Shin left the 1st Division's barracks and returned to his own in the 2nd Division.

"Good, you're both here. I have something to tell you," Shin said, seeing Soi Fon and Yoruichi together.

"What is it? Soi Fon mentioned you went to see the old man. What were you doing in the 1st Division?" Yoruichi asked, her eyes alight with the intense curiosity she was known for.

"That's what I came to talk about. I'm planning to step down as Captain of the 2nd Division, so I went to tell Old Man Yamamoto," Shin explained.

"You're resigning as captain? If you step down, who's going to take your place?" Yoruichi asked, her tone suddenly urgent. "Wait a minute... you're not thinking of nominating me, are you? Let me be clear—I don't want the job."

Yoruichi held up her hands, preemptively refusing.

Shin shot her a sidelong glance and shook his head.

"You're overthinking it. You think I know you this well and would still make you captain? I may be stepping down, but I still have a responsibility to this squad."

The undisguised contempt in his voice made Yoruichi's expression darken. She glared at him, a dangerous glint in her eyes. If there had been a sword within arm's reach, she might have tried to cut him down right then and there.

"Don't worry, I'm not making you captain. I want Soi Fon to take over." Shin's gaze shifted to Soi Fon.

"Me? Captain? I don't think I'm suitable," Soi Fon said, shaking her head immediately. "Either Captain Shin or Lady Yoruichi would be a far better choice. I couldn't possibly..."

She refused, believing her own strength and status paled in comparison to theirs.

"Soi Fon as captain... That's not a bad idea," Yoruichi said, nodding in agreement. It made perfect sense. Soi Fon was already doing all the work of a captain anyway, handling every minor and major issue in the 2nd Division.

"No, I am not fit to be a captain," Soi Fon insisted, refusing again.

"Don't turn it down. If you do, how am I supposed to get out of this?" Shin said, patting her on the shoulder. Besides, she was the perfect choice. In the original timeline, Soi Fon was the Captain of the 2nd Division. She was already handling all the responsibilities, and her strength was more than a match for any of the other captains. There was no one better suited for the role.

"I think you should just accept it, Soi Fon. Honestly, this slacker was never cut out to be a captain in the first place."

Yoruichi shot a pointed look at Shin. A guy who did absolutely nothing? He was the last person who should be leading a squad.

After a bit more persuasion from both Shin and Yoruichi, Soi Fon finally agreed.

"Then come with me to see the old man. You'll be the new Captain of the 2nd Division. I have high hopes for you," Shin said with a smile.

Soi Fon was still in a daze. It felt like she had just stumbled into the position of captain, and she wasn't quite sure how it had all happened.

"By the way, if Soi Fon is the captain, what about you?" Yoruichi asked Shin. "You're not planning on transferring to the 4th Division, are you?"

Yoruichi's expression suddenly changed. If Shin was planning to go to the 4th Division, she would have to stop him at all costs.

"You're letting your imagination run wild. I'll just be a regular squad member for now. It's much more relaxing." Shin smiled.

He had no intention of leaving the 2nd Division. As an unseated officer, he wouldn't have any responsibilities. It wasn't like Soi Fon would dare give him any orders.

Hearing that he wasn't leaving, Yoruichi breathed a sigh of relief. That was acceptable. She had been afraid he would leave the 2nd Division entirely. If he had tried, she would have done everything in her power to stop him, even forcing him to remain captain.

"Let's go, Soi Fon. Come with me to the 1st Division."

To avoid any complications, Shin immediately took Soi Fon to see Yamamoto and explain the situation.

Seeing how quickly Shin was moving, Yamamoto knew he was serious about resigning.

"It seems you've made up your mind. In that case, I won't force you to stay."

Yamamoto understood Shin's personality well enough to know that forcing the issue would be pointless. Once Shin had decided on something, he wouldn't change his mind. It was better to just agree.

"Captain Soi Fon, I trust you will lead the 2nd Division well in the future," Yamamoto said, addressing Soi Fon.

"I will not betray the trust Captain Shin has placed in me," Soi Fon replied, her expression serious and determined.

She was a captain now, and she would bear the responsibility that came with the title. This was the position Shin had given her—for his sake, if not for the squad's, she would not allow herself to fail.

"I will announce the change in leadership to the other captains in due time. From now on, you are the Captain of the 2nd Division."

Yamamoto's authority was absolute in the Gotei 13. He didn't need to consult Central 46 for a change in squad command.

"Whew, it feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders," Shin said, stretching.

"Captain Shin, did you really see the position of captain as a burden?" Soi Fon couldn't understand him. Everyone else schemed and fought to become a captain, yet he was so eager to give it up.

"If you're a captain long enough, you'll probably feel the same way I do," Shin told her. In truth, Shin was one of the longest-serving captains in the Seireitei.

Returning to the squad barracks, Shin could finally slack off openly. Well, he had been slacking off openly when he was captain, too.

"I want to resign as Lieutenant," Yoruichi suddenly announced.

"Why?" Shin glanced at her.

"No reason, I just feel like it. Is that a problem?"

"Not for me, but it's not up to me. You'll have to ask the Shihōin Clan and Old Man Yamamoto if they'll let you."

Shin shrugged.

"I'm the head of the Shihōin Clan now. As for Yamamoto... as long as he doesn't make things difficult, he should agree, right?" Yoruichi said, though she didn't sound very confident.

If Yamamoto refused, there was nothing she could do. And the Shihōin Clan wanted her to remain a lieutenant—or better yet, become a captain. For the head of a great noble family to be a mere lieutenant was, in their eyes, a bit of a disgrace.
