I Stepped Aside for Her, Now They Beg My Forgiveness Every Night
Chapter 190: She Doesn’t Know What’s Good for Her
Noelle Sutton was stunned for a long while before she came to her senses. She never expected there would actually be a turn for the better!
She had thought there was no hope and had all but given up on herself.
It seemed that no matter what, you should never give up until the very last moment.
There was still hope in life, after all.
From the doctor’s explanation, she learned it was because her cancer cells hadn’t spread. In fact, while she was on medication for conservative treatment, they had even shown signs of shrinking.
Furthermore, the hospital had recently introduced a new technology for liver cancer treatment. It could effectively control the spread of cancer cells before surgery, and once they were reduced to a certain level, an operation would be possible.
The only problem was that finding a suitable liver for a transplant in a short period wasn’t so easy.
"Do you have any immediate family? If so, you can have them come to the hospital for tissue matching."
Her only remaining immediate family was her father, but he had disappeared after her mother’s death. She hadn’t seen him in all these years.
She explained her situation to the doctor, who said, "In that case, we’ll have to search the donor registry. That process can be very slow, as many people are waiting for a match every day. We can put you on the waiting list, but it would be best if you could contact your father to get tested sooner. The chances of a successful match with an immediate family member are very high."
Noelle Sutton wrote on her notepad: "Okay, I understand. I’ll find a way to contact my father. Thank you." 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢
The medication she was currently taking was helping to control her condition, so the doctor didn’t rush to change it. The hospital had the same drug in stock, so he prescribed her that, along with an additional, newer medication.
Finally, he reminded her to maintain a positive attitude, as it would greatly help her recovery. Depression, he said, was a huge detriment for liver cancer patients.
Noelle Sutton walked out of the hospital. The sunlight today was brilliant, radiant yet gentle.
In that moment, she felt an indescribable sense of relief.
’Could it be that my body started to heal the moment I decided to give up on this suffocating marriage?’
Although finding her father would be difficult, and waiting for a suitable match would also be hard, there was still hope, after all.
It was just like her aphonia. Her grandmother had taken her to countless hospitals for treatment. After she grew up and started earning money, she had visited many more hospitals for checkups, but there was never any breakthrough.
Then one day, she suddenly showed signs of being able to make sounds, and she met Wyatt Yates. He brought a new technology, one that others had researched for years, that could cure her aphonia.
If she could be cured, she would have a chance at a new life.
A smile she hadn’t worn in a long time appeared on her face. Her inner world felt as bright as the sunshine outside, and her steps became much lighter.
When she returned to her apartment complex, the elevator doors opened to reveal Old Mr. and Mrs. Hughes standing at her doorstep.
Her expression froze.
The elderly couple came forward, and Old Mrs. Hughes said amiably, "Noelle, you’re finally back."
Noelle Sutton didn’t know why the two of them had suddenly shown up, but she opened the door and let them in anyway.
The couple came in carrying bags of all sizes, filled with gifts.
Noelle Sutton took out a pen and paper and wrote, "Thank you for coming to see me, but if you’re here to persuade me not to get a divorce, please don’t bother."
She was determined to go through with this divorce.
Old Mrs. Hughes thought to herself, ’Tristan Lawson is an extraordinary man, a true dragon among men. For Noelle to be willing to give him up... this girl must have been terribly wronged. Otherwise, there’s no way she would abandon Tristan.’
Old Mrs. Hughes quickly said, "Your grandfather and I just came to see you. It was our fault for not visiting you and Joshua all these years."
Old Mrs. Hughes didn’t dare mention that Tristan had hidden the marriage from them at first, afraid that bringing it up would only make Noelle feel worse.
The two of them were old, with one foot in the grave. Even if they didn’t know all the details, they could guess what had happened.
Noelle Sutton no longer cared about such things, especially since she was dead set on divorcing. As for why the elderly couple had never offered to visit her and her son, she had no interest in knowing.
Dwelling on these things would only stir up bad feelings.
Noelle Sutton wrote on her notepad, "It’s okay. It’s all in the past."
"My dear girl, I know Tristan must have broken your heart. I also saw how Tessa treated you yesterday. You must have suffered a great deal in the Lawson family. I know it might be too late for me to come to you now, but it’s mainly because..." Old Mrs. Hughes felt that any excuse would sound weak. She sighed and continued, "It’s mainly because we’re old and not in good health, so we haven’t been able to pay close enough attention. Can you tell your grandma why you’re so insistent on a divorce?"
Noelle Sutton didn’t want to revisit those painful memories.
She wrote on the paper: "I’ve filed for divorce with the court. The hearing is in nine days. You’ll find out everything after it happens. If you want to know sooner, you can ask Tristan Lawson. I don’t want to talk about the past. Thank you again for coming to see me, but I have other things to do and can’t entertain you any longer. Please leave."
The hearts of Old Mr. and Mrs. Hughes sank.
Old Mrs. Hughes felt a pang of heartache. ’Her heart must be like dead ashes for her to say something like that.’
They had thought they would have a chance to talk with her today, but it seemed there was no hope of that now.
Noelle Sutton had already told them to leave. If they stayed any longer, things would only get worse.
Old Mrs. Hughes had no choice but to say, "We’re sorry for intruding today. Since you’re busy, we’ll take our leave. Please take good care of yourself."
Old Mrs. Hughes pulled Old Mr. Hughes away.
Noelle Sutton’s attitude towards them was cold, but they weren’t angry. You didn’t need a brain to know that this was Tristan Lawson’s fault.
Otherwise, why else would a young woman who had married into a powerful family want a divorce?
When Old Mrs. Hughes and Old Mr. Hughes returned to the Hughes Villa, they happened to see Hugo Sterling.
Hugo Sterling had just arrived. He took out the pearl bracelet that Old Mrs. Hughes had given to Noelle Sutton the day before and handed it to Tristan Lawson.
"Noelle gave this to me last night to return to you."
Seated in his wheelchair, Tristan Lawson’s face was as black as ink.
Old Mrs. Hughes and Old Mr. Hughes came in. Seeing that Tristan Lawson hadn’t taken the bracelet, Hugo Sterling quickly stuffed it into Old Mrs. Hughes’s hand.
"Grandma Hughes, I was just doing what I was asked. Please, take it. The delivery is made, so I’ll be going now."
Hugo Sterling scurried away, afraid they would give it back to him and ask him to take it to Noelle Sutton again.
Being the middleman was not easy.
Old Mrs. Hughes clutched the pearl bracelet, sat down, and glared at Tristan Lawson. "You’re not going anywhere today," she said angrily. "You’re going to sit right here and tell me exactly what you’ve done to Noelle."
"Stay out of my business."
"You brat, what nonsense are you talking? If we don’t get involved, are we supposed to just stand by and watch you get a divorce?"
Tristan Lawson glanced at the pearl bracelet in Old Mrs. Hughes’s hand and said coldly, "You gave her such an expensive gift, and she refused to accept it. Can’t you see she’s the one who doesn’t know what’s good for her?"
