Mael, the Red Circle enforcer, stood across from him, steam rising from the jagged cut across his shoulder. "You’re faster than you look, brat. But this isn’t enough to beat me."

Zion didn’t answer. His eyes sharpened, tracking every twitch in Mael’s muscles. The man was a brute, sure, but not without experience. Each swing had weight—measured, tested.

Mael cracked his neck and pulled out twin shock batons, twirling them with a grin. "Let’s turn up the voltage."

He charged.

Zion ducked the first swipe and leaned into the second, using the momentum to spin around and drive his knee into Mael’s ribs. The hit landed, but Mael barely flinched.

"Gonna need more than that!"

The shock baton slammed into Zion’s side.

White-hot pain exploded across his ribs. His vision blurred for a split second as he was flung across the alley and crashed into a dumpster.

"Zion!" Zero’s voice echoed in his ear, the system AI flickering into view.

Zion coughed and pulled himself up, wincing. "I’m fine," he muttered.

"You’re not. Your vitals are spiking. That last hit nearly fractured two ribs."

"I’ve had worse."

Mael approached slowly now, spinning the batons. "Still breathing? You hero kids are stubborn."

Zion smirked and flicked his wrist. A pulse of energy surged through his veins, activating the dormant nodes embedded in his arms. A faint glow lit up his forearms as metal gauntlets materialized—a gift from one of the S-tier tech relics he recovered months ago.

"Let’s go for round two," he said.

This time, it was Zion who lunged.

He feinted left and then launched upward with a heavy uppercut. The gauntlet-enhanced blow sent Mael stumbling back. Zion didn’t let up, throwing a flurry of punches. Sparks flew as gauntlet met baton.

Mael snarled and jammed both batons into the ground. An electric wave rippled out, disrupting the energy in Zion’s gauntlets and stunning him momentarily.

"Gotcha."

Mael grabbed him by the throat and lifted him up.

"Let’s see how much air you need."

Zion struggled, fists pounding on Mael’s arm to no effect.

"Zion! Activate Burst Mode!" Zero shouted.

"I can’t... system’s still recalibrating..."

But Zion wasn’t done.

With a growl, he kicked forward, both feet smashing into Mael’s chest. It wasn’t enough to break the hold, but it gave him just enough leverage to reach into his pocket and pull a capsule.

He slammed it into Mael’s forearm.

HISSSSSSS!

The pressure capsule exploded with compressed gas, forcing Mael to release him. Zion dropped and rolled, gasping for breath.

Mael was already recovering, but his right arm twitched unnaturally.

"Cheap tricks now, huh?!"

"Just resourceful," Zion coughed.

Then, a second figure dropped into the alley.

Yin.

She landed gracefully beside Zion, blades drawn, eyes calm.

"Need a hand?"

Zion nodded, wiping blood from his lip.

"Let’s finish this."

Together, they charged. Yin dashed to Mael’s left, Zion to his right. Their attacks were perfectly synchronized—Yin feinted with a flurry of slashes, forcing Mael to block, while Zion delivered a clean strike to the ribs.

"Double impact."

Zion activated his gauntlet’s kinetic pulse, and the stored energy released in a shockwave.

Mael was flung into the wall, body cracking through bricks before slumping down.

He didn’t get up.

Zion stood over him, panting. "Told you. I’m not done yet."

Yin looked around. "More are probably coming. We need to move."

Zion nodded, deactivating his gauntlets. "Let’s get out before the cleanup squad arrives."

As they sprinted into the shadows, Zero’s voice returned.

"That was reckless."

"Effective," Zion replied.

"Barely. Next time, plan more, bleed less."

Zion smirked. "That’s boring."

The night swallowed their figures as the city continued to burn in the distance.
