Noelle Sutton’s phone was still ringing. Without answering Tristan Lawson, she lowered her head and pulled the phone from her bag.

The caller ID showed Wyatt Yates’s name.

Noelle Sutton hesitated, wondering if she should answer.

Tristan Lawson got out of bed, walked over to Noelle Sutton, and snatched the phone from her hand.

She instinctively reached for it.

Tristan Lawson had already seen Wyatt Yates’s name. His cold, indifferent gaze tightened instantly. With a swipe of his long finger, he answered the call and put it on speaker.

"The Little Mute, did you add Attorney Quinn? He’s never lost a single divorce case he’s handled."

Tristan Lawson’s eyes shot open. His features were as dark as iron, his black pupils filled with a bone-chilling frost.

’So she really wants a divorce!’

’And she’s scheming with another man to do it!’

’He’d just forgotten to ask her about the text message.’ 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

’And now here was another call, egging her on to divorce him.’

Tristan Lawson’s usually gentle voice was exceptionally cold as his thin lips parted. "Trying to poach a woman who belongs to me, Tristan Lawson? Who gave you the nerve?"

The color drained from Noelle Sutton’s face.

She was the one who had asked Wyatt Yates for help with the lawyer.

Tristan Lawson’s tone was thick with menace.

She quickly snatched the phone back and hung up.

’She couldn’t get Wyatt Yates into trouble.’

Tristan Lawson’s eyes narrowed, a barely perceptible sneer touching his lips. "What are you so flustered about? Afraid I’ll do something to your lover boy?"

Noelle Sutton furrowed her delicate brows, staring silently at Tristan Lawson.

Tristan Lawson’s cold, long fingers gripped her small, pointed chin, forcing her face up.

"Is this why you’ve been rejecting me lately?" He tightened his grip. "You’ve got some nerve. If you’re going to cheat on me, you’d better make sure your man has what it takes to face me!"

Tristan Lawson flung her face away.

Fury spread across his handsome features.

Noelle Sutton kept her head turned, biting her lip hard.

Her fingers curled into a fist, her knuckles turning white.

Tristan Lawson pulled out his phone and made a call.

"Secretary Shaw, get me everything you can find on Wyatt Yates. I want it in half an hour!"

Tristan Lawson practically spat the words out through gritted teeth.

Noelle Sutton immediately spun around, rushed forward to grab Tristan Lawson’s arm, and shook her head frantically.

Telling him not to.

Seeing her gaze grow frantic with worry for another man made Tristan Lawson’s chest tighten uncomfortably.

He flung his arm out, and Noelle Sutton, losing her balance, stumbled and fell to the floor.

Tristan Lawson’s eyes tightened. He almost stepped forward, but forced himself to stop.

He looked down at Noelle Sutton’s face—so pure, so pitiful.

’She certainly looked pitiable.’

’Which only made him angrier.’

Noelle Sutton’s hands flew in frantic, anxious signs. "Getting a lawyer for the divorce has nothing to do with Wyatt Yates! I was the one who asked him for help. Please, don’t drag an innocent person into this."

"Too late!"

The man’s voice was grim.

Noelle Sutton’s mind was in turmoil.

’Wyatt Yates was only trying to help. If the Yates Family ran into trouble because of her...’

’She would be to blame!’

She scrambled to her feet, grabbed the front of Tristan Lawson’s shirt, and continued to shake her head.

Tristan Lawson grabbed her by the shoulders and shoved her against the wall.

His powerful presence was overwhelming.

Tristan Lawson’s voice was low and cold. "Have I been too lenient with you? Is that why you’ve gotten so bold?"

’Lenient?’

’When had he ever shown her that kind of favor?’

Noelle Sutton didn’t want to argue the point with him. It was useless.

She signed, "Wyatt Yates and I are just friends. This has nothing to do with him, from start to finish. You’re the one who won’t sign the divorce agreement, so I have no choice but to file a lawsuit."

The man struggled to restrain his anger.

A small flame of rage still burned in his chest.

He couldn’t be bothered to go over the same issue with her again.

’Divorce was out of the question.’

"Fine. You want to file a lawsuit? Go ahead. I’d like to see which lawyer dares to take on my divorce case."

Tristan Lawson released her shoulders, turned, and left, slamming the door hard behind him.

The loud BANG felt like a vicious blow to Noelle Sutton’s heart.

Her strength gone, she slowly slid down the wall until she was sitting on the floor.

’She was all alone. How could she ever fight someone as powerful as Tristan Lawson?’

’It was a loveless marriage, yet he refused to let her go.’

’It seemed he really did need a proper wife to act as a cover for him and Sophie Hughes.’

’After all, he doted on Sophie Hughes.’

’How could he bear to have their illicit love affair exposed, tarnishing Sophie Hughes’s reputation?’

’So she was forced to become a sacrifice for their beautiful love story.’

’She had known from the very beginning that she couldn’t win against Tristan Lawson, so she had planned to just leave quietly and wait to die.’

’Once she was dead, their marriage would be automatically dissolved.’

’But she had feelings and self-respect. She wasn’t willing to spend the last days of her life swallowing her pride and compromising.’

’That’s why she wanted a divorce—to leave with some dignity.’

’It was such a small wish, yet Tristan Lawson refused to grant it.’

’Did she really have to go back to her original plan and just wait for death to end their marriage?’

Just as Tristan Lawson stepped out of the room, he got a call from Joshua Lawson.

"Dad, when are you and Sophie coming back? I miss you."

Tristan Lawson’s voice grew stern. "Don’t you miss your mom?"

Joshua Lawson complained, "She didn’t even care that I was sick. Why should I miss her?"

He was still upset.

He’d called his mom, but her phone was off and she didn’t pick up.

It had made him cry.

It was Sophie who had rushed all the way back to comfort and soothe him.

Today at school, the nurse’s son told the other kids that Sophie is gentle and beautiful and that she dotes on me.

He also said that a bunch of the cartoons we watch were made by Sophie.

That’s when he found out how amazing Sophie is—she can even make cartoons! No wonder she’s so good at telling stories.

If he could, he’d want Sophie Hughes to be his mom.

After all, his own mom was a mute. What if his classmates found out one day?

He really, really didn’t want anyone calling him a mute’s son.

"What do you mean your mom didn’t care about you? Your aunt told me she stayed up all night taking care of you after your surgery!"

"Dad, she hasn’t cooked for me in a long time, and her phone’s always off when I call. I don’t think she wants me anymore. Well, I don’t want her either! Why don’t you talk to Sophie for me and ask her to be my new mom?"

Tristan Lawson’s grip on his phone tightened.

No wonder Tessa Lawson had told him he needed to have a serious talk with Joshua Lawson.

That little brat really needed to be taught a lesson.

"Is that any way to talk about your mother? Where are all the manners and respect I taught you? Your mother is the one who gave birth to you. Do you think you can just replace her?"

Tristan Lawson had never raised his voice to Joshua Lawson like that before.

He felt terribly wronged and retorted indignantly, "I didn’t say anything wrong! It’s clearly Mom’s fault. She ignores me, she doesn’t answer my calls, she doesn’t cook for me, and she left me all alone at the hospital! She can’t even talk! It’s good enough that I don’t look down on her for being mute, but she still treats me like this! Why should I still want her? Even the little tadpoles in the story could find their mama, so why can’t I find a new one for myself!"
