Chapter 191

A bright white light crashed into Kai's eyes, forcing him to raise his left palm over his face.

In the glittering darkness behind his palm, he caught sight of the sparks that drifted around, some sticking to his palm, others to his arm.

When he cracked his eyes open, he swallowed hard, seeing a cocooned human who had been held in a glass jar.

"What is that?" he screamed, turning to Merlin. When he shifted his gaze back to the jar, green light bounced from the inside as if it wanted to escape.

"Is that light also trapped?" he asked, shifting glances from the light to Merlin.

Merlin's eyebrow lowered when he turned and saw nothing, just the cocooned human. "What light are you talking about?"

Kai curled his lips inward, gave a short exhale, then shook his head when Merlin turned toward him. "Nothing. I just thought I saw something."

Knowing he was the only one seeing the light, Kai neared the glass jar, placed his left palm on it, then focused on the movement of the hovering light.

"Be careful with that," Merlin warned, turning toward the darkened section of the room, placing his left arm at his back.

The green light hummed with the same rhythm Kai breathed. Just as he tilted his head to Merlin and watched him flip the lights on, an electric shot lanced into his palm.

He pulled his palm from the jar, then stumbled two steps back. "Ouch!"

Merlin turned and frowned. "I warned you to be careful around that." He watched how the boy was shifting glances from the burn on his palm to the jar, then shook his head.

The burn slowly healed on its own when Kai focused on the humming light.

As soon as Merlin had switched on all the lights, he turned and called to Kai. "Follow me."

Without waiting to see whether the boy was following, Merlin stepped forward, closing the gap between him and the new door that loomed in the distance, waiting.

In the jar, the green light lingered for a while, then vanished into the cocooned being.

When Kai turned, a feather popped out from the jar, a plopping sound echoing as cracks slowly spread across the shell.

Kai's palmprint swirled around the jar, then vanished when the feathers turned into wings.

"Where did the lieutenant even pass?" Kai asked as he moved forward in slow steps, brushing his fingers along the walls.

Light blinked in the hallway, then began to turn off on its own after Kai had crossed to the next one.

After all the lights had died off, a loud voice echoed from the left, where another set of lights brightened the hallway. "Yung Chin. This way."

Kai turned and saw the lieutenant's back, then rushed toward him.

At every room they entered, Kai came upon new things he swore he hadn't seen or had thought had never existed.

When they finally stopped by a brown metallic door, Merlin handed a black card to Kai. "It'll come in handy when you see him."

Kai stared at the card, traced his fingers on the dotted lines, while wondering, 'Who am I going to see?'

Merlin shifted his gaze from Kai, then exhaled as he placed his right palm at the center of the door, where a handprint had been carved.

Mechanical sounds hummed through the walls. When it stopped, gas crept out from beneath the door as Merlin slowly pushed it inward.

Kai watched Merlin slowly enter, then followed, glancing at the door and then at the open space ahead of him.

Inside, a robotic human was tangled in a wired hook, eyes closed, nose twitching, mouth opening and closing.

The movement of the mouth continued as an electric current flowed from the dancing tiles on the walls and entered the robotic human through a cable inserted at the back of its neck.

A metal gurgling sound erupted as its eyes flared continuously, its jaw tightened, and the twitching of its nose stopped.

Kai stepped back when the robotic human gasped heavily for air as if it had awakened from drowning.

Merlin moved to the side, where the central system holding the power was, then pressed a green button.

In a flash, the fast-blinking eyes stopped, and the gurgling sound also stopped. The robotic human tilted its head and glanced at the dual-eyed boy, then smiled. "Hello, son."

Kai stumbled two steps back, tightening his grip on the black card, as the voice sounded familiar. The man who had once abducted his dream years back flashed in his head as he focused on the smiling robot.

Merlin dashed forward and caught Kai when he tripped on a layered wire, nearly crashing his head on a raised six-foot iron pipe.

"Watch your steps. Everything is deadly." He helped Kai stand, left his side, then stood by the wall, folding his hands to his chest.

Kai turned to Merlin while pointing toward the robotic human. "Is that—" Before he could continue his statement, the room's warmth depleted.

Merlin loosened his hands from his chest, then moved forward. "I told you to heighten your mind." He walked toward the robotic human, then placed a hand on its head.

Kai's mouth opened to speak, but his throat didn't let him. He took a deep breath while Merlin pressed a button at the back of the robot.

In a flash, a holographic projection appeared in front of Kai. Pictures he had seen and others he didn't remember seeing all began to reel one after another.

Images of the central city came first, showing how peace dwelt on its streets. RedBull Barracks followed, showcasing how tough the soldiers were.

Another set of images followed, depicting how the hunters dressed during the day and at night. Green pastures of Bion City followed, showing how the Sword Sect soldiers helped in the development of Westeros at large.

When images of Gilgal Village came into view, the reeling images paused. Kai's legs trembled slightly as he moved in slow steps forward.

"Mom," he whispered, stretching his hand toward the image of the lady with short blue hair that remained static in the hologram.

When Kai's fingers seeped through the slowly moving blue beam of light, the image changed into a photo. The same photo Sarge had shown to him.

Merlin's brow relaxed when he spotted a particular man from the group of seven men in the photo. "At last."

The hologram dissipated after two minutes, leaving the room with pressurized air that seemed to crush Kai.
