Chapter 139: Chapter 139: His Apartment

Daisy Shaw kept urging her to leave, afraid she was keeping her from work.

"I’m not leaving. I’ll stay and keep you company tonight," Yvonne Sutton said.

Daisy Shaw verbally refused, but she was clearly pleased, the corners of her mouth turning up.

For lunch, they had food from the hospital cafeteria. Yvonne Sutton was used to it, but Daisy Shaw wasn’t and only had a few bites.

Yvonne Sutton was thinking of going out to buy something for Daisy Shaw in the evening, but that night, Mr. Rhodes arrived carrying a thermal container.

She had been wondering why Mr. Rhodes hadn’t shown up. It turned out he had been at home learning to cook.

"Did you really make this?" Daisy Shaw asked, surprised at first.

Mr. Rhodes nodded, looking rather smug. "From buying the groceries to prepping the vegetables, washing them, chopping them, and putting them in the pot—I did it all myself. I didn’t let anyone help."

Daisy Shaw tried a bite of the stir-fried garlic sprouts. "Too salty."

Then she tried a piece of the braised pork ribs. "Too tough."

She took a sip of the soup and spat it out. "Did you scoop this out of a slop bucket?"

Mr. Rhodes’s bit of pride crumbled under Daisy Shaw’s repeated blows, leaving him with nothing but a crestfallen expression.

"Harry Rhodes, do you think I’m dying too slowly? Are you trying to poison me by making me eat this food?" Daisy Shaw demanded, hands on her hips.

Her words made Mr. Rhodes’s eyes redden. "You... how can you say something so vicious? I worked so hard to cook for you..."

"Forget it. I just want something edible!"

"This was from the heart!"

"You have no good intentions!"

"Daisy Shaw, you’ve gone too far!"

Mr. Rhodes roared in anger, turned, and stormed out.

After Mr. Rhodes left, Daisy Shaw looked as if she’d won. Her mood improved considerably, and she began to heartily eat the salty and tough dishes.

Yvonne Sutton sighed and went out to find Mr. Rhodes.

He was hiding around the corner of the hallway, squatting and crying. He was trying his best to hold it in, but whimpering sobs still escaped.

A man as wealthy and powerful as the president of the Rhodes Group, yet even he couldn’t snatch his wife back from the hands of Death.

Yvonne Sutton drew a little closer. Hearing her footsteps, Mr. Rhodes quickly wiped his tears. He glanced up at her before hurriedly turning his head away.

"I’ve asked the doctor. This illness is treatable, but I don’t know why she’s being so stubborn. She just refuses to listen to the doctor and actively cooperate with the treatment. Please, help us persuade her. Maybe she’ll listen to you."

"I will," Yvonne Sutton said.

"She... she’s always been like this..." At this, Mr. Rhodes couldn’t help but let out another sob. "She’s always bullying me..."

Yvonne Sutton smiled. "But you still want her to bully you for a lifetime—a lifetime that you hope will be a little longer, and then a little longer still."

"I’m used to it. If she’s not here to bully me, I... I don’t know how to live."

Hearing this, Yvonne Sutton’s eyes reddened too. She could deeply empathize with Mr. Rhodes’s grief.

After having a good cry, Mr. Rhodes was still worried about his wife and hurried back toward the hospital room.

Reaching the door, he looked through the small window and saw his wife, who had just been so picky, now heartily eating the meal he had cooked. She looked so content, as if it were the most delicious food in the world.

Seeing this, Mr. Rhodes began to cry again.

Yvonne Sutton stood with Mr. Rhodes outside for a long time. ’It’s not just Daisy Shaw who needs company,’ she thought. ’Mr. Rhodes does, too.’

Just then, Daisy Shaw’s brow furrowed, and she began to rub her stomach. The pain was likely starting.

Seeing this, Mr. Rhodes rushed through the door, while Yvonne Sutton went to get a doctor.

