CHAPTER 41 — SHADOW INFILTRATION

The celebration lasted three days.

The work began on the fourth.

The Abyssal Domain was changing.

Where broken barricades had once stood, stone walls now rose twice as high.

Markets overflowed with merchants from neighboring settlements.

Monster children chased each other through the streets without fear.

Blacksmiths hammered from sunrise until moonrise.

For the first time in generations...

The Abyss was alive.

Vespera stood atop the western wall in her human form, watching workers rebuild what the war had destroyed.

A warm breeze carried the scent of fresh timber and hot steel.

Lirael stepped beside her.

"You should be resting."

Vespera smiled faintly.

"I've rested enough."

"You haven't."

Lirael folded her arms.

"You fought a war, nearly died, and spent three nights settling disputes between merchants."

Vespera chuckled.

"Being Queen is somehow more exhausting than fighting Rhazakar."

"Now you understand."

A horn echoed across the valley.

Not an alarm.

A signal.

Captain Rowan approached with several human merchants.

"My Queen."

"The trade agreement has been signed."

He handed her a sealed scroll.

"The border towns have agreed to reopen their roads."

Vespera nodded.

"Good."

"Trade creates fewer widows than war."

Rowan smiled.

"I'll drink to that."

Far away...

Beyond the mountains...

A lone woman watched the Abyssal Domain through a polished crystal lens.

She wore black leather armor beneath a hooded cloak.

Twin daggers rested against her hips.

Not a single movement betrayed her presence.

She lowered the crystal.

"So..."

"The rumors were true."

Her silver eyes narrowed.

"The Monster Queen really exists."

Deep within the Kingdom of Valenor...

The royal court buzzed with nervous conversation.

Maps covered a massive oak table.

Every noble seemed to speak at once.

"A monster kingdom cannot be tolerated!"

"They defeated Rhazakar!"

"They're gathering allies!"

King Aldric raised one hand.

The room fell silent.

He looked toward Rowan's empty chair.

"He has served as our observer."

"He reports that monsters and humans now trade openly."

Several nobles scoffed.

"Impossible."

"Monsters don't negotiate."

The king replied quietly.

"Perhaps..."

"We simply never gave them the chance."

Across the continent...

Within the Cathedral of Light...

The High Archbishop stood before rows of armored Inquisitors.

Each warrior wore polished white armor etched with golden runes.

Their swords glowed faintly.

"The Blood King has fallen."

His voice echoed through the cathedral.

"The creature calling herself Vespera has united races that should remain divided."

He slowly opened an ancient manuscript.

"For centuries..."

"The Church has protected humanity from the darkness."

He looked directly at his assembled warriors.

"That darkness now wears the face of a queen."

One Inquisitor stepped forward.

"When do we march?"

The Archbishop smiled.

"When the people beg us to."

Night settled over the Abyssal Domain.

Moonlight bathed the rooftops in silver.

Most of the city slept peacefully.

One figure did not.

The hooded woman slipped silently across the outer wall.

She moved like living shadow.

No guard noticed.

No dog barked.

No floorboard creaked.

Her footsteps made no sound.

She reached the Sanctuary Core.

Its violet light illuminated the chamber.

"So..."

"This is what everyone's fighting over."

She circled it carefully.

No greed touched her face.

Only curiosity.

Then...

A calm voice echoed behind her.

"Admiring my home?"

The assassin froze.

She hadn't sensed anyone.

She slowly turned.

Vespera stood in the doorway.

Still in her human form.

Wearing a simple black dress instead of armor.

No weapon.

No fear.

Only quiet confidence.

The assassin smiled beneath her hood.

"Interesting."

"I pride myself on never being seen."

Vespera tilted her head.

"You weren't."

"I heard you breathing."

For the first time in years...

The assassin laughed.

"A fair answer."

The two women studied one another in silence.

The assassin finally spoke.

"My name doesn't matter."

"It will."

Vespera replied.

"If we're going to talk."

The woman slowly removed her hood.

Long midnight-black hair fell over one shoulder.

Her silver eyes reflected the Core's light.

"My name..."

"...is Nyxara."

The System immediately reacted.

Vespera read the notification without changing her expression.

"You crossed half the continent."

"You slipped through every guard."

"You stood before my Sanctuary Core."

She folded her arms.

"So..."

"Why are you really here?"

Nyxara's smile disappeared.

She reached into her cloak.

Lirael, Kragga, Sylvana, and Kaelyra burst into the chamber from four different entrances.

Weapons drawn.

The atmosphere became razor sharp.

Nyxara slowly withdrew...

A folded parchment.

Not a dagger.

She tossed it toward Vespera.

"You should read that."

Vespera opened it.

The wax seal bore the emblem of the Cathedral of Light.

Inside, only a single sentence had been written.

Kill the Monster Queen before she becomes impossible to stop.

Silence filled the chamber.

Nyxara leaned casually against a pillar.

"They hired me."

Kragga tightened her grip on her axe.

"Then why the hell are you still breathing?"

Nyxara's silver eyes met Vespera's.

A faint smile returned.

"Because..."

"I haven't decided whether I want to kill her..."

"...or work for her."

The room fell deathly silent.
