Gourmet: From a Stall in Northern Europe
Chapter 386 - 298: Profiteering Starch Sausages, Fish Roe and Fish Maw Are Great Stuff
Ever since he instructed his employees to collect larger fish bladders last time, they have developed quite an interest in the innards of these sea fish.
Originally thought to be rubbish, these things can actually sell for a lot of money?
However, for smaller sea fish bladders, which aren’t from valuable species, he turns a blind eye and lets the employees handle them however they please.
After all, the number of fish caught during one ocean trip is vast, a few here and there is hardly missed, even taking the whole fish home is fine.
These employees are all veterans, dealing with the sea for many years, they’ve long grown tired of it, even free gifts don’t pique their interest.
Lately, due to the fish bladder incident, they’ve become interested in sea fish innards and occasionally someone might take some scraps home to see if they can cook something.
These few bags of scraps must have been left in the car by some careless person, right?
Thinking about this, he suddenly became interested.
Fish heads and bones can make soup, he surely knows that; fish bladders have medicinal value, he knows that now too; but fish eggs... are they of any use?
Just as he hasn’t visited Lin for food recently, maybe he should bring some gifts over this time.
Thinking about Lin Chen possibly turning these scraps into super delicious gourmet dishes made him start salivating involuntarily.
He couldn’t stay put, hurriedly grabbed the bags of scraps, and jumped out of the car.
"I’m heading to the Radisson, I’ll be back later, make sure to restock as needed!"
Watching the boss’s retreating figure, the delivery employee and stall guard looked at each other in confusion.
"What did the boss carry off in a hurry?"
"No clue, but it must be something edible, hasn’t he grown tired of eating seafood all these years?"
The two of them had never been to the Radisson side, but surely they’ve read the news about a restaurant opening there, they figured the boss must be making connections, and while at it, enjoying a feast.
He’s been doing this often lately, they’re no longer surprised.
When Magna arrived at the restaurant, he spotted many people around the food truck from afar, but there seemed to be fewer than those queuing in the past.
Looking at the time, it was lunch hour.
"That’s odd, could my watch be broken? Shouldn’t lunch hour be absolutely packed?"
Carrying the heavy bags full of scraps, he jumped out of the car, puzzled, and walked towards the food truck.
When he got closer, he could see people holding numerous pieces of food that resembled blooming flowers, looking somewhat like sausages but ones he’d never seen before.
Could it be sausages from Great Xia?!
Lin Chen was finally able to take a breather, having intensely worked for over two hours to satisfy most of the customers’ curiosity; now there were only about ten left in line, and no new customers seemed to be coming just yet.
Unexpectedly, today’s busyness was about to conclude.
He planned to sell for another half-hour or so, continuing if there were customers, retracting early if not.
These starchy sausages shouldn’t be eaten too often, they’re quite a surprise once in a while but having two or three in one go gets boring, especially for these foreigners.
Once they tasted it, they probably wouldn’t wish for it again soon.
Trying out new things might just be one-time thrills, he doesn’t expect them to capture customers’ hearts, merely focusing on large sales for profit.
"Sir, your sausage... Huh?"
Just as he passed three starchy sausages out of the window, he saw a familiar face approaching from the back of the line.
With a glance, Magna excitedly waved at him, raising his plastic bags and shaking them.
Back again?
Seeing this guy, Lin Chen felt amused yet bewildered, but also faintly expectant, pondering what bizarre ingredients he might bring this time.
No surprise, they should be seafood-related.
Seeing Magna, Lin Chen recalled John, whom he hadn’t seen today.
Could he be stuck at work unable to slack off?
Heh!
With John’s temperament, if he could slack off, he surely wouldn’t be working.
Realizing someone else is as busy as himself instantly made him feel less fatigued, his mood brightening up.
On the grill, there were far fewer starchy sausages now; most were surrounding the edges of the grill, slowly warming over low heat, preventing them from getting overcooked and ruining the texture.
"Could I have two of the mixed-flavor ones?"
"Can I get one spicy and two cumin ones? I want them extra crispy, please."
Standing at the back of the line, Magna curiously tiptoed, peering ahead, eager to see how the blooming sausages were made.
Finally squeezing past a few customers, advancing a bit, he gradually saw inside the food truck.
It wasn’t a fryer as he imagined, nor a semicircular pan filled with oil; instead, it was a square grill!
A dozen pink sausages lay in the center of the grill, soaking in yellow-green oil, releasing dense bubbles.
Around the edges near the sausages lay many darker brown sausages, already blossomed, identical to those held by the customers.
Can these sausages really bloom as they fry??
