Gourmet: From a Stall in Northern Europe
Chapter 363 - 275: A Word to Wake the Dreamer, Farm Renovation
John had his own little thoughts in mind when he asked Lin Chen to ride in his car.
The car was fast yet steady. After all, this wasn’t a large city; most tourists relied on transportation, and even getting a taxi was difficult.
With few vehicles on the street, they could naturally speed up, and since the farm was in the suburbs, even fewer vehicles passed by.
In just twenty minutes, they reached the main gate of the farm.
Upon seeing the entrance, Lin Chen couldn’t help but put his hand on his forehead and sigh deeply in his heart.
No wonder it’s a farm-run by a Great Xia owner. The two red lanterns at the entrance... are quite distinctive!
The entrance was spacious, and there was also a parking lot, making it look like a tourist attraction in a mountainous area of their country. The difference was that the farm’s fence was a three-meter-high barbed wire to prevent tourists or animals from crossing over.
Through the gaps in the wire mesh, you could clearly see the scene inside, and they had already seen quite a bit on the way here.
The plant area was on the left, and the animal area on the right, with a clear division.
Each different area was separated by wooden fences, which gave it a slightly foreign farm atmosphere.
It was afternoon, and the farm was filled with countless tourists’ figures; even the parking lot had over a dozen buses, presumably for transport.
The most absurd thing was that none of these buses had drivers; it seemed they too had joined the tourists inside the farm.
"What kind of activities do you offer now?"
"A lot!"
John jumped off the pickup truck, proudly raising his head to introduce.
"The most basic ones are self-picking, like one or two hours of picking. The fruits and vegetables picked can be taken home or sold to us at cost, certainly lower than the ticket price, so tourists only need to pay a small fee for the experience."
"For us, it’s like hiring temporary workers to help with picking, a win-win situation."
"Self-picking is currently the most popular program, and there’s a more challenging one with capturing animals—it’s not very popular since it’s mostly small creatures like poultry."
"If a hunter comes to play, do you see that mountain over there? That’s an area we’ve fenced off for hunters to hunt. There are many beasts, but the frequency is low; having one or two hunters a month would be good, so the ecology wouldn’t be disrupted."
John pulled out the work ID hanging from his neck, swiped it on the machine at the entrance, and as the gate opened, continued to introduce the farm to Lin Chen while walking in.
"Are there only collection-related activities?"
Listening to the introduction, Lin Chen casually flipped through the farm’s activity guide John had handed over, quickly realizing the farm’s activities seemed a bit monotonous.
"Huh?"
John was proud of leasing such a large piece of land and running the farm so prosperously, expecting Lin Chen’s approval, only to see a ’That’s it?’ expression on his face.
He was dumbfounded, filled with confusion.
Isn’t a farm a place for growing vegetables and raising livestock? What else could tourists do besides self-picking and hunting?
"Didn’t President Wang get involved in the farm planning?"
Lin Chen was also confused.
A seasoned businessman capable of creating seaside resort tours shouldn’t be making such a minor mistake.
He likely just proposed a theory and a general outline, then leased out the farm to observe its performance first.
"He was involved; the sectioning of areas and activity planning were his ideas, and I just followed his instructions."
"And then?"
"And then? It became what it is now."
"No, I mean, didn’t he discuss the future farm construction and activity development plans with you?"
"There’s more later?"
The more Lin Chen spoke, the more confused John became, losing confidence entirely.
After all this time, his once-proud large farm was only half-finished?
"For instance, I’m just giving an example, I’m not sure if it would work."
Seeing John’s troubled expression, Lin Chen could guess that he might have hurt the old man’s confidence and chose his words carefully.
"Take this tomato garden, for instance. You only offer picking at the moment, so do customers leave right after picking, maybe even being choosy, which leads to many poorly-shaped tomatoes being wasted?"
"Though these could be fed to animals to make use of waste, they’re still wasted."
"What if a special area was opened for guests where they first take a course on tomatoes, learn how to grow them, and then name or number each plant with a tag, wouldn’t that give the guests a unique tomato of their own?"
Guests growing their own tomatoes? Naming them? Unique tomatoes?!
John’s eyes lit up, and he slapped his thigh.
"Snap—"
"Genius, you Great Xia people are geniuses!"
"How on earth can you come up with such outlandish ideas, it’s simply... oh my God! Simply incredible!!"
