CHAPTER 10 — THE SERPENT OF THE DEEP

The cavern fell silent.

The emerald serpent floated upon the glowing lake, its immense body coiling effortlessly through the water. Every movement sent shimmering ripples across the crystal-lit surface.

No one dared breathe.

The adventurers stood frozen.

Lirael instinctively stepped beside Vespera.

The serpent's golden eyes ignored everyone else.

It was looking only at her.

"...Impossible."

Its ancient voice echoed through the cavern.

"The Abyss chose another."

Vespera frowned.

"You know me?"

"I know what you are."

The serpent slowly emerged from the water.

Its scales reflected the blue crystals like polished emeralds.

Unlike the monsters Vespera had fought, there was no madness in its eyes.

Only age.

And wisdom.

The System appeared.

The knight tightened his grip on his sword.

"A talking monster..."

The serpent's gaze shifted toward him.

Its eyes narrowed.

"You carry steel."

"I carry memories."

"Do not mistake the two."

The knight swallowed.

For the first time since entering the dungeon...

He lowered his weapon willingly.

"You carry Abyssal blood."

The serpent returned its attention to Vespera.

"But your soul..."

"It smells of another world."

Every adventurer looked toward her.

Lirael slowly turned.

"You knew?"

Vespera remained silent.

She had told no one.

The serpent answered for her.

"She died."

"And yet..."

"It refused to release her."

The words struck Vespera like lightning.

"So I really did..."

The serpent nodded.

"You were reborn."

"But not by chance."

A hundred questions flooded her mind.

"Who are you?"

"What is the Abyss?"

"Why was I chosen?"

The ancient serpent closed its eyes.

"I can answer only one."

"The rest..."

"You must discover yourself."

The System chimed.

The serpent lowered its massive head.

"Tell me."

"What have humans taught you about monsters?"

Vespera answered honestly.

"That they destroy."

The serpent laughed.

The sound echoed like distant thunder.

"Then humans remember only half the story."

With a sweep of its tail, the water parted.

Ancient stone ruins rose from beneath the lake.

Collapsed towers.

Broken bridges.

Weathered statues of humans, elves, dwarves...

...and monsters.

Standing together.

The adventurers stared in disbelief.

"This..."

The young mage whispered.

"...can't be real."

"It is history."

The serpent's voice became heavy.

"Before fear."

"Before war."

"Before betrayal."

Lirael stepped forward.

"I've seen these symbols before."

She knelt beside one of the statues.

"This is First Age architecture."

"It should have vanished thousands of years ago."

The serpent nodded slowly.

"Someone wished it forgotten."

Suddenly—

A wave of black energy burst through the cavern.

The serpent's expression darkened.

"It has awakened sooner than expected."

"The Devourer?"

"Yes."

"It feeds upon fear."

"It remembers only hunger."

The lake began to churn violently.

Cracks spread across the ancient ruins.

The serpent looked directly into Vespera's eyes.

"You are too weak to face it."

"I know."

"But one day..."

Its gaze softened.

"...you may become what the Abyss has awaited."

The System appeared one final time.

The serpent slowly retreated into the glowing water.

Before disappearing beneath the surface, it spoke once more.

"Vespera."

"The next time we meet..."

"I hope you are no longer running."

The lake became still.

Silence returned.

The adventurers looked at one another.

None of them understood what they had witnessed.

But they all understood one thing.

The world they thought they knew...

...had just become far larger.

Vespera turned toward the tunnel leading deeper into the Abyss.

The System's newest quest lingered before her eyes.

An abandoned Abyss Nest.

A place she could claim.

A place she could call home.

She smiled.

"Then let's stop surviving."

"It's time to build something."

Far below, hidden in darkness untouched by time...

Hundreds of crimson eyes slowly opened.

The Devourer had found her scent.
