren’t you? He will come for you as well." She challenged him.
"I am. But the last demon king that tried to invade Earth needed an army just to pull him through the dimensions. I don’t think Vine will be able to come hidden like that." Matthew noted.
"I don’t know. He’s not only powerful like Beleth. He’s also smart." Tylith warned him. "And relentless." She added after a short breath.
"If you need someone to talk to, you know you can count on them. They’re good people. You also can always talk to me." Matthew said in a gentle tone.
"What is there to talk about?" Tylith scoffed.
"Everything. Anything. You’ll feel a lot better if you put all your feelings out."
"Sure." Tylith sounded annoyed.
After a while, they already had hundreds of wind crystals and some other crystals as well from other monsters they met on their way.
It’s then that Tylith holds Matthew’s arm, sinking her nails in his flesh.
"What is it?" Matthew asked, holding her hand gently.
"There’s something in there." She pointed at a mound near them.
Matthew needed to focus on his Sense Others skill to sense that there was a person inside the mound.
"Someone’s under the earth. Is there a cavern nearby?" Matthew pondered.
"No." Paula said, looking at the mound he was pointing to. "That’s not a natural hill. That’s a burial mound."
"There must be a way in." Michael added.
"Is it demonic mana?" Matthew’s Sense Others skill wasn’t advanced enough to detect different types of mana, just shapes and sizes. To tell the different mana types apart, Matthew relied on his natural feelings.
"It is." Tylith nodded.
"Stay here." Matthew said, walking towards the mound.
Ffyr was the one who found the opening behind a thick bush. It was small and he needed to crawl to enter it. Ffyr used her ethereal form to go through the earth, while Paula and Michael stayed behind with Tylith who was trembling in fear.
When Matthew entered and took a look at the chamber he found a couch there and a TV turned on. Laying on a couch, there was a man with black short hair, pale skin and dark brown eyes with small red rings of light in his irises.
Matthew knew those eyes. He used to have them. An early sign of demonic mana inhabiting someone’s body.
The man’s eyes widened when he saw Matthew getting up from the ground and dusting his clothes.
"Who are you?!" The man asked, jumping to his feet.
"I’m Matthew. An adventurer. What are you doing here?" Matthew asked, looking around at the trash spread around the floor.
There were noodle cups, pizza boxes, potato chips bags, and all sorts of candy wraps.
"Are you living here?" Matthew asked.
"Yes." The man said, pulling out a sword from thin air. "What do you want?"
"I’m just curious. Why is an Impiomancer hiding inside a dungeon?" Matthew said after using Identify on the man.
His name was Douglas, a level 22 adventurer, level 5 Mage, level 5 Caller, Level 5 Pyromancer, level 5 Warrior and level 2 Impiomancer. Matthew’s Identify could only read the name and the overall level of a creature. However, for people who used the system, it also could read the levels they picked.
"What do you know?" Douglas asked with a threatening tone.
"I want to know what you’re doing here." Matthew said, taking a step forward.
"It’s not your damn business!" Douglas shouted and attacked Matthew.
Matthew easily dodged the man’s attack and pushed him away, sending him flying towards the TV and breaking it.
Douglas snarled on the floor.
"Your funeral." He threatened and let the demonic mana take over his body. His eyes shone bright red.
He then ignited his sword in flames that were redder than normal because of the demonic mana in the man.
He charged, twice as fast as before.
Matthew was forced to take out Aym’s blade to defend himself. Douglas was also twice as strong as before.
They traded a couple of strikes until Matthew was able to hold the man’s arm and purified his body, cleansing the demonic mana inside him. For someone who lived a long time with demonic mana, its weaknesses were well known to Matthew.
"You’re a priest?" The man exclaimed, while trying unsuccessfully to release himself from Matthew’s grasp.
Then Matthew could sense that the man was spreading his mana in a circle, very similar to the summoning circles to summon spirits he learned all that time ago. He was summoning a demon, Matthew’s Sixth Sense skill told him.
He pulled the man with all his might and slammed him onto the floor, breaking his concentration on the summoning spell.
"Surrender." Matthew threatened him with his sword pressed against the man’s throat.
"Fuck you!" Douglas spat on Matthew.
Matthew sighed and cast an Entice spell on the man, quickly taking control of his thoughts.
The man then stopped resisting and now looked at Matthew with an almost empty look.
Matthew got up and helped Douglas up as well. Then he stored his sword in his inventory and sat down on the couch.
"Now, tell me everything." Matthew ordered.
"Yes, master." Douglas knelt in front of him.
