Chapter 24: Chapter 24: She Pulled a Long Face

Anne Sutton saw the scene and walked over. "What’s going on?"

Sharon Sutton looked up, and when she saw Anne, tears streamed down her face. "Sis."

She looked incredibly wronged.

The girl standing to the side saw Anne and said, "Dr. Sutton."

Anne had just met with them before Sharon arrived.

She had assumed they were a couple.

But she never expected this boy to be involved with Sharon, too.

Seeing her sister still yanking the other girl’s hair, Anne said, "Sharon, let go!"

"But she... she was messing around with my boyfriend."

’In my memory, Sharon is still just a little girl.’ The fact that she had a boyfriend was a bit of a shock to Anne.

’But one look at the fair-skinned, clean-cut boy, and it was clear he was exactly her type.’

Anne found it deeply ironic.

Not long ago, she’d had to treat the other woman in her own relationship as a patient.

And now, she’d run into this kind of mess again, only this time it involved her little sister.

’I really have been unlucky lately!’

Anne looked at her. "It takes two to make a baby. You should be questioning that boyfriend of yours."

Sharon shot the boy a look, then angrily ran over to Anne’s side.

...

In the car, Sharon was crying nonstop. "I loved him so much," she sobbed. "How could David Hayes do this to me? He promised he only loved me."

Anne looked over at her. "Men are all like that. You’d have to be crazy to believe a word they say."

’That’s why I don’t believe in that bullshit about love anymore!’

’Making money is what really matters.’

’You can only rely on your own hard work to live a good life.’

Sharon said, "But I really can’t believe he would do something like this."

"..." Anne said, "He cheated on you right to your face, and you’re still defending him. Just break up with him! You’ll meet a better guy. It’s not too late to see his true colors."

Sharon said, "But I’m just so miserable. If I’d known he was this kind of person, I wouldn’t have refused when Dad told me to marry into the Fawcett family. Then I wouldn’t have caused you to end up marrying such an old man, Sis."

Hearing this, Anne found her sister’s words utterly ridiculous. "What nonsense are you talking about? I chose to marry Nathan Fawcett. What, you think I’m the one getting a raw deal, but if it had been you, I wouldn’t feel bad for you? Besides, Nathan is fine. I’m not losing out here... All right, that’s enough. Stop crying."

Sharon looked at Anne. "Sis, am I really that pathetic? Is that girl prettier than me?"

"No. You’re prettier than she is."

"Then why would he do this to me?"

"When it comes to men, who knows why they do anything?" Anne handed her a tissue. "Stop crying. I’ll take you home. Dad will be angry if he sees you like this."

’If they knew Sharon had found a boyfriend who wasn’t well-off, and that he’d cheated on her on top of that, she’d probably get a beating from Dad.’

Sharon said, "I can’t help it."

Seeing her sister in such a state, Anne drove her home anyway.

Fortunately, by the time they arrived, Sharon wasn’t crying as hard.

When Mrs. Sutton saw her come in, she asked, "Didn’t I ask Sharon to bring you something? How come you came back together?"

Anne said, "I gave her a ride home."

’I was really worried about her, seeing the state she was in.’

’Now that I’m home, I realize I haven’t eaten yet.’

Mrs. Sutton hurried off to make a meal.

...

Sharon didn’t eat and went straight upstairs.

Mrs. Sutton asked, "What’s wrong with Sharon?"

Since she was close with her mother, Anne didn’t hide anything and told her what had happened at the hospital. Mrs. Sutton was speechless. "How could that happen? When did she get a boyfriend? Why didn’t I know?"

Anne said, "They’ve already broken up, so it doesn’t matter now. Don’t say anything to her about it, and whatever you do, don’t tell Dad."

They both knew Mr. Sutton’s temper. Mrs. Sutton nodded. "Okay."

After dinner, Anne went back to the hospital to continue her shift.

When she returned, she saw David Hayes standing right outside her office door.

Anne frowned at the sight of him.

He looked at Anne and asked, "Dr. Sutton, how’s Sharon? Is she okay?"

Anne stared at him. "It’s over between you two. She’s fine. We’ll look after her. She doesn’t need your concern."

"I’m really worried about her," David Hayes said.

Anne said, "If you were really worried about her, you wouldn’t have gotten another woman pregnant."

Perhaps because she’d been through something similar herself, this kind of melodrama made Anne physically ill.

It truly made her sick to her stomach.

But the boy in front of her didn’t seem ready to give up.

He hadn’t given up on Sharon yet.

David Hayes said, "Lucy Todd and I have already broken up. That’s why she’s getting an abortion. We’re never getting back together! Can you please help me explain that to Sharon?"

"What? Explain? You think that as Sharon’s sister, I’m going to explain things to her on your behalf? And besides, just because she has an abortion, does that mean what happened between you and Lucy never took place?"

Even though he was young, Anne felt as if she were looking at a living, breathing Charles Prescott.

David Hayes looked at Anne, wanting to say more, but she cut him off. "That’s enough. I don’t want to see you again. Leave."

David Hayes had no choice but to leave.

Presumably out of embarrassment, David Hayes and Lucy Todd sensibly switched doctors and never bothered her again.

That evening, after making dinner for Nathan Fawcett, Anne sat on the living room sofa, thinking about the day’s events.

She didn’t know why she felt so agitated.

’It even felt like fate had it out for me lately, throwing every unlucky thing imaginable my way.’

After Nathan Fawcett finished his meal, he saw her sitting there and asked the butler, "What’s wrong with her?"

The butler replied, "I’m not sure, sir, but Madam appears to be unhappy."

Nathan Fawcett stood up and walked over to her. Seeing that she wasn’t even looking at him, he sat down.

"Anne Sutton," he said.

Anne looked up at him. ’Usually, he vanishes right after dinner and only reappears at bedtime.’

’For him to be sitting in front of me, actually talking to me... I can’t figure out his game at all.’

"What is it? Not full?"

Nathan Fawcett: "..."

’Does she see me as a glutton?’

He said coldly, "I ask you to make one meal, and you pull a long face. Who are you putting on a show for?"

"..." Anne said, "I’m not making a face, I’m just in a bad mood. My duties for the day are done! I’d like to go rest."

She stood up to leave the living room, but in the next second, Nathan grabbed her hand and pulled her into his lap.

Anne was stunned for a moment. She looked at Nathan and said, "It’s not bedtime yet. You’re being a little too eager today, Husband."

"..."

’So, in her eyes, I’m not just a glutton, but a stud, too?’
