Monstrous Allure: Reborn as the Abyss Empress
Chapter 15 — THE FIRST SIEGE
The sanctuary gates thundered shut.
Ancient locks hidden within the stone awakened one after another.
Runes carved centuries ago flared with violet light.
Outside, the army of the Holy Empire stood in disciplined silence.
Inside, fear spread far more quickly than any enemy.
Goblin children clung to their parents.
Kobold craftsmen abandoned their tools and gathered whatever weapons they could find.
Even the elderly ogre tightened his grip on his wooden staff.
No one spoke.
They all looked toward Vespera.
The System appeared.

Vespera couldn't help but laugh.
"Six percent."
Darius glanced at the screen only she could see.
"I've won battles with worse odds."
"You can see it?"
"No."
"I've simply lived long enough to recognize impossible numbers."
Vespera climbed the sanctuary wall.
The imperial commander waited below on horseback, her silver armor gleaming beneath the cavern's crystal light.
"I'll give you one final chance," the commander called.
"Surrender the Abyss creature."
"The others may yet be spared."
Vespera looked down at the frightened refugees behind her.
She remembered another life.
A crowded street.
People helping strangers after a storm.
Ordinary kindness.
It hadn't required strength.
Only a choice.
She looked back at the commander.
"I've already made my choice."
The commander sighed.
"So have I."
She lowered her sword.
The first volley of arrows darkened the cavern ceiling.
"Shields!" Darius roared.
The sanctuary defenders scattered into position.
The kobolds ducked behind the walls.
The ogres raised heavy stone slabs.
Arrows clattered harmlessly against ancient defenses.
The sanctuary held.
For now.
"They're testing us," Lirael observed.
"They want to see how we respond."
Darius nodded.
"A professional army."
"They'll probe every weakness before committing."
Vespera frowned.
"Then we won't fight the battle they expect."
She turned toward the refugees.
"Everyone who isn't fighting..."
"...keep repairing."
Confused faces stared back.
"The walls?"
"The barricades?"
"Everything."
"If they destroy something..."
"We rebuild it."
The elderly ogre smiled.
"Now that's a ruler."
Hours passed.
The Empire launched attack after attack.
None broke through.
Not because the defenders were stronger.
Because every damaged wall was repaired before the next assault.
Every broken barricade was rebuilt.
Every wounded defender found someone willing to carry them to safety.
The sanctuary itself seemed to answer Vespera's determination.
The System chimed.

The imperial commander watched from a distant ridge.
"They're adapting."
One of her officers stepped forward.
"My Lady Helena..."
"They're monsters."
"They should be in chaos."
She continued watching the sanctuary.
"No."
"They're organized."
"Someone is leading them well."
Her gaze settled on Vespera standing atop the wall.
"So..."
"...show yourself."
A horn echoed through the valley.
The imperial soldiers stepped aside.
Heavy footsteps shook the ground.
From the rear of the army emerged a massive siege beast wrapped in enchanted chains.
Its amber eyes were clouded with pain.
Its hide was covered in scars.
Lirael's expression hardened.
"They enslaved it."
Darius gripped his sword tighter.
"A Mountain Behemoth."
"They're forcing it to break the gates."
The beast roared.
Not with rage.
With suffering.
Vespera looked into its eyes.
She didn't see hatred.
She saw fear.
The same fear she'd seen in the sanctuary's refugees.
The same fear she'd once felt herself.
She made her decision.
"I'm going outside."
Lirael stared at her.
"That's suicide."
"If we kill it..."
"They'll bring another."
"If we save it..."
She smiled.
"...they lose their weapon."
Before anyone could stop her, the sanctuary gates opened.
Vespera walked alone into the battlefield.
The imperial army watched in stunned silence.
Lady Helena raised a hand.
"No one attacks."
"I want to see what she's doing."
The chained beast charged.
Each step shattered the ground.
At the last possible moment, Vespera shifted into her Abyssal form.
Her serpentine body coiled gracefully around the behemoth's foreleg.
She ignored its strength.
Ignored its roar.
Instead, she reached for the glowing chains binding its neck.
The System activated.
────────────────────────
Enchanted Restraints Detected.
Authority Override Available.
Attempt Release?
YES / NO
────────────────────────
"Yes."
Dark energy flowed from Vespera's hands into the chains.
The runes flickered.
One by one...
The enchanted links cracked.
The final chain shattered.
The Mountain Behemoth stopped.
Its furious roar faded into a low, uncertain rumble.
Slowly...
It lowered its enormous head before Vespera.
The entire battlefield fell silent.
Even Lady Helena's eyes widened.
"It bowed..."
One soldier whispered.
"To the monster."
The behemoth turned away from the sanctuary.
It looked once at the imperial army.
Then disappeared into the crystal forest without another sound.
Vespera stood alone between two armies.
Wind stirred her hair.
Neither side moved.
Neither side spoke.
Lady Helena finally broke the silence.
"You had the chance to destroy our weapon."
Vespera met her gaze.
"It wasn't a weapon."
"It was a prisoner."
For the first time since the siege began...
Doubt crossed the commander's face.
Not surrender.
Not trust.
Just a single crack in certainty.
High above them, unseen by either army, a shadow watched from the cavern ceiling.
Two crimson eyes opened.
The Devourer had found the sanctuary.
