Chapter 707: Chapter 707 I trusted you

After everyone left, the classroom was empty except for the three of them.

The professor had packed her things and walked out without a backward glance. The executives had followed, their clipboards tucked under their arms, their faces unreadable. The other students had filed out in chattering groups, discussing their own presentations, their own successes, and their own failures.

No one had noticed that Bella’s name wasn’t called. No one had noticed that she wasn’t part of any group because her name hadn’t been submitted.

Bella stood up slowly. Her chair scraped against the floor, loud in the silence. She didn’t look at Karl or Mira. She stared at the front of the room, at the blank screen, at the spot where her work had been presented by someone else.

Mira’s voice was small and tentative. "Bella..."

Bella didn’t listen. She walked toward the door.

"Bella!" Mira called again, louder this time.

Bella kept walking.

Mira reached out and caught her wrist. Her fingers were cold and trembling. "Bella, please—"

Bella turned and slapped her.

The sound cracked through the empty classroom, loud and sharp. Mira’s head snapped to the side, and her glasses flew off, clattering to the floor. Her hand flew to her cheek, her eyes wide with shock and disbelief.

Bella’s hand stung. Her chest heaved. Her eyes were red and swollen, filled with tears that hadn’t fallen yet.

"I trusted you," Bella said, her voice breaking.

Mira stared at her with her mouth open and her cheek reddening. "Bella, I did it because Krystal’s mom is in the hospital. She didn’t have time. She’s been taking care of her every night. This presentation was important for her grade. She’s gone through so much—"

Bella’s voice rose, cracking. "So do you think it wasn’t important for me? Do you think I didn’t work hard? Do you think I didn’t stay up late? Do you think I didn’t care?"

Mira’s lips trembled.

"You should have told me," Bella continued, her voice thick with emotion. "You should have asked me. I would have helped her. I would have done the research with her and helped her make a quick presentation. I would have helped." She paused and swallowed hard. "But you didn’t ask. You just let her steal everything. My research. My work." Her voice dropped to a whisper. "My trust."

Mira shook her head, tears spilling down her cheeks. "But she’s gone through so much—"

"Shut up."

The words were quiet, but they cut through the room like a blade. Mira flinched.

Bella’s eyes were red, fierce, and blazing. "Do you think she’s the only one who’s gone through so much? Do you think life is easy for anyone? Everyone goes through things, Mira. Everyone. Emotionally. Physically. In ways you can’t see and can’t imagine." 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

She stepped closer. "And you know what, Mira? You’re blind. You’re blind to how Krystal treated you. How she used you. How she smiled at you when she needed something and ignored you when she didn’t."

Mira opened her mouth to protest, but Bella continued, her voice dropping lower. "She was smug, Mira. After she presented my work, she walked past me and smirked. She knew what she did. She knew she hurt me. And she enjoyed it."

Mira shook her head weakly. "No, she wouldn’t—"

"You’re pretending not to see," Bella said. "You’ve always pretended not to see. Because if you saw, you would have to admit that your friend isn’t the person you thought she was."

Karl stepped forward, his face hard and his voice cold. "Mira, I can’t believe you did this." Mira looked at him, her eyes pleading. "Bella worked so hard, and you just let Krystal take it all. You let her stand up there and pretend it was hers."

Mira’s tears fell faster.

Karl’s voice turned bitter. "You’ve made your choice. You have your friend, the one who uses you and lies to you and makes you feel small. I hope she’s worth it." He turned to Bella. "Come on. Let’s go."

Bella looked at Mira one last time. Her eyes were red, her cheeks wet, and her hand still stung. "You should have trusted me," she said softly. "Instead, you showed me who you really are."

She turned and walked out. Karl followed.

Mira stood alone in the empty classroom, her cheek burning, her glasses on the floor, and her heart shattered.

However, after a few minutes, Mira heard footsteps.

She was sitting on the cold floor with her back against the desk and her knees pulled up to her chest. Her cheek was still burning. Her glasses lay a few feet away with the lens cracked and one arm bent. She hadn’t moved to pick them up.

The footsteps stopped in front of her. Through her blurry vision, she looked up and saw Bella standing there.

Bella’s face was expressionless, no anger, no sadness, no pity, just blank. Her eyes were red and still wet, but her features were smooth and composed, like she had tucked all her emotions away into a box and locked the lid.

Mira’s breath caught.

Bella bent down slowly and picked up the glasses. She examined the cracked lens and the bent arm, then carefully unfolded them and held them out. Mira took them with trembling fingers.

Bella reached down and took her arm, helping her up. Her grip was firm. She didn’t say anything. Mira stood, clutching her broken glasses, tears streaming down her face.

Bella looked at her for one long moment, her red eyes searching Mira’s face, her expression still unreadable. Then she turned and walked away. Her footsteps echoed in the empty classroom.

Mira watched her go, her throat tight and her heart aching.

At the door, Bella paused. She didn’t turn around. "Take care of yourself, Mira," she said quietly.

Then she left.

Karl stood in the hallway, waiting. He had seen everything. He had watched Bella go back. He had watched her pick up the glasses, help Mira up, and look at her with those red, tired eyes. He had watched her walk away without another word.

His own eyes became wet. He blinked away the wetness.

Bella walked past him without speaking. He fell into step beside her, matching her pace.

They walked in silence. Neither of them looked back.