This kind of pain was unavoidable. With Daisy Shaw’s lack of cooperation, the doctor could only give her a painkiller shot for now.

"Didn’t I tell you to bring me my blue pajamas? How can you not remember? What on earth goes on in that head of yours all day?" Daisy Shaw scolded Mr. Rhodes, even as she rubbed her stomach in pain.

"Aren’t you already wearing pajamas?" Mr. Rhodes whispered.

"I want the blue set, the one I always wear. Only then can I get to sleep at night."

"They’re all the same."

"How would you know they’re the same? You’re not me! I can see you just think I’m a bother. Well then, go! Stop watching over me. Just looking at you is annoying!"

"You’re deliberately trying to make me miserable, aren’t you?"

"I want my blue pajamas! If I don’t get them, I’m not sleeping tonight!"

Mr. Rhodes was driven out by her anger again. He paced in front of the door for a few laps, about to head home to get the pajamas.

"I’ll go get them," Yvonne Sutton said. She saw that Mr. Rhodes wasn’t in a good state and worried something might happen to him on the road.

Mr. Rhodes didn’t actually want to leave the hospital. Hearing Yvonne Sutton’s offer, he quickly handed her the keys.

"The apartment is very close to the hospital, just diagonally across the street. It’s only a five-minute walk. Twenty-sixth floor, 2601. This key is for the door."

Yvonne Sutton blinked. "An apartment?"

"Yes, Wyatt Shaw’s apartment. After she was diagnosed, she moved into that apartment for easier access to the hospital. The blue pajamas she wants are on the bed in the bedroom."

’Wyatt Shaw’s apartment.’

Yvonne Sutton hesitated to take the keys, but Mr. Rhodes was in a hurry and thrust them into her hand.

"You go on. I’ll go back to the room and get yelled at some more."

Mr. Rhodes took a deep breath, put on a smile, and went back inside.

Yvonne Sutton had no choice but to brace herself and go. ’At this hour, Wyatt Shaw definitely won’t be at the apartment,’ she reasoned. ’If I grab the pajamas and leave quickly, I won’t run into him. It won’t be awkward.’

With that thought, she hurried downstairs.

She arrived at the apartment building, took the elevator to the twenty-sixth floor, found the hidden keyhole, and inserted the key to open the door. The apartment had a large, open-plan living room with floor-to-ceiling windows, making it very bright.

The living room was a complete mess. Shoes were strewn about, a pile of clothes was heaped on the sofa, and the coffee table was even more cluttered. A cup had tipped over, spilling water all over the table, which was now dripping from one side onto the rug below.

Yvonne Sutton let out a breath, chose to ignore the mess, and hurried to the bedroom.

She went to the master bedroom, but as soon as she entered, she felt something was off. The room was sparse, containing only a bed and a nightstand, so neat it looked like no one lived there.

’This must be Wyatt Shaw’s room. Before I redecorated the villa, his style was just like this.’

She was just about to check the other rooms when she heard the front door open. It was followed by the CLICK-CLACK of leather shoes on the floor, and the footsteps were heading toward the bedroom.

Startled, Yvonne Sutton quickly hid in the bathroom.

The bedroom door then opened. As the CLICK-CLACK grew closer, Yvonne Sutton was already waging a war with herself. ’I’m not a thief; there’s no need to hide. It’s just an ex-husband and ex-wife meeting. Nothing to be embarrassed about. Besides, getting caught after hiding for ages would be even more humiliating.’

Thinking this, she secretly opened the door a crack, only to see Wyatt Shaw with his back to her, changing clothes. He had already taken off his white shirt, revealing a lean but solid back.

She could have still come out then, but in her moment of hesitation, he had already taken off his suit pants. And she definitely saw something she shouldn’t have—something very sexy.

Yvonne Sutton silently closed the door, praying he wouldn’t come into the bathroom. Otherwise, she’d have a lot of explaining to do.
