Chapter 147: Chapter 147: Invitation To The Banquet

The breakfast concluded in a comfortable, heavy silence, broken only by the entry of a servant who bowed low to Yilan. "Madam, representatives from the City Lord have arrived seeking an audience."

Yilan’s posture shifted instantly, the regal air of the Matriarch returning to her as she smoothed her robes. "Very well. Escort them to the main hall. I shall join them shortly."

As the servant departed, Yilan led the way, with Shen Yu and Lixue following closely behind like her silent, formidable shadows. They entered the main hall to find an Elder of the Wu Clan, the City Lord’s own kin, seated in wait, a stone-faced attendant standing at his back.

The Elder rose to greet them, but as his eyes landed on Yilan, he froze. He didn’t just see a recovered woman, he felt the vibrant, oppressive pressure of a 5th-Stage Golden Core expert. The "Matriarch" he once knew was not only healed but significantly more powerful than before.

"I must offer my humblest congratulations to Matriarch Tang for such a miraculous recovery," the Elder said, bowing deeply to hide his shock. "And for your breakthrough. To see such vigor return is a blessing for the city."

He straightened, his expression turning solemn. "On behalf of the City Lord, I offer our deepest apologies for our failure to assist when the assassins struck your estate. To express his regret, the Lord has sent these gifts as a token of our goodwill."

He gestured to several ornate and herb chests being brought in, then produced a gold-leafed scroll.

"Furthermore, the City Lord requests your presence at a grand banquet tomorrow night. It is a celebration of your contributions to the city, specifically for purging the impurity caused by the Peng Clan’s tainted pills and for eliminating the demonic threat that was Peng Kai."

He handed the invitation to Yilan with both hands. "The Lord truly hopes you will grace us with your presence."

Yilan accepted the scroll, her fingers brushing the gold leaf. She glanced back at Shen Yu, who gave a nearly imperceptible nod, a predatory glint in his golden eyes.

"We shall attend," Yilan said, her voice cool and authoritative. "Tell the City Lord that we look forward to the evening."

The Elder smiled, a look of visible relief crossing his face. "It will be our honor. I shall take my leave now and trouble you no further."

He bowed once more, his eyes lingering briefly on Shen Yu, sensing a strange, inexplicable depth to the young man, before turning to exit the hall.

The Elder’s footsteps faded into the distance, leaving the main hall in a heavy, contemplative silence. Yilan looked down at the gold-leafed invitation in her hand.

Yilan turned to Shen Yu, her mask of cold, matriarchal dignity softening into a look of quiet reliance. "What do you think of this, Yu’er?"

Shen Yu took the invitation, his thumb tracing the gold-embossed seal with a slow, deliberate rhythm.

"On the surface, it’s a public apology for their lack of security, a way for the City Lord to save face after letting a demonic threat like Peng Kai fester right under his nose. But the real goal is reconnaissance."

"We produced a modified version of the Peng Clan’s complex pill with near-perfect efficacy, a feat that typically requires a Tier 4 Alchemist. They are desperate to know the identity of the master architecting our sudden rise."

Lixue stepped forward, her brow furrowed with concern. "So what will we say when they press us? They’ll want to know how a falling clan managed to reverse-engineer a guarded recipe in such a short window. They won’t just let it go."

A playful, sharp smile touched Shen Yu’s lips, one that didn’t quite reach his cold eyes. "Don’t worry about it," he said smoothly, his voice carrying a weight of absolute certainty. "I’ll handle the explanations. When the time comes, they’ll hear exactly what they need to believe."

He walked toward the center of the hall, his presence expanding until he seemed to dominate the vast space.

"Beyond the alchemy, they are wary of my reputation," he continued, his golden eyes narrowing.

"I’ve won the hearts of the common people, and the City Lord needs to gauge if this ’Golden Paragon of the Silver Moon’ is a pawn he can lead into his service or a threat he needs to eliminate before the masses start looking to me instead of his throne."

Yilan hummed in agreement, her gaze lingering on the broad shoulders of the man who had reshaped her destiny with such terrifying efficiency. Beneath her silk robes, she could feel the faint, rhythmic pulse of the Lotus Mark between her breasts, thrumming in primal resonance with his unwavering confidence.

"Well," Shen Yu said, his voice dropping to a low, predatory growl as he turned toward the exit. "We will find out exactly what he wants tomorrow. Until then, I will be preparing. I need to consolidate this power before I show them what true perfection looks like."

He paused at the threshold, a dark, amused smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. "And I think it’s time I acquired a secretary to handle... miscellaneous affairs."

Both women smiled, instantly understanding exactly who he intended to press into service. Though Yilan felt a flicker of possessiveness, not entirely thrilled at the prospect of another woman entering his orbit, though she didn’t voice a rejection.

With a final, lingering look at the two women who were now the twin anchors of his estate, he strode out of the hall. His footsteps, heavy with intent, did not lead him toward the quiet of his meditation chamber. Instead, he navigated the winding corridors toward the wing where Li Qiu and other Peng Clan members were given refuge.

The wife of his fallen enemy was no longer a person in his eyes, she was a resource to be refined. It was time to put on a show and ensure his "secretary" knew exactly what her duties entailed.
