 Hector came to his office.
 Not the south training ground, not a corridor in passing — his office, with the knock that meant he had decided something and was acting on the decision. Three knocks, unhurried, final.
 Lysander opened the door.
 Hector looked at the room — the tablets, the inventory spread on the table, the shard collection on the window ledge. He had been in this office twice before, both times briefly, both times for specific logistical questions about training and supply coordination.
 This was different.
 He came in and sat in the chair across the table — the chair Arsini had sat in, the chair Doros had sat in, the chair that was becoming the chair people sat in when they had come to say something real.
 He said: *"I want to know what is coming."*
 Not: *I have a question about the threat.* Not: *you mentioned difficulties before.* A direct statement of what he wanted, plain as everything Hector did.
 Lysander closed the door.
 He sat across from him.
 He said: *"How much do you want to know."*
 *"Everything you can tell me."*

 He told him.
 Not the way he had told the group in Fylon’s storage room — that had been calibrated for six different people with six different frames of reference, pitched at the level of what each of them needed to begin. This was Hector, who had been watching Lysander for nearly a year, who had corrected his sword grip and questioned his calibrated performance and given him Priam’s approval for the Spartan voyage and asked him about the difficulties on the ship back.
 Hector had been patient for a long time.
 He told him fully.
 The climate pattern — what Arsini’s records showed, what Antiphus had confirmed in the medical presentations, what the timber quality decline indicated. The route disruption — what Ampelos’s eastern intelligence showed, what the intermediate market contraction meant for supply chains. The pressure from the sea — not armies, something harder to fight, displaced populations moving through maritime routes looking for anywhere to go.
 He told him the timeline — years, not decades, not imminent but not distant either.
 He told him what he had been building and why: the grain stores, the western farm rotation, the fishing fleet, the medical protocols, the ship modifications, the eastern connections through Ampelos, the schools.
 He told him that the Trojan War — the conflict that had nearly happened with Sparta — was not the real threat. That it was a symptom of the same pressures that were going to hit everything. That preventing it had bought time, not safety.
 Hector listened.
 He listened the way he did everything — completely, without interrupting, without the expressions that most people produced to show they were following along. Just receiving.
 When Lysander finished Hector was quiet for a moment.
 He said: *"You have known this since you arrived."*
 *"I have known the shape of it since I arrived. The details have come from the people here — Arsini’s records, Antiphus’s data, Ampelos’s intelligence. I knew something large was coming. They helped me understand how large and how soon."*
 *"And the fall. The change."*
 *"Yes."*
 *"The fall is why you know things that should not be knowable."*
 It was not a question.
 Lysander said: *"Yes."*
 *"I am not going to ask you to explain that."*
 *"I know. Thank you."*
 *"I am not thanking you for that,"* Hector said. *"I am telling you I have made a decision. I decided when you stopped calibrating your training performance and showed me what you actually had. I decided that what you know is real and what you are doing with it is correct and that asking how you know it would not change either of those things."*
 Lysander looked at him.
 *"You decided that three months ago,"* he said.
 *"Yes."*
 *"And you waited until now to say it."*
 *"I waited until now to ask the full question. There is a difference."*
 Lysander sat with that.
 He said: *"What do you need from me. To prepare the military side of what is coming."*
 *"Tell me about the pressure from the sea. The displaced populations. What does fighting that actually look like."*
 *"Different from anything the current military doctrine is designed for. Not a formal army, not an organized assault on a fixed point. Dispersed, multiple simultaneous pressures, some of them not hostile in the traditional sense — people looking for a place to land, not specifically looking to fight Troy. But the scale will be large enough that the distinction may not matter in the moment."*
 *"Miros mentioned three vulnerabilities in the harbor defense,"* Hector said.
 Lysander looked at him.
 *"Miros told you."*
 *"Miros tells me things he thinks I should know. He has done this for three years. He mentioned he had identified the vulnerabilities in a meeting with someone in the supply office. He did not say who. I assumed."*
 *"He was right to tell you."*
 *"Yes,"* Hector said. *"He was. Tell me what the three points are."*
 Lysander told him what Miros had told the group — the three specific points in the harbor defense layout where the current design failed against dispersed pressure rather than organized assault.
 Hector listened.
 Then he said: *"Two of those three I can address with reallocation of existing forces. The third requires construction — a secondary barrier at the harbor mouth. Not large. But it needs to be built before it is needed."*
 *"Yes."*
 *"I will need a reason to give Priam that is not ’my brother who knows things he should not know told me we will need it.’"*
 *"The fishing fleet expansion gives you the reason. Twelve new vessels means significantly more traffic at the harbor mouth. Current infrastructure is not scaled for that traffic level at peak times. A secondary barrier is a practical response to the fleet expansion."*
 Hector looked at him.