After that thought popped into his mind, he wasn’t surprised; instead, he thought that if Lin was the one doing it, it’d be quite normal.
There’s nothing this guy can’t do.
Sure enough.
Right before his eyes, the part of the sausage that was bubbling in oil started to deform, with petal-like pieces bending outward from the cylindrical body.
The longer they fried, the larger the angle of the bend.
Before the petals fully unfolded, Lin Chen quickly flipped them over so the other side, that hadn’t moved, could soak in the hot oil too.
At the same time, he kept picking the ready-fried sausages around him to skewer on bamboo sticks, sprinkled them with spice powder, and handed them out to the customers in front of him.
When it was his turn, he was the last customer, and surprisingly, no one was in line behind him.
This was the first time he’d seen such a situation.
"Good afternoon, Lin! What’s going on today, why are there so few customers?"
"Good afternoon," Lin Chen calmly nodded in response, casually picked up a nearby cold cola, and took a few sips to quench his thirst.
"Because I prepared less breakfast today, after selling out, I directly started selling sausages. I’ve been at it for nearly three hours now; interested customers should have all tried them, and what’s left are those who aren’t very interested."
Although he wasn’t sure exactly how many he sold, based on his rough estimate, it should be at least four to five hundred servings.
When he first started selling, perhaps everyone was hungry, so they bought more per person, four, five, or six sticks at a time.
As time passed, the majority of customers coming out of the restaurant already had full stomachs and generally bought one or two sticks just to try the taste.
On average, it was just two or three sticks per person, which seemed normal.
Over in the back kitchen, all the preparation for the starch sausages had been done. Dais and Elsa’s hands were so tired from cutting that he sent them back to the hotel to rest.
Lucas also returned to his room to edit the last crab roe tofu video, planning to finish and upload it this afternoon.
This was tied to his task score, so, of course, he couldn’t disturb the boy’s work and even reminded him to be detailed, not to overlook any important points, lest foreign viewers couldn’t understand.
Meaning, if he wanted to, he could easily wrap up, find a place to rest, and come back when the dinner crowd arrived.
A long line had already formed at the restaurant entrance next door, but none had thought to come by and buy a few starch sausages to eat.
On one hand, most of these customers had already tried them, and on the other, having paid for a buffet, there was no need to spend extra to fill up the belly first.
Foreigners, though most aren’t great at math, aren’t lacking in intelligence.
They do know the logic of eating a buffet on an empty stomach.
"So early?"
Even Magna didn’t expect this guy to break the routine, having been out here since morning, and no surprise there weren’t many customers; turns out he was ready to pack up.
"Well, just as well. I brought something over; I wonder if it can be turned into something delicious? These sausages look so small, they’re just snacks, surely can’t be the main course without bread."
As he said this, he opened the plastic bag to show Lin Chen what was inside.
Lin Chen glanced over, and his eyes lit up.
"Fish offal??"
"Oh my, there are so many fish roes and bladders, and even fish heads. Wow, good stuff!"
Even with a casual glance, he saw quite a few ingredients that were relatively expensive back home.
Fish roe and bladders are hot commodities back home; in some places, they’re priced even higher than whole fish.
But abroad, these are just waste, sold cheaply to be processed into feed.
"Really edible?"
Magna’s eyes also lit up, and he instinctively swallowed his saliva.
He knew that bringing these weird things would allow Lin Chen to turn them into gourmet food!
After eating seafood for so many years, he already grew tired of it, and only fresh preparations could still pique his interest.
Instead, he was more curious about what these typically inedible parts would taste like after cooking.
"Here, have a couple of sausages to start with; I’ll stay open for another half hour and see if I can sell off these remaining ones since they’re already made; no point in wasting them."
Lin Chen casually speared two starch sausages, sprinkled them with spice powder, then handed them to Magna. There were about a dozen left on the griddle; if he could sell them all, it would fetch about twenty or thirty euros more, and any extra earnings were welcome.
The starch sausages were affordably priced at two euros each; even buying four wouldn’t add up to the price of a street hot dog, maybe even less. So relatively speaking, they were still cheap.
But in reality, the price of this thing was shockingly cheap.
Shunfu Supermarket would obviously sell according to local prices, four or five euros a pack, with twelve sausages per pack.
But as a wholesaler, they sold at cost price; a pack of starch sausages from Great Xia costs ten to twenty yuan, which converts to just over two euros after dividing by eight.
Shipping costs were almost negligible, given such a large company, spreading the delivery cost over each product made it minimal.
This means a single starch sausage that cost at most 0.3 euros, he sold at 2 euros, a whopping sevenfold profit!
