Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune
Chapter 40: You Can Take Her Away
The next morning, Anne Sutton was in the kitchen, making food for Nathan Fawcett.
Nathan Fawcett was lying on the sofa. He was out of the hospital...
No, it was less like he’d been discharged and more like he’d moved the entire hospital over.
The house was fully equipped, and his doctor had come back with him, too.
All that had changed was the location; it was no different from being in a hospital.
As Anne Sutton cooked, she glanced at the man on the sofa getting an IV drip. ’I’m just making him a meal. I could have just brought it to the hospital later. Was it really necessary for him to follow me home?’
She wasn’t sure if it was because of what happened yesterday, but when she said she was coming home today, Nathan Fawcett had insisted on coming along, which led to the current situation.
As she was cooking, someone walked in. "Nathan!"
Anne Sutton looked up and saw it was none other than Stella Shields.
Stella had appeared at the hospital yesterday with Chairman Fawcett. Nathan Fawcett had driven her away, but now she was back again.
Lying on the sofa, Nathan Fawcett opened his eyes and glared at her coldly.
Stella Shields looked worried. "I heard you fainted again last night. Are you all right? Nathan, why don’t I stay here and take care of you?"
"That won’t be necessary." His tone left no room for negotiation, a stark contrast to how he treated Anne Sutton. "I believe I told you yesterday that I don’t want to see you."
Stella Shields said, "But I’m really worried about you."
Her gaze shifted to the kitchen. Spotting Anne Sutton, she walked right in and said, "You must be Ms. Sutton?"
Anne Sutton looked at Stella Shields. "I am."
Stella Shields said, "Are you cooking for Nathan? Why don’t you let me take over?"
Anne Sutton looked at her. "That’s not necessary."
Many people could cook for Nathan Fawcett, but it was no use if he didn’t like what they made.
Stella Shields said, "I heard Nathan kicked you out. Why are you back?"
"..." The corner of Anne Sutton’s mouth twitched. She didn’t know how to respond. She looked at Stella Shields and asked, "And why might you be here, Ms. Shields?"
"Mr. Prescott said I should stay here to take care of Nathan until he’s better."
Hearing the name ’Mr. Prescott,’ the corner of Anne Sutton’s mouth twitched. She knew instantly that this was a problem Charles Prescott had created for her.
’He really is something else!’
’He knew Nathan Fawcett had kicked me out, so he rushed to find a replacement.’
’But hadn’t he seen me together with Nathan Fawcett at the hospital?’
’Leaving Stella Shields here... he must be doing it purely to spite me!’
Stella Shields looked at Anne Sutton. "I heard you used to be Mr. Prescott’s fiancée. How did you end up with Nathan now? And another thing... was Nathan fainting last night related to you?"
Anne Sutton looked at her. "Ms. Shields, I’m cooking. If you’d like to chat, could you please wait outside for a little while? We can talk later."
"I can help you," Stella Shields said. "If there’s anything I can do, I want to do my part for Nathan. I’ve known him for a long, long time. He’s the man I love! I heard you’re only with him out of spite. Miss Sutton, please, just give me this chance! Won’t you?"
Her tone was pleading.
Just then, Nathan Fawcett spoke up from the sofa, clearly displeased. "Is the food ready yet?"
Anne Sutton replied, "Almost!"
Nathan Fawcett sat up, glanced at Stella Shields, and beckoned to her. "You, come here."
Seeing Nathan Fawcett call for her, Stella Shields hurried over. "Nathan, would you like some water? I’ll get it for you."
As she spoke, she rushed to pour some water.
Nathan Fawcett looked at her. "Don’t move."
Hearing him, Stella Shields put down the glass of water and sat on the sofa, looking at him. "Are you feeling unwell? Is there anything I can do for you?"
Nathan Fawcett looked to the butler. "Where’s Charles Prescott? Get him over here."
The butler replied, "I’ll call Mr. Prescott right away. However, he should be at the office at this hour."
"I don’t care if he’s on Mars, get him here now!" Nathan Fawcett’s expression was thunderous; he looked furious.
The butler quickly went to make the call.
Before long, Charles Prescott arrived.
He never dared to be slow in responding to Nathan Fawcett’s summons.
Charles Prescott walked in, saw Nathan Fawcett, and said, "Uncle, why are you home? Shouldn’t you be recuperating at the hospital?"
Nathan Fawcett looked at him. "What do you think you’re doing?"
Charles Prescott said, "I was just in a meeting at the office. I heard you were looking for me, so I came right back. What did you need, Uncle?"
Nathan Fawcett glanced at Stella Shields, who was standing to the side. "Take her with you. I don’t want to see her ever again."
Hearing this, Charles Prescott said, "But... the Chairman ordered me to find you a new woman, to bear you an heir. Having Anne Sutton here will only make you angry!"
After he spoke, he glanced at Anne Sutton in the kitchen. He had heard all about what happened last night.
He hadn’t expected it. He’d gone to the trouble of finding Stella Shields for Nathan Fawcett, but it had been useless. Nathan had even clashed with the Chairman over Anne Sutton.
Nathan Fawcett looked at Charles Prescott. "Charles, I know what you’re thinking. You can’t stand Anne Sutton being with me, can you? But she’s my wife now. You’ve lost your chance. If you really want her, that’s fine too... Resign from your position at the Fawcett Group, and I’ll grant your wish. You can take Anne Sutton back with you."
Hearing this, Anne Sutton froze. She looked at the two men in the living room. ’What Nathan just said...’
’It’s as if I’m some kind of object to be traded.’
But what made her even more curious was Charles Prescott’s reaction. She looked at him.
Charles Prescott probably hadn’t expected Nathan Fawcett to be so blunt.
His reaction, however, did not disappoint her in the slightest. "Uncle, what are you talking about? As long as Anne Sutton doesn’t make you angry, I’m naturally quite happy for her to remain by your side."
This reminded Anne Sutton of how deeply affectionate Charles Prescott had once acted in front of her, talking about building a future together. ’How ridiculous!’
Nathan Fawcett said, "I’m very fond of her now. I don’t want anyone else! Don’t bring irrelevant people in front of me again. It’s disgusting."
He glanced at Stella Shields, who had been nothing but a nuisance since she arrived, and his tone was merciless.
Hearing Nathan Fawcett’s words, Stella Shields stiffened. She never thought Nathan Fawcett would despise her so much.
And... he’d actually said he was very fond of Anne Sutton?
Stella Shields couldn’t help but glance toward Anne Sutton in the kitchen.
’She was Charles Prescott’s fiancée. What on earth did Nathan Fawcett see in her?’
Seeing Nathan Fawcett’s resolute expression, Charles Prescott said, "I understand. I’ll take her back with me right now and make sure not to disturb your rest, Uncle."
With that, he glanced at Stella Shields and led her out the door.
Anne Sutton was still in the kitchen. When she saw the two of them leave, Nathan Fawcett lay back down and resumed his IV drip.
’Just now, in front of Charles Prescott, he said he was very fond of me,’ she thought. ’He sounded so convincing...’