Western society values humanitarianism, treating pets similarly, with even dedicated pet hospitals, cemeteries, parks, restaurants, and more.
A significant reason for vegetarians is this compassion for life, so they choose to eat vegetables.
In such a premise, raising pets is tantamount to adding a family member.
So if we name plants and tag them as if they were pets grown with care by guests, wouldn’t that work?
Theoretically, it should work.
John quickly assessed the feasibility of the proposal in his head and soon found a gap in the details.
"But the problem is, the tourists who come here only stay for a short time, as little as one or two days, at most three to five days. How would they have time to take care of the plants?"
"For a plant to grow from a seed to bearing fruit, it takes several months or even a year at least."
"That’s true."
Lin Chen nodded in agreement, smiled at him, and didn’t continue speaking.
Under his gaze, John was first stunned and then his brain started working furiously.
After all, he was a farm owner himself and couldn’t rely on others for every idea.
"Visitors don’t have time... Visitors don’t have time..."
He muttered several times, and suddenly he seemed enlightened.
"Visitors don’t have time, but we do!"
"You mean, we could just train the guests on how to plant fruits and vegetables, and after they plant and name them, we professionals could take care of them?"
"Indeed, Mr. John!"
Lin Chen clapped his hands in satisfaction; after all, compliments are free.
Once his mind opened up, John’s thoughts became clearer as he continued to expand in that direction.
"Since it’s managed on behalf, we have to charge a part of the fee, but because the plants themselves are not of high value, the care fee shouldn’t be too expensive, the cheaper, the better, going for volume."
"Since plants can be adopted, can animals be as well?"
"If a special area could be designated for guests to adopt and name their favorite animal babies..."
The more he thought, the brighter his eyes became, feeling that in just a few words, Lin Chen had provided several paths to wealth.
After all, this entire area belonged to his farm, aside from the already developed part, the empty land next to it had not been developed and put into use yet.
Initially, he thought President Wang might have reserved this land for some purpose, but now thinking about it, it might have just been kept as a backup, without a concrete plan.
Now, with a general direction for development, he planned to take some time to research it thoroughly and then discuss the plan with President Wang. There’s a high probability that it could be implemented.
"Do you have any other good ideas?"
His face was thick-skinned, thinking since Lin Chen was here, why not ask a few more questions, just in case he had some really good ideas?
There are only a few Great Xia People at the whole hotel, and the ones in charge are just Lin and President Wang. He couldn’t possibly ask the opinions of the ordinary staff below, could he?
"Let me think..."
Lin Chen, while touring the farm, scanned the fields back and forth, trying to find some inspiration.
The fields here were almost exactly as Dais and Elsa described, very neatly organized, with each presenting a small, orderly block.
Each region had its distinct landscape, like watermelon fields sprawling across the land, grapevines climbing trellises, strawberry patches covered with greenhouses, and densely packed fruit tree areas surrounding them.
After a quick glance, he didn’t find any inspiration, just felt the view wasn’t particularly expansive. After all, with so many plants, the limited view was normal.
Thinking about it, he flipped the manual over, on the back was a complete map of the farm, with each area marked with specific species.
Staring at this map in a daze for a few seconds, a moment of inspiration struck.
"Got it!"
"Thought of a good idea?"
John smiled and leaned in, staring at the farm map as well.
This map, after all, was partly designed by him. Could just looking at a map inspire any new activities?
"Got a pen?"
John nodded, pulled the pen clipped to his front collar pocket, and handed it to him.
Without much preamble, Lin Chen randomly drew a few crooked dotted lines on the map and then made a big black ’X’ and drew a circle.
"?!"
John’s face changed dramatically as he blurted out, "A treasure map??"
"Bloody hell!"
"Damn it, oh my God, a damn treasure map!!"
"Why didn’t I think of such a simple idea?????"
He grabbed his hair on both sides with both hands and pulled frantically, his face full of frustration and annoyance.
"Hey, take it easy, my friend."
Lin Chen quickly patted his shoulder to offer some comfort.
When you get older, every strand of hair is precious; don’t pull too much, it’s all fate!
Luckily, John was already used to it, and soon adjusted his mindset.
The Great Xia People have been good at business, not just for a day or two. He had already learned this when he contracted this farm. Now it’s just another blow.
So what if he’s stupid?
Isn’t it enough to rely on someone strong?
