He Proposed to His First Love, So I Married His Archenemy
Chapter 119: The Sutton Family
The two of them ran down the slope one after the other. When they reached the bank of the large river, they saw Zoe Churchill’s wheelchair was about to topple over. Just at that critical moment, Wyatt Shaw rushed forward, grabbed the wheelchair’s armrest, and pulled Zoe Churchill back.
"Zoe, you silly girl, why would you do something so foolish? What could possibly make you give up? If you’re in trouble, we’ll all help you!" Mrs. Sutton said, chiding Zoe Churchill as she caught her breath.
Zoe Churchill, still shaken, clutched her chest. "I just wanted to stroll along the river. I didn’t expect the wheelchair to slip and lose control, heading straight for the water."
After speaking, she glanced back at Wyatt Shaw and said, a little uncomfortably, "Thank you."
Wyatt Shaw let out a deep breath, then joked, "No, I should be thanking you. You’ve given me a chance to atone."
Zoe Churchill then thanked Mrs. Sutton and Yvonne Sutton, saying she was always causing trouble for everyone.
"Don’t be afraid of troubling others. People are meant to help and love one another in this world. That’s what gives life its human warmth."
Mrs. Sutton patted Zoe Churchill’s shoulder and said she had to head back to cook dinner, so she would leave first.
But as she started to move, she realized her ankle was hurting badly. She figured she must have sprained it when she was running so fast.
"How about this," Yvonne Sutton said to Wyatt Shaw, "you take Zoe back to the guesthouse, and I’ll take Mrs. Sutton home."
Wyatt Shaw knew Yvonne Sutton wanted to give him a chance to properly apologize to Zoe Churchill, so he nodded at her.
Mrs. Sutton was very talkative and chattered all the way.
"So you and your husband moved here from Aethelgard to settle down?" Yvonne Sutton asked.
"That’s right. He’s a native of Aethelgard, and I was a student from out of town who got into the Aethelgard Academy of Fine Arts. To settle down here, he gave up his job at a major hospital in Aethelgard, and I hadn’t even graduated yet." Mentioning the past, Mrs. Sutton’s face lit up with a contented smile. "We gave up a lot, but this place is so beautiful and peaceful. It’s enough to make up for everything."
Yvonne Sutton gazed at the distant mountains and river, and the nearby fields and wildflowers. The place was indeed beautiful, captivating enough to make one want to linger.
"People always say we’re born to suffer, but I say, why aren’t we born to enjoy? To enjoy scenery like this, enjoy love and family, enjoy the leisure of each day. The world has all these rules and boxes, but as long as you don’t try to fit yourself into them, you’re free. You can do as you please."
Yvonne Sutton looked at Mrs. Sutton. She didn’t entirely agree with her words, but she respected them.
"Look at me, starting to preach again. It’s probably because you look about Shannon’s age, and she’s always talking about pressure and how tiring it is to be young. I counsel her like this, and now I’ve started on you without even realizing it. But since I’ve said this much, let me just say one more thing: that bullshit pressure? It’s all something you put on yourself. As long as a person has food to eat, clothes to wear, and their health, nothing else is important." 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
Yvonne Sutton smiled. "Yes. I’m actually doing okay."
No pressure at all.
Because Mrs. Sutton had sprained her ankle, she couldn’t work the brake, so Yvonne Sutton had to drive the electric tricycle to take her home.
"But I don’t know how to ride one."
"It’s not hard at all. Just hold the handlebars tight and twist down, and it’ll go. When you want to stop, let go of the handlebar and step on the brake, and it’ll stop."
Mrs. Sutton wasn’t the least bit worried that this novice would drive her into a ditch. She settled comfortably into the back cargo bed.
Yvonne Sutton gave it a try. It was indeed quite simple, but to be on the safe side, she decided to drive slowly.
Arriving downstairs at the Suttons’ building, Yvonne Sutton parked the tricycle and helped Mrs. Sutton up the stairs.
After getting her home, Yvonne Sutton had planned to leave, but Mrs. Sutton insisted she stay for dinner.