 *"Yes."*
 *"It is also not the real reason."*
 *"No. But it is a real reason. Both things can be true."*
 Hector was quiet for a moment.
 He said: *"You do that often. Find the true reason that is also the useful reason."*
 *"When they align, yes."*
 *"What do you do when they do not align."*
 *"I have not found a good answer to that yet."*
 Hector looked at him.
 Then he said something Lysander had not expected.
 He said: *"Cassandra came to me. Two weeks ago."*
 Lysander went still.
 *"She told me,"* Hector said, *"that you know something about me. That she has told you. She did not tell me what it was. She said you would tell me if you thought I should know."*
 The room was quiet.
 Lysander thought about what Cassandra had said: *he would not change what he does. You know that.*
 He thought about what she had also said: *what happens after is not fixed.*
 He said: *"She told me something she sees about you. Something that has not changed despite everything I have been doing."*
 *"About my death."*
 The directness of Hector. Straight to the thing, no approach, no circling.
 *"Yes,"* Lysander said.
 Hector was quiet.
 He said: *"She has been seeing this for years. I knew she saw something. She would not tell me."*
 *"She told me because I can do something with it. Not prevent it — she was clear about that. But build what comes after."*
 *"And you have been building what comes after."*
 *"Everything I have been building is what comes after. The grain stores, the schools, the network, the medical improvements. All of it is designed to survive — not just the threat, but losing people who cannot be replaced."*
 He said it directly. Hector deserved directness.
 Hector sat with it.
 He said: *"Does it change. What she sees."*
 *"She says no. She has looked at it from every angle. It does not shift."*
 *"Then it does not shift."*
 He said it with the specific quality that was most essentially Hector — the complete absence of self-pity, the immediate practical acceptance of a fact, the movement toward what could be done rather than protest at what could not.
 *"I am sorry,"* Lysander said.
 *"Do not be. You told me the truth. That is worth more than protection from the truth."*
 A silence.
 Hector said: *"The harbor barrier. I will bring the proposal to Priam next week. With the fleet expansion rationale."*
 *"Yes."*
 *"And the harbor defense reallocation — I will begin that without requiring approval. It is within my authority."*
 *"Yes."*
 *"And the third point — Miros’s third point, the one that requires a different tactical approach rather than a construction solution. I want to work through that with you and Miros together."*
 *"I will arrange it."*
 Hector stood.
 He moved toward the door and then stopped — not the Cassandra-stopping, the stopping of a man who has one more thing and is deciding how to say it.
 He said: *"You have been in my family for sixteen years."*
 *"Yes."*
 *"You have been — you — for less than one."*

 Lysander sat in the office in the quiet after.
 He thought about what Hector had said: *I do not know if he is somewhere or nowhere.*
 He did not know either.
 He had never known, and the not-knowing was something he had put somewhere he could carry without being crushed by it. But Hector had named it — had looked at the thing directly and then set it aside and moved forward.
 *That is the most Hector thing,* he thought. *Of everything.*
 He picked up his shard.
