I Stepped Aside for Her, Now They Beg My Forgiveness Every Night
Chapter 115: Unspoken Rules... Are For His Wife?
Sophie Hughes had a slightly sprained ankle. The doctor gave it a gentle twist, popping the bone back into place.
After a moment of pain, she could walk normally again.
"Tristan, you said last night that you’ve been doing all this because Noelle is making a scene about getting a divorce. You don’t want Joshua to grow up in a single-parent home, and you don’t want the family to be unstable. I really shouldn’t be causing you more trouble. You don’t have to take me home. You should go find her."
’Noelle had gone to see Wyatt Yates again, and from what Wyatt just said, he’s clearly planning to oppose me. He wants to destroy my family and steal my wife.’ He was incredibly displeased.
"Never mind her. Once she’s done with her tantrum, she’ll come home on her own. I’ll take you first."
Sophie Hughes felt a small measure of comfort.
’At least she still had a place in Tristan Lawson’s heart.’
She comforted herself with the thought that she and Tristan Lawson had grown up together. ’How could a bond of over twenty years lose to Noelle Sutton’s seven?’
’The only reason she and Tristan couldn’t be together was their family ties. She believed that if she could just resolve that issue at the critical moment, all the obstacles between them would vanish.’
’During this time, since Noelle was kicking up a fuss about divorce, it was best to just let her.’
’The more of a scene she made, the more annoyed Tristan would become, which would only increase Sophie’s own chances of getting together with him in the future.’
Tristan had originally intended to take Sophie Hughes to The Orchidelle, but she told him she was working at Director Ford’s studio these days and asked him to drop her off there instead.
After Sophie Hughes got out of the car, Tristan drove away.
While on the road, he received a call from Tessa Lawson.
"Tristan, tomorrow is the Mid-Autumn Festival. Grandpa told me to have you and your family come to the main residence for dinner tomorrow evening."
"Okay."
Tristan had publicly announced that Noelle Sutton was his wife at Old Master Sterling’s birthday banquet. Now, everyone in their social circle knew he had married a mute, and the family was furious.
Tessa wanted to tell Tristan, but she was afraid he would get angry, so she didn’t say anything more and hung up.
’Time flies. It’s already the Mid-Autumn Festival.’
’A day for family reunions.’
Every year at this time, his family of three would return to the main residence for dinner.
Noelle would even go over first thing in the morning to help prepare dinner for the entire family.
As a wife, he couldn’t find a single fault with her over the past seven years.
He didn’t understand. ’Weren’t our past, peaceful days good enough?’
’Was such a small thing really worth her raising such a ruckus?’
Tristan found a place to pull over, took out his phone, dialed Noelle’s number, and immediately hung up.
This was a signal they had agreed on long ago.
A call, immediately hung up, meant he was about to text her to discuss something.
Then, Tristan sent the text.
"Tomorrow is the Mid-Autumn Festival and the family is having a reunion dinner. When are you coming home?"
Noelle Sutton saw the call from Tristan come in and then immediately disconnect, followed by a text message.
After reading it, Noelle replied.
"Didn’t we already agree on this? You can’t force me to do anything, including things related to your family. Tristan, I’ve made myself perfectly clear: I want a divorce. Let’s just treat this as an early start to our separate, post-divorce lives. I’ll see you at the registrar’s office in one month."
After sending the message, Noelle turned off her phone.
’She didn’t want Tristan to contact her anymore.’
When Sophie Hughes arrived at Director Ford’s studio, she was surprised to see Smith in the director’s office, chatting and laughing warmly with him.
’Looks like Smith still hasn’t given up on Noelle Sutton.’
At that moment, Smith was in discussion with Director Ford. The director had brought out more of Noelle’s work for Smith to browse through.
Smith had actually been captivated by Noelle’s work at first sight; seeing more of it only made him more desperate to recruit such a talent.
"Tutor Ford, please try to contact her as soon as you can," Smith said. "The biggest investor for this film is Tristan Lawson. He contacted me wanting to arrange a role for someone. He’s never asked me for anything in all these years. If we really can’t get in touch with her, I’ll have to agree to Tristan’s request."
Given the situation with Noelle’s son that night, Director Ford understood why she had to rush home. It also helped her understand why Noelle had been so reluctant to work before.
’But during their last meeting, Noelle had already decided she wanted to work. They must have discussed it as a couple.’
’Back in Cygnus, Tristan had agreed to let Noelle work.’
’So the role Tristan was trying to secure must be for Noelle as well.’
Director Ford laughed. "Well, that’s perfect, then. To be honest, the person you’re looking for is Tristan Lawson’s wife."
"What did you say?"
Smith was stunned.
"Her name is Noelle Sutton. She’s Tristan Lawson’s wife."
Smith suddenly broke into a laugh.
’So it was that beautiful woman from the Sterling Family’s banquet.’
’This is absolutely perfect!’
"In that case, I’ll go to Tristan myself and just agree to his request. No wonder he was so serious when he contacted me, even talking about pulling strings. He’s making an exception for his own wife! For Noelle’s sake, I’ll let him pull my strings this one time."
It was a classic case of searching high and low for something, only to have it fall right into your lap.
Smith couldn’t have been happier.
Director Ford was also thrilled for Noelle.
’It’s practically a done deal,’ she thought.
Smith said his goodbyes to Director Ford and left.
Sophie had no idea what they had discussed in the office.
But she wasn’t worried.
’Since Tristan made her a promise, he would surely keep his word.’
’Why should she waste her energy worrying about it?’
’No matter how much Smith wanted to use Noelle, he would still end up choosing her.’
’It was just like with Director Ford. He valued Noelle, but didn’t he end up taking Sophie on anyway?’
’Tristan was the best at handling this kind of thing.’
Tristan clutched his phone, his eyes fixed on the message from Noelle.
Just then, his phone rang. It was Smith.
"Tristan, where are you?"
"Out and about."
"Want to grab coffee? My treat."
Smith had come all the way to Glenwater; as his guest, Tristan had no reason to refuse.
As for Noelle... after reading her message, a knot of frustration tightened in his chest. He needed to find a place to cool off.
The two arranged to meet at a coffee shop.
When Tristan arrived, Smith was already waiting for him.
Seeing him enter the coffee shop, Smith waved enthusiastically.
Tristan sat down across from him. "You seem to be in a good mood."
Smith grinned and nodded. "Of course I am. Tristan, you really know how to keep someone in suspense."
Tristan raised an eyebrow. "How have I kept you in suspense?"
Smith didn’t elaborate. ’I’m an expert on romance,’ he thought. ’And Easterners, like my own mother, are very subtle. It wouldn’t be right for me to expose how much Tristan dotes on his wife.’
"Whatever game you’re playing, I’m thrilled. Didn’t you say you wanted to pull some strings with me? Go ahead, pull away! That role you wanted to fill? I agree! I’ll take your person!"
Smith had been waiting for over half a month for this and had even made a special trip to Glenwater.
