I Stepped Aside for Her, Now They Beg My Forgiveness Every Night
Chapter 20: It Has Nothing to Do with Her
Old Master Lawson’s expression darkened. Tessa Lawson recalled seeing Noelle Sutton earlier that day and couldn’t help but frown.
That damn mute. She can’t be seeing someone else, can she? What a foolish woman. She has a wonderful husband like Tristan, but instead of cherishing him, she’s out fooling around.
If Noelle Sutton really dared to cheat on her brother, Tessa would make her pay.
Since it was Old Master Lawson’s birthday, everyone from the Lawson family was present.
Tristan Lawson’s father instructed a servant to take Joshua Lawson out to play.
After Joshua left, he said with a grim face, "For a mute like Noelle Sutton, marrying Tristan Lawson was a once-in-a-lifetime blessing. How dare she skip the Old Master’s birthday? I think she doesn’t want to be Mrs. Lawson anymore. Tristan, just divorce her."
Nathaniel Lawson had been against this marriage from the start.
For some reason, when Tristan Lawson heard Nathaniel Lawson call Noelle Sutton a mute, the word sounded harsh to his ears.
"Nathaniel, that’s enough. Noelle is the wife Tristan chose for himself. As the old saying goes, it’s better to tear down ten churches than to ruin one marriage. How can you encourage the children to divorce?"
Nathaniel Lawson’s wife, Julia Sterling, chimed in, trying to placate him. "Mom, it’s Grandpa’s birthday today. It’s really unacceptable for Noelle not to come back. I think Dad is right. She’s considered lucky that a mute like her could marry Tristan. For her to skip such an important family event, she’s completely disrespecting the Lawson family."
The thought of Noelle Sutton made Talia Lawson roll her eyes. Just a mute, yet she doesn’t know her place.
Talia Lawson was the younger daughter born after Julia Sterling married Nathaniel Lawson. Julia Sterling also had a son named Ayan Lawson, who was currently studying abroad.
"Enough!" At Old Master Lawson’s command, everyone fell silent. "Tristan, come with me to the study."
Leaning on his cane, Old Master Lawson led the way.
Tristan Lawson followed close behind.
Tessa Lawson also got up and went outside to call Noelle Sutton.
Noelle Sutton had just arrived at the hotel and checked into her room. Tessa Lawson’s call came through right then. She silenced her phone and didn’t answer.
Seeing that Noelle Sutton wasn’t picking up, Tessa Lawson’s red lips pressed into a thin line. Then, she sent a text message: You have a good life, so why are you making trouble? I’m giving you half an hour. Get back to the family estate now.
Noelle Sutton’s phone screen lit up. She picked it up and saw the message from Tessa Lawson. Her smile was like a withered butterfly.
Everyone in the Lawson family felt she had married above her station by marrying Tristan Lawson. That’s why every time she went to the Lawson family estate, everyone ordered her around arrogantly.
Because she was deeply in love with Tristan Lawson, she endured it all. She always faced them with a smile, doing everything in her power to please them.
She thought her efforts would make them see her good qualities. Just as she had thought, she could warm Tristan Lawson’s heart.
As it turned out, it was impossible.
She couldn’t even win over the son she had carried for ten months, let alone people who weren’t related to her by blood.
Noelle Sutton deleted the message and blocked every single member of the Lawson family.
In the Lawson family study, the lines between Old Master Lawson’s brows were pronounced.
"Tristan, Noelle usually takes Lawson family matters very seriously. Why would she suddenly refuse to come for my birthday?"
"How should I know what crazy fit she’s throwing?"
Old Master Lawson’s aged, cloudy eyes darkened. "She is your wife. What kind of thing is that to say?"
Old Master Lawson knew Tristan’s temperament. If Tristan had been willing to listen to him and accept an arranged marriage, the Old Master wouldn’t have needed to seek out Noelle Sutton himself.
He would absolutely not allow Tristan Lawson to rekindle things with Sophie Hughes.
Tristan Lawson leaned back nonchalantly against the sofa, his thin lips pressed into a line, his cold, deep eyes fixed on Old Master Lawson.
"You’re quite protective of her." Tristan Lawson’s sharp gaze made Old Master Lawson very uncomfortable. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
His grandson had grown up. The feeling that he was becoming more and more difficult to control was very obvious.
"You married her, and you’ve had a son. Of course, I don’t want to see problems in your marriage."
Tristan Lawson suddenly let out a soft laugh. "Is it really just that you don’t want to see problems in my marriage?"
Old Master Lawson’s dark lips trembled a few times, and his wrinkled hand tightened its grip on his cane. "Tristan, don’t be a fool."
"I know what I’m doing. But shouldn’t you give me an explanation for helping her publicize our marriage certificate?"
Old Master Lawson’s yellowed pupils constricted. "You’ve been married for seven years, and your son is six. What’s there to hide?"
Tristan Lawson’s long fingers tapped gently on the sofa. "Is that what she told you?"
Old Master Lawson was a little confused. "Tristan, what do you mean by that?"
"If she hadn’t agreed to some condition of yours, why would you have used the Lawsons’ official social media account to publicize our marriage certificate for her sake?"
It was as if Old Master Lawson suddenly understood something.
"You’re not holding this against her, are you? Is that why she got angry and refused to come back?" Old Master Lawson’s expression softened considerably. "It had nothing to do with her. I was the one who publicized it."
A suspicious look on his face, Tristan Lawson stopped tapping his fingers on the sofa. No wonder she said she didn’t do it. And that she didn’t know what he was talking about.
Tristan Lawson’s handsome features darkened.
Old Master Lawson slowly stood up. "If she’s unhappy, you should take a good look at yourself and see if it’s your own fault. You really have your head in a mess, completely missing the point!"
With that, Old Master Lawson walked out of the study.
After having dinner at the family estate, Tristan Lawson returned to Westhill Villa. He walked in carrying the sleeping Joshua.
Mrs. Miller came forward and took Joshua from his arms.
"Where is the madam?"
"She left with a suitcase."
Tristan Lawson’s brow furrowed. "Did she say where she was going?"
"No."
Tristan Lawson turned and left the villa.
Now he’s acting like a proper husband, Mrs. Miller thought.
Tristan Lawson got in his car and dialed Noelle Sutton’s number, but the call was immediately disconnected. He furrowed his handsome brow and dialed again, but it was still disconnected immediately.
He opened his messaging app to his chat with Noelle Sutton and typed a message: Where are you?
After he sent the message, a red exclamation mark appeared. The color drained from Tristan Lawson’s lips. The nerve of her. Daring to block him.
Tristan Lawson called his secretary. "Find out where the madam is. Report back to me in half an hour."
Tristan Lawson closed his phone, preparing to go to the hospital to visit Sophie Hughes. He opened the center console between the two seats to put his phone away.
Suddenly, he saw the velvet box containing the voice-recording ring. His pupils constricted. He drove the car out of the villa’s driveway and pulled over to the side of the road.
He got out and lit a cigarette.
Half an hour later, his secretary called.
Five or six cigarette butts were scattered by Tristan Lawson’s feet.
"Mr. Lawson, I found her. The madam is staying at The Regent Hotel, room 303. I’ve had the front desk prepare a room key for you."
Tristan Lawson opened his car door and drove off in the direction of The Regent Hotel.
