Monstrous Allure: Reborn as the Abyss Empress
Chapter 20 — THE ABYSSAL NEST
Dawn never reached the Abyss.
Instead, the crystal ceiling of the underground world gradually brightened, casting pale violet light across the sanctuary.
Vespera stood before the western gate.
The expedition was small by design.
Darius adjusted the strap securing his greatsword across his back.
Lirael tucked several scrolls into her satchel.
Seraphine carried only her white staff and a leather-bound journal.
The elderly ogre approached with a respectful bow.
"My Queen."
"The sanctuary will stand until your return."
Vespera smiled.
"It won't stand because of me."
"It'll stand because all of you believe it should."
The old ogre's eyes glistened.
"We do."
The massive gates opened.
The four companions stepped into the crystal forest.
Almost immediately, the difference was obvious.
The corruption had spread farther overnight.
Entire groves had withered.
Streams that once shimmered blue now flowed black.
Even the air felt heavier.
The System appeared.

Hours later...
They reached the Tower of Echoes.
Or rather...
What remained of it.
The ancient watchtower leaned precariously against a cliff of black stone, its upper floors long since collapsed.
The surrounding ground was covered with strange crimson vines that pulsed like veins.
Lirael knelt beside one.
"This isn't a plant."
"It's feeding."
"On what?" Seraphine asked.
Lirael looked toward the tower.
"The Sanctuary."
Without warning...
The vines recoiled.
Dozens of them slithered beneath the earth.
A deafening roar answered.
The tower itself shook.
Stone walls split apart.
Something immense forced its way out from beneath the ruins.
It resembled a giant formed from shattered rock and black crystal.
Crimson vines wrapped around its body like chains.
Where its face should have been...
A single glowing crimson eye opened.
The System reacted instantly.

"So this was the sanctuary's guardian..." Darius whispered.
"The Devourer corrupted it."
The Hollow Warden struck first.
Its enormous fist shattered the cliffside.
Vespera transformed into her Abyssal form and surged forward, narrowly avoiding the impact.
"Lirael!"
"The vines!"
"I know!"
Ancient elven runes burst from Lirael's hands, severing several crimson tendrils attached to the giant's legs.
The monster staggered.
But it did not fall.
Instead...
The severed vines burrowed back into the earth and regrew.
"It keeps regenerating!" Seraphine shouted.
Darius charged.
His violet blade carved deep into the guardian's chest.
Stone exploded.
Cracks spread.
The giant answered with a backhand that launched the Black Knight across the battlefield.
He crashed through a ruined wall.
For the first time...
Vespera saw him struggle to stand.
The Hollow Warden raised both arms.
The crimson eye at its center glowed brighter.
The surrounding corruption answered.
Every vine.
Every root.
Every trace of black mist rushed toward the giant.
The System flashed urgently.
────────────────────────
Warning
Corruption Core Detected.
Destroy the Core.
Failure will result in complete regeneration.
────────────────────────
"There!" Lirael cried.
"The eye!"
Vespera looked upward.
Too high.
Too well protected.
Unless...
She remembered the first time she had awakened.
The hunger.
The instinct.
The will to survive.
No.
Not survive.
Protect.
She coiled her tail around a broken pillar.
The muscles in her serpentine body tightened.
Then—
She launched herself skyward.
The Hollow Warden swung at her.
Too slow.
She twisted through the air, narrowly avoiding its stone fist.
For one heartbeat...
She hung directly before the blazing crimson eye.
"Leave..."
"...my people..."
She drove both claws into the Corruption Core.
The giant screamed.
Not in rage.
In relief.
Light burst from the wound.
The crimson vines withered instantly.
The black mist surrounding the tower dissolved into harmless particles.
The Hollow Warden slowly collapsed to one knee.
Its massive body began breaking apart into crystal fragments.
A gentle voice echoed from within.
"...Thank you..."
Then it was gone.
Silence returned.
The crystal forest breathed again.
Color slowly returned to the nearby trees.
Black streams cleared into brilliant blue.
The corruption surrounding the sanctuary had been broken.
The System chimed.

The ground trembled gently.
Behind the ruined tower, an enormous circular chamber rose from beneath the earth.
Its entrance was formed from black crystal and ancient obsidian.
Serpent carvings covered every surface.
As Vespera approached...
The great doors opened on their own.
Inside lay a vast underground chamber unlike anything she had yet seen.
Incubation pools shimmered with dormant essence.
Ancient workshops waited to be restored.
Barracks, libraries, gardens, and halls stretched into the darkness.
The heart of a forgotten civilization.
The System appeared one final time.

Lirael slowly turned in place, unable to hide her amazement.
"This isn't a dungeon."
"No," Darius replied quietly.
"It never was."
"It's the foundation of a kingdom."
Seraphine smiled.
"And kingdoms change the world."
Vespera walked to the center of the Nest.
She looked at the companions who had chosen to stand beside her.
Then at the ancient halls waiting to be filled with life once more.
She remembered waking alone in darkness.
A frightened soul trapped inside a monster's body.
Now...
She was no longer alone.
She had friends.
Subjects.
A sanctuary.
A purpose.
She placed one hand upon the ancient throne at the center of the chamber.
"I won't repeat the mistakes of the past."
"I'll build a place where no one is feared simply for what they are."
Far beyond the restored Nest...
In the deepest reaches of the Abyss...
A pair of silver eyes slowly opened.
A calm voice echoed through the darkness.
"The first heir has claimed her Nest."
"Inform the remaining Lords."
"The Age of the Abyss..."
"...has begun again."
