While Lin Family Village was bustling, Sun’s courtyard was lively too.

Yuan Chun took a day off from the factory and went to the police station to report the case. Soon, two police officers came to her house to investigate.

Yuan Chun said, "Officers, my courtyard wall is built high, it’s impossible for a thief to climb over. Moreover, there’s no sign of tampering on my courtyard gate and the house door locks. Last night, when I returned from the movies with friends, the locks were intact, but the lock on the box inside was pried open. I suspect the thieves used a key to get into my house."

The officers inspected the courtyard, yet found no footprints or signs of climbing inside or outside the yard.

No clues were left on the door, but inside the house, all cabinet doors were open and clothes were scattered messily. The locks on the two boxes were broken, evidently forced open.

"Yuan Chun girl, why didn’t you go to work today? Why are the officers here? Yuan Chun, did something happen at your place?"

At this moment, a neighbor, Aunt Li, entered the courtyard, curiously eyeing the officers.

Yuan Chun said with a bitter smile, "Aunt Li, last night, my friends and I went to see a movie and found out my house had been burglarized. The locks on my boxes were pried open."

"Nothing much, just the lock on the box was pried open. I hid my valuables well, the thief couldn’t find them."

Aunt Li was relieved for her.

Suddenly, she recalled, "Yuan Chun, did you say you went to see a movie last night? I remember shortly after I finished dinner, there was noise from your place. I thought you were moving things. Uncle Li even called out to you, asking if you needed help, and you replied you didn’t. Yuan Chun, what time did you return home last night?"

"Ten o’clock. I remember clearly, the movie ended at nine thirty. Xiao Lei and I had roasted sweet potatoes then returned home, around ten."

"Oh dear, then the noise was from the thief." Aunt Li slapped her thigh regretfully, "If only we’d known it was a thief, we wouldn’t have let them get away."

"Aunt Li, it’s not your fault. You didn’t expect the thief would be so bold to enter so early and impersonate my voice. However, the keys to my door... only Lin Baoshan had them. After the divorce, I took back that set, but I’m not sure if he had a backup. Officers, could you go and ask Lin Baoshan?"

"Lin Baoshan?" The officers became serious, "Is he your ex-husband? When did you get divorced?"

Before Yuan Chun could speak, Aunt Li spoke quickly about Lin Baoshan’s betrayal.

"Officers, Lin Baoshan is a heartless scoundrel. After marrying Yuan Chun, he handed his salary to his mother and spent Yuan Chun’s money. Even for his affair’s expenses, he would ask Yuan Chun for money, shamelessly. You must look into it."

Later, the officers further questioned the nearby residents.
