Online Game: I Turn Monsters Into Food 10,000x Buffs
Chapter 27: The Nine-Tail Tasting Menu
The Matriarch came down from her float with the energy of a thing done talking, three tails slamming into the frozen ground where the party had been standing. The earth split in a spray of dirt and violet fire that lit the clearing in shades of purple and wrong.
"Mirra, don’t let her channel the mist." Liam was already moving. "Rogue, stop looking at her tails and start hitting them."
"I’m multitasking," Rogue said, from somewhere in the shadows.
Mirra planted her staff, channelling the Rage of the Awakened buff that was apparently what happened when a forty-year-old woman got her one good dream interrupted, and Glacial Spike sent thick jagged pillars of ice erupting from the frozen mud toward the Matriarch’s underside. The fox twisted in mid-air with the impossible grace of something that had been doing this for centuries, violet fire incinerating the ice before it touched her fur, but the half-second of distraction was enough.
"Elizabeth, now."
Elizabeth came off a toppled birch trunk like a pink and gold blur, the Gale-Sliver Rapier catching the foxfire light as she launched off the wood and drove the blade into the Matriarch’s exposed flank with the full momentum of someone who had been waiting for exactly this gap.
[Piercing Rose — Critical. 1,240 damage.]
The Matriarch shrieked, and a tail came around like a redwood in a hurricane, aimed directly at Elizabeth, still in the air with nowhere to go.
Liam was already there "Not on my watch," Liam rumbled.
He didn’t run across the shattered ground so much as he arrived at the relevant point in space, Weightless Forge converting five hundred pounds of platinum into something that moved like a thought, and the Basalt Shield came up, and the tail hit it with a sound like two mountains having a disagreement. The ground under his boots cratered ten feet in every direction. His silver hair moved in the shockwave. He didn’t.
"My turn," he said.
The Vulcan Gauntlet came up to temperature, the gold filigree along his armour running liquid, and he grabbed the tail, the exact tail that had just tried to remove Elizabeth from the situation, and held it. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
[Hearth-Grip activated. 500% heat damage to the gripped target. Target cannot Blink while held.]
The Matriarch’s fur started smoking. Her violet eyes went wide with the specific panic of something that had never been unable to retreat before and was discovering it now, the God of the Kitchen’s grip on her tail functioning as a problem she had no prepared solution for.
"Rogue," Liam said, "if you can’t hit a target this size, go back to the rabbit toads."
Liam reached into his inventory with his free hand, the hand not currently holding a screaming nine-tailed fox boss by the tail and tossed a Honeyed Restoration Biscuit at Elizabeth without looking.
It hit her in the chest.
"Did you just throw a cookie at me during a boss fight?"
"Eat it. Your left arm is slow."
Her mouth opened. Closed. She bit into the biscuit. The bruise faded by the second bite, and she looked at him like he’d done a thing she couldn’t categorise, her pink ears pressed flat.
"Watch the master," Rogue’s voice came from everywhere at once, because he was in the Matriarch’s own shadow, stepping through it with the Shadow-Stalker Coffee still running hot in his system, and he came out behind her head with both daggers lit, toxic green and went to work.
Forty strikes in two seconds. The kind of number that looked wrong written down and looked worse in person, glowing green gashes across the boss’s neck while she was pinned and burning and unable to blink away from any of it.
The Matriarch made a decision. The violet mist came back, but this time it wasn’t trying to show anyone a nice dream. It came down as weight, a Gravity Well compressing the air in the clearing into something that pressed on the chest and bent the knees of everyone in it.
"She’s desperate," Mirra said, already casting, Blizzard Veil erupting around the party in a dome of snow that pushed the mist back and neutralised the foxfire and gave everyone present approximately three more seconds of not being crushed into the dirt.
Liam let go of the tail. Drew the greatsword. The weight of the Gravity Well was there but the Rage of the Awakened was louder, the hyper-clarity of a man who had been lied to and had not enjoyed the experience.
The air around him warped. Roasted chestnuts and woodsmoke rolled outward from him in a wave that drowned the jasmine-rot smell of the boss, and the Hearth in his chest pulled up to something that was not quite a skill and not quite a recipe and was exactly what it needed to be.
"This is the end of the line, Matriarch," Liam growled. "You’ve got a rare drop I need."
Liam swung the greatsword in a wide, horizontal arc. It wasn’t just a physical strike; the blade left a trail of white-hot celestial fire in its wake. The flame took the shape of a massive, spectral oven, closing around the Kitsune Matriarch. The boss didn’t even have time to shriek. The white fire incinerated her violet aura, her nine tails, and her pride in a single, blinding flash of light.
[BOSS DEFEATED: Kitsune Matriarch — Rare Spawn.]
[EXP Gained: 45,000.]
[Level Up: Liam 24 to 26. Elizabeth, 19 to 21. Mirra 17 to 19. Rogue 18 to 20.]
The clearing settled. Where a Level 30 Rare Spawn had been floating thirty seconds ago, there was a pile of shimmering loot and beautifully roasted tail that looked suspiciously like a giant, golden-brown chicken drumstick.
Rogue sat down in the dirt and breathed for a moment. "I need a nap," he said. "And more of that coffee."
"Check the drops first," Liam said, already crouching over the tail, turning it in his hands, running the flavour profile. Toasted honey. Wild game. Something underneath that was older and stranger and was going to need a very specific preparation to bring out properly.
Rogue scrambled into the loot pile with the energy of someone who had just remembered he had a purpose. "Mirage Silk," he announced, holding up shimmering bundles. "Ten gold a yard minimum. I can finally get the stealth cloak." He dug deeper. "Wait. Liam. What’s this?"
It wasn’t a question. His voice had changed register.
Liam looked up from the tail.
Rogue was holding something small and dark that pulsed with the same bruised violet as the Matriarch’s eyes, and the notification that appeared above it was not the colour of normal loot.
[Hidden Item Detected: The Matriarch’s Mirror.]
[Classification: Unique. One exists.]
[Effect: Unknown.]
[Note: This item has been waiting here since launch day. Nobody has found it before you.]
The forest was very quiet.
[TOOL TIP: THE "CHEF’S KISS" FINISHER]
Status: Boss Deleted / Rare Loot Secured.
The "Cookie" Strategy: Liam tossed a Honeyed Restoration Biscuit at Elizabeth mid-fight to fix her "slow arm," proving that in his party, healthcare is edible and mandatory.
Tactical Physics: Liam used Weightless Forge to move like a thought, then pivoted to Hearth-Grip to hold a Level 30 boss by the tail, effectively turning a teleporting spirit into a stationary space heater.
The Rage Buff: Mirra utilised Rage of the Awakened, a specific buff fueled by the sheer audacity of a boss trying to give a tired mom a "nice dream" right before her morning coffee.
