Rich in the 70s: I Made a Rugged Veteran a Millionaire
Chapter 221: That Sounds Like Our Line
The quietly falling snow silently covered everything, devouring the vast expanse of land inch by inch.
It was eerily empty.
Inside the only tent glowing with firelight amidst the white snow.
"Two kings, beat that!"
"That’s not fair, I just played two threes, and you play two kings!"
"I don’t care, with good cards, I can show off like this!"
Jiang Cheng flicked her wrist, and the two kings slapped down onto the wooden board on the floor.
Opposite her, Director Lu "resentfully" sucked in his teeth.
"Don’t move!"
Director Lu gathered his resolve and with great force pulled four cards from his hand.
"Nobody move! Just two kings, huh? Who can’t beat that?"
"Four fives!"
Another slap, and four fives slammed onto the wooden board.
Master Li, Sister Lian, and the newcomer Gui Ying instinctively leaned back, careful not to get hit in the face.
Having thrown down his cards, Director Lu raised an eyebrow at Jiang Cheng, clenching his cards tightly as he asked, "So, what are you going to do? Want to play?"
Jiang Cheng leaned back, glanced at her cards, and said lightly yet defiantly, "I’ll let you win this one!"
Director Lu laughed heartily, swung his arm in a wide arc, and slammed another card down.
"A four!"
Everyone immediately turned to look at Director Lu.
A four???
What are you shouting about???
Director Lu had no shame and said, "What? Can’t beat a four? Then I’ll play another one!"
"Wait a moment!"
Sister Lian, still holding her cards, quickly threw one down, "I’ll play a six."
Seeing this, Master Li hurriedly tossed out a nine.
Gui Ying threw down a ten, and then it was back to Jiang Cheng.
Jiang Cheng hummed twice, tossed her head, and said, "The numbers are too small; I don’t care to beat that."
Sister Lian and the others held back their laughter, looking at Director Lu, who proudly said, "If Jiang Cheng doesn’t want it, neither do I."
Well, it seems neither of them had big cards!
In the end, Sister Lian, Master Li, and Gui Ying finished their cards, leaving only Jiang Cheng and Director Lu.
It was Jiang Cheng’s turn to play.
Jiang Cheng finally drew out her last card, warm and hot from her grasp.
With a slap, it hit the board.
"A three!"
"Hahahahahahahahaha!"
"Hahahahaha, I can’t take it, that’s hilarious!"
Sister Lian and Master Li laughed heartily, and Gui Ying, who wasn’t familiar, covered her mouth to chuckle.
Everyone’s gaze was on Director Lu.
Director Lu shook his head, saying, "Timing isn’t right— a seven."
Jiang Cheng laughed too.
She was almost crying from laughter, looking at Director Lu, saying, "Director Lu, this is what they call ’the clashing crane and clam, both benefit the fisherman.’"
Director Lu nodded repeatedly, "I know— hey— looks like a car is coming!"
Director Lu sprung up, lifted the blanket serving as a temporary curtain, and walked outside to take a look, with the others following closely behind.
"There’s really a car!"
"How did they drive through such thick snow?"
"Get the torches and flashlights, make some light!"
A few people waved torches and flashlights, and the distant light points were seen by Gao Zhonghua inside the truck.
"They’re ahead!"
The anxiety that had been building up in Gao Zhonghua finally eased a little.
They had been driving for over an hour since they set out. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺
Under normal circumstances, they should have encountered returning vehicles by now, but they hadn’t.
The snow was falling heavier, and the temperature was dropping lower.
He feared something had happened to Jiang Cheng and the others.
The truck’s lights drew nearer and nearer, and Jiang Cheng and the others saw the full view of the truck.
"Wow? This is a good trick!"
Master Li stared at the stopped truck.
At this time, the truck had two metal plates tied to the front, raised slightly above the ground.
When the truck was moving, the accumulated snow on the road would be pushed to the side.
In essence, it was a simple version of a snowplow truck.
With a "thud," the truck doors swung open, and Gao Zhonghua and Brother Chen jumped out one after another, holding coats and thermos bottles in their arms.
"Sister-in-law!"
"Ma’am!"
In their hurry, they forgot to call her Mr. Jiang.
Jiang Cheng waved them off, unbothered, saying, "I’m fine, we were well prepared."
"But what about you guys? Aren’t you cold?"
Jiang Cheng pointed at the small tent behind her, "Come in quickly, warm up!"
Gao Zhonghua and Brother Chen were momentarily puzzled.
This... seemed like it was supposed to be their line?
But when they saw the tent in front of them, glowing with warm firelight, they were at a loss for words.
Since they didn’t know what to say, they decided to have a cup of brown sugar water first.
Everyone entered the tent, and Director Lu and the others made room with small stools.
Sister Lian and Gui Ying began serving brown sugar egg water and dumpling soup to the four.
That’s right, they had cooked some dumpling soup too.
According to Jiang Cheng, Shen Que was very likely to come to the rescue, so they prepared ahead of time.
Just like that, Gao Zhonghua and the others drank the steaming hot dumpling soup.
Seeing this, Director Lu said, "How about this, while you eat, we’ll move the things from our truck to yours."
"Once we have moved enough, we can leave."
"Let’s not waste time."
Master Li immediately nodded in agreement.
Gao Zhonghua and the others were eager to help, but Master Li stopped them, saying, "Keep eating; we’ve been eating for quite a while, I’m almost full, moving around will do me some good!"
"Yes, you eat first; finish and then help."
Gao Zhonghua and his group: Full?
This scenario was a little... bizarrely strange.
Director Lu and a few others put on cotton-padded jackets, wore gloves, and prepared to go out and move things.
"Wait a moment!"
Gao Zhonghua got up to stop them, saying, "Your truck’s broken, right? I brought plenty of spare parts; let’s see if we can fix it, otherwise, someone’ll have to stay behind to watch the truck."
Master Li was even happier upon hearing this; fixing it would be best.
Both Gao Zhonghua and the other two driver masters could repair the truck, and after some discussion, they knew they could fix it with the parts.
Just like that, Gao Zhonghua quickly finished his dumpling soup and went with Master Li to fix the truck.
Director Lu and Sister Lian held flashlights to help light the way for the two people.
Working together, they managed to repair the truck in a little over forty minutes.
The familiar humming sound came to life, and a group of people cheered and jumped in the snow.
Jiang Cheng was just as happy.
After the excitement, everyone began to dismantle the tents and pack their belongings.
Once things were mostly packed, Jiang Cheng handed roasted sweet potatoes to Gao Zhonghua and the others and offered them hot soup.
The truck that Gao Zhonghua and his group arrived in led the way, with Jiang Cheng’s group following behind.
The two trucks slowly moved forward into the dark snowy night.
Inside the leading truck, Gao Zhonghua held a roasted sweet potato, sipping egg soup, and looked unrealistically at Brother Chen beside him.
"Brother Chen, we did pick up Mr. Shen’s partner, Jiang Cheng, right?"
"Yes, she’s right behind us!"
Gao Zhonghua nodded, furrowing his brow, "I feel like the role I played wasn’t too significant."
Brother Chen took a sip of the hot egg soup, eyes filled with admiration, "Your Mr. Shen... has found an incredible partner!"
