Chapter 36: The Fracture Opens In 24 Hours And My Soul Might Not Survive What I Have To Do To Close It?!

Joan’s containment barrier was at sixty-eight percent and falling because the Council auditor’s classification equipment ran on the same spectral band.

Joan had asked her to shut it down.

The auditor had paperwork that said no.

"Move," Soren said.

Selah went first into the Tier-3 shaft.

Frost spread from her boots across each handhold, giving them grip.

Maren went second, her body heat drying the rungs as she passed.

Yara dropped straight into the dark without bothering with the ladder.

Soren climbed down after Maren.

Behind him, a fourth set of boots hit the first rung, and when he glanced up he saw Lior Vasquez Jr. climbing after them.

"You’re not invited," Soren said without looking up again.

"The auditor wants independent verification of the Tier-3 readings."

Lior’s Crowned Lion dropped past all of them, landing at the bottom hard enough to crack the stone.

"Your data doesn’t match the Council baseline, I’m here to find out why."

"You’re here because your family’s numbers are wrong and you need to bury it before the auditor figures that out."

Lior went into shock.

The Tier-3 was different now.

What had been stone corridors was something organic, dark tissue stretched over the walls, pulsing on a rhythm Soren could feel through his boots.

The First Shadow’s crystal was gone, shattered, the entity distributed through the dungeon’s structure.

Feeding the Fracture Seed from everywhere at once.

Corridors rearranged every few minutes.

Selah froze paths open.

Maren burned through walls when the frozen paths collapsed.

Yara walked through shadows between corridors without touching any surface at all.

"Has she always done that?" Lior said, watching Yara step out of a wall.

"Done what?" Soren kept walking.

Twenty minutes in, the dungeon separated Lior from his lion.

The corridor collapsed between them, organic tissue closing over the gap in seconds.

Lior’s fist hit the wall. His lion roared from the other side, muffled and getting quieter.

"Kane."

Soren looked at Maren.

He could leave Lior down here.

Let him find his own way back. The auditor would note his absence but that was Lior’s problem.

"Maren!"

She burned the wall open in four seconds.

The lion came through trailing smoke, mane singed, pressing against Lior’s legs so hard it almost knocked him over.

Lior looked at Soren.

"You die down here, the auditor blames me," Soren said. "Keep up or go back."

They reached the Fracture Seed chamber at the forty-minute mark.

The crack was two feet wide. Through it, Soren could see something that didn’t belong in any world.

"I need everything," Soren said. "Shadow, ice, fire. All three through me."

Selah’s hand found his left arm.

Her frost crawled up past his elbow, settling against bare skin where his sleeve had torn during the descent. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

Maren’s tail wrapped around his right forearm.

Heat bloomed where her skin met his, so strong that steam rose where Selah’s frost bordered it.

She pressed closer, her hip against his, steadying him.

Yara stepped behind him.

Her hands went to his shoulders.

Her body pressed flat against his back and the shadow that poured off her soaked through his jacket into his bones.

All three bonds running through one heart.

He opened the Primordial Heart and pulled.

[DING! — Triple bond channel initiated. Shadow/Ice/Fire convergence through Primordial Tamer’s Heart. Soul integrity dropping.]

Joan’s voice on comms. "Kane, you just hit 45%."

"I know."

"My override expires in two hours."

"I know."

42%.

The Fracture Seed shuddered and the crack narrowed by an inch.

38%.

Selah was shaking against his left side. Her frost was running so deep it burned where it touched, but she held on.

She wasn’t pulling back.

35%.

Joan again. "You hit my line, Kane. I can’t justify..."

"Then don’t justify it. Just watch."

The crack closed. The seal formed, dark crystal growing over the gap. Shadow, ice, fire fused together into something the system couldn’t classify.

[DING! — Fracture Seed: TEMPORARILY SEALED. Duration: 14 days. The seal is not permanent. Prepare accordingly.]

Soren’s legs went out.

His vision greyed at the edges, his body temperature dropping fast, fingers going numb.

Maren caught him before he went flat. Her tail wrapped around his torso, pulling him against her core.

She was burning hot, her whole body pushing warmth into his chest, his arms, everywhere her skin touched his.

His face ended up against her collarbone, her pulse in his ear, fast.

Selah dropped beside him.

Her frost shifted delicate, running across his forehead and down his throat. Temperature regulation.

She was keeping his brain from cooking while Maren kept his body from shutting down. Her fingers were on his temples, tracing slow circles through his hair.

Yara knelt on his other side, still in half-form, shadows leaking off her body. Her hand pressed flat over his heart.

[DING! — Soul integrity: 35%. CRITICAL. Tamer body functions compromised. Immediate stabilization required.]

Lior was standing fifteen feet back.

His lion was pressed against his legs, but Lior was watching the three girls holding Soren on the floor with an expression Soren couldn’t read and didn’t care about.

Joan’s override timer expired while they were underground.

The auto-report generated.

Every bond reading.

Every soul measurement.

Every classified interaction from the past month. Packaged for three Bureau offices.

Then Joan’s voice came through comms. Quiet enough that only Soren heard it.

"I deleted the file, Kane. The handwritten one, it was the only copy." She was quiet for a second. "Win this then we’re even."

[DING! — Joan Sawyer’s monitoring data: PURGED. Bureau file: DESTROYED. Alliance status: DEBT CLEARED.]

Soren closed his eyes.

Maren’s heartbeat was in his ear. Selah’s frost traced his temple. Yara’s palm was warm over his chest, which shouldn’t have been possible for a shadow-type, but it was.

Then the system pinged again.

[DING! — Soul integrity: 35%. CRITICAL. Rate of degradation: 0.5% per day from ambient bond friction. Time to fatal threshold (15%): 40 days. Stabilization method available. Displaying...]

[DING! — BOND RECALIBRATION required. Target bond: Yara Hale (highest index, 55/75). Process: full soul-frequency alignment. Requirements: physical proximity (minimum distance: zero), mutual vulnerability. Duration: 6 hours. WARNING: cannot be interrupted once initiated. WARNING: requires complete suppression of bonded entity’s defensive aura. WARNING: classified as INTIMATE BOND EVENT under Bureau Code 77-C.]

Soren read it.

Through the bond, Yara read it too.

Neither of them said a word.

But Maren’s tail tightened around his torso. Selah’s frost stopped moving on his skin.

They’d both seen it and knew what it meant.