Mrs. Sutton was so enthusiastic that Yvonne Sutton couldn’t refuse and had to stay.
The Sutton Family’s apartment wasn’t large. It was a two-bedroom, and Shannon Sutton also had a younger brother in middle school. The siblings’ room was divided by a wooden plank, making it look very cramped, but it was cozy.
Yvonne Sutton saw a stack of medical books on the coffee table, along with an open notebook covered in dense handwriting.
"Shannon has a hiring exam for Seacliff Hospital coming up, and she wants to give it a try," Mrs. Sutton said as she prepped vegetables.
Yvonne Sutton nodded. Seacliff Hospital was the biggest hospital in Aethelgard, and its benefits were the best, so getting in was extremely difficult.
"If you ask me, the hospital here in town is much better. Her dad can look out for her, there are fewer patients so it’s less stressful, and most importantly, she can come home to my cooking every day," Mrs. Sutton said with a cheerful laugh.
Yvonne Sutton wanted to go over and help her with the vegetables, but Mrs. Sutton told her to just sit and drink her tea.
As the two were talking, the door was thrown open with a BANG. A boy in a middle school uniform walked in with a dark expression on his face. He was tall and strikingly handsome.
"You little brat, what do you have against our door? If you break it, I’ll chain you up to guard it!"
Sandra’s brother was named Hugh Sutton. He tossed his backpack aside as he entered, pursed his lips when he saw they had a guest, and started toward the bedroom. But as he reached the doorway, he seemed to notice something and turned to stare at Yvonne Sutton.
Yvonne Sutton was baffled by his stare. Just as she was about to ask him what was wrong, he spoke first.
"Oh, so you’re the Yvonne Sutton my sister mentioned. It’s not just the same name, it’s actually you!"
Yvonne Sutton raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
"Have you forgotten all the disgraceful things you’ve done?"
"What have I done?"
"You..."
Before Hugh Sutton could finish, Mrs. Sutton came hobbling out and smacked him on the head.
"How dare you speak like that! Where are your manners!"
"Mom!" Hugh Sutton clutched his head. "She’s the homewrecker I told you about! The one who ruined the relationship between my Wendy and her husband!"
"What homewrecker? I think you’re just asking for a beating!"
Without a second thought, Mrs. Sutton grabbed the nearby broom and started hitting him.
As Hugh Sutton ran, he pointed at Yvonne Sutton. "You got our Wendy blacklisted! You homewrecker! What goes around comes around for wicked people like you!"
"Homewrecker... If you dare say that word again, I’ll tear out your tongue!"
Hugh Sutton took several blows before he could escape into the bedroom.
Yvonne Sutton was stunned for a long moment. ’So this Hugh Sutton is a fan of Wendy Winters?’
’Hah. It’s one thing for these fans to be crazy, but they also refuse to open their eyes and see the truth. They only believe what they want to believe.’
"Miss Sutton, I’m so sorry. That boy has gone stupid from his celebrity worship," Mrs. Sutton said apologetically.
"It’s fine. Uh, I think I won’t stay for dinner after all." ’Why make things unpleasant for myself?’
As she spoke, she stood up to leave. Just then, the door opened again, and Mr. Sutton and Sandra Sutton walked in, one after the other.
Seeing Yvonne Sutton, Sandra Sutton’s face lit up with pleasant surprise.
"Miss Sutton, what are you doing at my house?"
Before Yvonne Sutton could speak, Mrs. Sutton began explaining to Sandra Sutton.
Yvonne Sutton felt someone watching her. She turned her head to look at Mr. Sutton. His eyes were deep, fixed on her, and he seemed to be suppressing something.
"Are you leaving? I’ll walk you out," he said.
"There’s no need, I..."
"Miss Sutton is staying for dinner!" Mrs. Sutton interjected quickly.
"Miss Sutton is probably very busy. Don’t force her to stay." Mr. Sutton cut his wife off, then opened the door and gestured for Yvonne Sutton to leave.
Yvonne Sutton felt very uncomfortable with his actions. It was as if he were shooing her away.
