Reincarnated as a Goblin: My 'Sword' is Malfunctioning!!
Chapter 62: The Dual Ascension (Part 2)
Chapter 62: The Dual Ascension (Part 2)
The silence in the room was incredibly heavy as it pressed against my eardrums like a physical weight. The air was already cold.
’I hope this goes well. I am more nervous than these two.’ I prayed.
I walked toward the center of the reinforced room. Nyssa and Kaelith followed closely behind me. They had already shed their clothing, leaving the fabric piled neatly in the corner to allow their physical forms to expand without any restriction.
"Alright! Get ready!"
I sat down cross-legged on the cold metal. The dim, magical lighting of the basement cast long, flickering shadows across their pale and dark skin.
Nyssa was shivering slightly. Though, she wasn’t shivering because of Cold.
She was shivering in Excitement. The Excitement of Evolving into a New and Better Form.
Kaelith, on the other hand, stayed true to her nature. She stood perfectly still. Her posture was radiating the lethal grace of a predator waiting to be unleashed.
"Evolution is close to Rebirth. You both will be born anew."
’This is it,’ I thought, taking a deep, steadying breath.
’If my core fails to anchor them during the critical phase, this entire estate will be leveled, and we will be vaporized instantly.’
I gestured for them to take their places. They sat facing each other.
I was left just enough space to position myself directly between them.
I reached out with both hands.
My hand gently clasped Nyssa’s trembling fingers. Her skin was incredibly warm, almost feverish with pent-up mana.
I extended my heavy, brass-plated Vanguard Arm to the left. The cool metal fingers locked securely with Kaelith’s firm, calloused grip.
The assassin squeezed the mechanical digits, her silver eyes locking onto mine with absolute, unwavering resolve.
"Focus only on my pulse," I murmured, making sure my baritone voice was the only thing they concentrated on.
"The pain will try to break your mind before it breaks your body. Do not fight the agony. You have to let the old cells burn away so the new ones can take root."
Nyssa swallowed hard and nodded in understanding.
"I am anchoring my cognitive functions to your bio-signature, Grik. I am ready."
Kaelith offered a dark, fearless smile. "Just do not let me go, boss."
I closed my eyes and connected deeply with the Sovereign’s Conduit. The Pack Link flared to life in my mind.
It was a brilliant golden tether that bound our three cores together in a flawless, unbreakable triangle.
I could feel their immense, bottled-up energy pressing against the edges of their biology.
’System,’ I commanded internally, focusing every ounce of my willpower.
’Initiate Stage Two Evolution for linked targets Nyssa and Kaelith. Use my C-Grade core as the primary catalyst to break their bottlenecks.’
[Command Accepted. Initiating Apex Ascension for linked targets.]
[Warning: Catastrophic mana rejection imminent. Host must absorb excess thermal and necrotic feedback to ensure target survival. Extreme tissue damage highly probable.]
The reaction was not gradual in the slightest.
It was instantaneous and overwhelmingly violent. The air in the foundry did not just heat up; it literally ignited.
A blinding and chaotic storm of emerald energy erupted from Nyssa’s side of the room.
It felt as if a miniature sun had been born right next to my right shoulder.
’Concentrate! This is pretty hot!’
The sheer density of her arcane power began to rewrite the very foundation her body was built on.
Small, loose metal scraps on the floor disintegrated due to pure green mana.
Simultaneously, the temperature on my left plummeted to absolute zero.
Kaelith’s core detonated, unleashing a suffocating, freezing vortex of pure, unadulterated darkness.
’Damn! I might lose my Arm again!’
The shadows in the room actively ripped themselves away from the lead-lined walls, swirling around her in a violent, hungry hurricane.
It felt like the manifestation of the Abyss itself. It was swallowing the surrounding light itself.
"AAAAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!" Nyssa screamed.
The scream contained enormous pain. Her usual academic dignity was nowhere to be seen.
Her spine arched forcefully backward, her jaw clenching as the emerald mana physically ripped her biological pathways apart.
The magic was widening her internal channels by brute force to accommodate a limitless flow of energy.
’Hold on, Nyssa. Please hold on,’ I prayed silently, tightening my grip on her hand as her knuckles turned stark white.
She was being broken down to her very atoms.
On my left, Kaelith did not scream. She was a weapon who was trained to hide her pain.
She was trained to never show weakness. She was trained to become strong.
But...
But the agony was undeniably tearing her apart.
She bit her lower lip so hard that dark crimson blood began to trickle down her chin, staining her flawless skin.
Her muscles seized and spasmed violently, her dark skin shifting and vibrating as the shadow-vortex actively peeled away her mortal limitations.
BOOOOM!!!
The conflicting energies crashed together in the center of the room.
’The raw, burning heat of the Aetherion magic is mixing fatally with the freezing, necrotic bite of the Noctharion shadows.’
It was a chaotic storm of opposing forces, and I was the only thing standing between them and mutual annihilation.
My Core screamed in protest.
’It feels like I am swallowing shattered glass and molten lava at the exact same time.’
The Pack Link was forcing my body to process their biological waste energy.
’If I let go of their hands for even a fraction of a second, their bodies will burst into shreds, killing them instantly.’
I gritted my teeth until I tasted the sharp tang of copper. Blood dripped from my own nose, but I refused to close my eyes.
"I AM YOUR LORD SOVEREIGN," I roared.
"I REFUSE TO YIELD EVEN A SINGLE INCH TO THE AGONY."
"I WILL CARRY THIS WEIGHT!"
"I WILL NOT LET YOU YOU FALL!"
I engaged the Neural-Steam Integration Link to its absolute maximum limit. I had no other choice.
I forced the catastrophic, conflicting mana straight down through my nervous system and into my mechanical Vanguard Arm.
The heavy brass plates began to glow a terrifying, cherry red. The smell of my own burning skin filled my nostrils, but I locked my jaw and held on.
"UUURRGGHH!!"
I poured every ounce of my Willpower into the tether, serving as the unbreakable pillar for my pack while they burned and rebuilt themselves from the ashes.
Swoosh
Then, just as suddenly as the storm had begun, the violent pressure collapsed.
The blinding emerald light and the swirling, abyssal shadows sucked rapidly back into their respective hosts. The sudden absence of noise left a ringing echo in my ears.
"Haah! Haah! Haah!"
I slumped forward. My lungs were burning as I gasped for some good air.
My Vanguard Arm was completely scorched. The once-polished brass was blackened and hissing weakly.
But the internal mechanisms were somehow miraculously intact.
’Thank God! Thank the fucking God!’
Slowly, painfully, I raised my head to look at my pack.
The two women sitting before me were no longer the hunted fugitives I had escaped the Zenith Academy with.
They had been completely and fundamentally reborn. The air around them practically hummed with an undeniable, apex authority.
’I cannot believe a single Evolution can do such Miracles. Well, I was a miracle myself.’
Nyssa was the first to open her eyes. I held my breath as I looked at her.
Her bright emerald green irises were the most defining trait of her Evolved Beauty.
She had grown slightly taller. Her limbs were leaner and were vibrating with an intrinsic, terrifying grace.
The faint, olive tone of her skin now possessed an almost pearlescent, luminous quality.
A beautiful, glowing arcane circuit, similar to my own dark tattoos, traced a delicate path down her collarbone and disappeared over the swell of her breast.
’She looks like a goddess of pure logic and wisdom,’ I thought, utterly mesmerized by the sheer perfection of her new form.
Kaelith stirred a moment later. She pushed herself up off the scorched steel floor, and the lingering shadows in the room instinctively bent toward her, treating her as their absolute master.
Her twilight-colored skin had deepened to a flawless, absorbing midnight hue.
Her silver hair was longer. They flowed down her back like a river of liquid moonlight.
But the most striking change was her eyes. The silver irises had expanded, surrounded by sclera that were completely pitch black. She had become the Embodiment of the Dark herself.
I forced my tired mind to focus, calling up their new status panels through the Pack Link. The golden interfaces materialized seamlessly in the air above them.

"Grik," Nyssa whispered. Her voice was smoother now, echoing with a faint, melodic duality that commanded absolute attention. She looked down at her glowing hands in pure awe.
"The complex equations are completely gone. I do not need to calculate the mana streams anymore. I can just feel the fabric of reality bending to my will."
Kaelith stood up effortlessly, her movements devoid of any mortal friction. She took a single step, and her form flickered, teleporting three feet forward without disturbing a single particle of dust on the floor. A dark, feral smile spread across her flawless face.
"The harsh light does not sting my eyes anymore," the assassin noted, turning her terrifying, beautiful gaze upon me.
"Everything is just a canvas of varying shades now. I feel completely unbound."
Her black-and-silver eyes dropped to my left side. The fierce smile vanished instantly, replaced by a look of intense, protective panic.
"Grik, your arm," Kaelith gasped, closing the distance between us in a heartbeat. Nyssa snapped out of her reverie and rushed to my other side, her glowing eyes filled with horror.
They knelt beside me, examining the scorched, warped brass and the blistered, burned flesh where the metal bolted into my shoulder. The terrible cost of anchoring their evolution was proudly displayed on my body.
"You absorbed the entire kinetic backlash," Nyssa realized, her voice trembling as she carefully hovered her glowing hands over my burns.
Cool, soothing Aether-magic flowed from her palms, instantly numbing the agonizing pain.
"You used your integration link as an exhaust pipe to save us from detonating. You could have melted your own core doing this!"
"A sovereign protects his pack," I grunted, forcing myself to stand up. My muscles screamed in protest, but a triumphant, predatory grin split my face. I looked down at the two incredibly deadly, gorgeous Apex Variants standing by my side.
We had survived the ultimate crucible. My pack was now composed entirely of C-Grade monsters.
I reached out and placed my hand on Nyssa’s cheek and my cooled brass fingers on Kaelith’s shoulder. They both leaned into my touch.
"The burns will heal, and Master Brakka can easily hammer out the dents in this plating," I assured them.
"What matters is that we are finally ready."
Kaelith’s dark eyes narrowed with lethal intent. "Ready to hunt down the Cult of the Ashen Maw?"
"Ready to hunt all of them," I corrected, picking up my discarded coat from the floor.
"Get dressed, both of you. We have an underground sanctum to locate, a cult to eradicate, and a very long message to send to Valerius Thorne. The Kingdom of Iron and Steam belongs to us now."
