Chapter 13: A War With Monsters

The ground surrendered completely under the weight of over a hundred charging Tier 2 Spirit Beasts.

The sound was like a continuous rolling clap of thunder.

They exploded out of the necrotic treeline in a terrifying tidal wave of black fur, jagged stone scales and corrosive purple saliva.

They didn’t care about formations or tactics as they were driven by pure, ravenous hunger, sprinting directly toward the open Ironwood gates of Silas’s territory.

"Hold..." Silas muttered with his blue eyes tracking the distance with chilling precision.

Forty yards... Thirty yards... Twenty yards...

The twenty women of the Vanguard held their collective breath.

Brida, Hilda, Vanya, and the rest of the Shieldmaidens tightened their grips on their iron broadswords with their knuckles turning white under their leather gauntlets as they braced their splintering wooden shields.

Ten yards...

The front line of the frenzied horde hit the first perimeter of the trap zone.

"MAGES, NOW!" Silas roared.

Up on the heavy wooden scaffolding built into the palisade walls, Sybil, Oona, Ysolde, and Maeve thrust their iron-shod staves forward.

Channeling every drop of raw mana in their Level 1 bodies, four bright highly concentrated sparks of elemental fire shot from the tips of their foci, streaking through the dim morning air like miniature comets.

The sparks hit the pitch-flooded trenches perfectly.

FWOOM!

The ignition was instantaneous and catastrophic.

A massive, towering wall of roaring orange flames violently erupted from the earth, shooting twenty feet into the bruised-purple sky.

The intense blistering heat washed over the Vanguard forcing Silas to squint against the sudden updraft of scorching wind.

The trap didn’t just slow the horde down; it absolutely broke their momentum.

The leading line of massive Umbral Wolves and stone-scaled reptiles couldn’t stop their charge in time.

They crashed headfirst into the roaring firewall, tumbling violently into the deep trenches.

The sharpened oil-slicked wooden Ironwood spikes impaled them, driving deep into their soft underbellies, while the military-grade pitch clung to their fur and scales like napalm.

The monsters shrieked in absolute blood-curdling agony as they were cooked alive inside their own natural armor.

"Archers, loose!" Tamsin screamed from the frontline.

Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip!

A massive volley of iron-tipped arrows rained down from Fenna, Alys, Morwen, and the other archers stationed high on the walls.

The projectiles plunged directly into the flames, striking the burning trapped beasts.

Instantly, a cascade of blue holographic tabs began popping up over the girls’ heads, visible only to Silas’s Lord interface.

[Vassal Alys has leveled up! (Level 2)]

[Vassal Sybil has leveled up! (Level 2)]

[Vassal Oona has leveled up! (Level 2)]

"Keep firing!" Silas ordered, but his eyes narrowed.

The horde was simply too massive. Driven by feral madness, the monsters in the back didn’t stop.

They kept charging, using the burning, screaming bodies of their own packmates as literal bridges to cross the flaming trenches.

A massive, bone-plated wolf cleared the flames with its fur heavily singed and smoking as it landed heavily right in front of the Vanguard’s phalanx.

It let out a deafening roar, raising its massive claws.

"Hold the line!" Brida roared.

KRA-BANG!

The impact was sickening. The wolf slammed into the interlocking wall of wooden shields held by Brida, Hilda, and Vanya and the sheer physical force pushed the three Shieldmaidens back two full feet with their boots carving deep trenches into the stone courtyard.

Before the beast could snap its jaws, a blur of dark motion intercepted it.

Rowena, the new B-Rank Rune Weaver, stepped out from behind the Shieldmaidens.

Her eyes were glowing with a bright, ethereal blue light as she gripped her staff and swept the tip through the empty air.

A trail of glowing blue mana lingered behind the wood, instantly forming a complex sigil.

"Ignis..." Rowena whispered softly.

The rune detonated as a highly pressurized shockwave of searing arcane heat blasted the wolf point-blank in the chest, shattering its calcified bone plating and sending it tumbling backward into the dirt.

’Her casting speed is insane...’ Silas analyzed, thoroughly impressed by the B-Rank class.

Silas didn’t waste the opening as he tapped into his Mythic Gold Core.

A brilliant blinding aura of golden mana ignited around his body, violently pushing back the heat of the pitch fire.

He gripped the heavy leather hilt of his Tier 2 Umbral-Forged Mythril Blade and exploded forward, moving faster than the human eye could track.

He appeared directly above the stunned wolf. The Umbral Steel of his black blade actively absorbed the ambient dark mana of the Unknown Zone, turning the edge into a literal void that hungered for destruction.

"Die..." Silas commanded.

With a brutal, sweeping downward slash, Silas brought the golden-infused blade down.

The Tier 2 edge completely bypassed the beast’s natural defenses, cleaving cleanly through its thick neck and splitting its skull in half before burying itself deep into the earth.

[You have Leveled up to Level 3!]

"Push forward! Do not let them breach the gates!" Silas roared, ripping his blade from the dirt and spinning to meet the next wave of monsters pouring over the fire.

The battlefield descended into absolute brutal chaos. The trap had successfully neutralized the initial surge, but the sheer numbers meant the fight was devolving into a grueling bloody melee of attrition.

Silas moved like a golden reaper through the thick black smoke and falling ash.

The Vanguard operated with terrifying efficiency. Every time the Shieldmaidens pinned a beast, or the Archers hobbled a monster with a well-placed volley,

Silas or the Infantry girls were there to secure the kill.

The notifications in Silas’s peripheral vision were going absolutely crazy.

[Vassal Brida has leveled up! (Level 3)]

[Vassal Tamsin has leveled up! (Level 3)]

[Vassal Rowena has leveled up! (Level 2)]

But the physical toll of fighting over a hundred heavily armored Tier 2 Spirit Beasts was beginning to show.

CRACK!

"My shield!" Hilda yelled, gritting her teeth as a massive stone-scaled reptile slammed its heavy tail against her wooden kite shield.

The thick Ironwood completely splintered down the middle with the metal bands popping off under the force of attacks.

To her left, Vanya’s iron broadsword bounced off the skull of a corrupted bear, a massive chip flying off the cheap metal edge.

’The standard gear is reaching its limit...’ Silas thought, deflecting a massive claw strike from a wolf and kicking it backward into the dirt. He quickly glanced at his internal interface.

[Current Balance: 146 UP]

He had been rapidly accumulating Upgrade Points from the absolute slaughter. It was time to use them.

"Brida! Hilda! Hold your ground!" Silas roared, disengaging from his current target and sprinting toward the crumbling frontline.

He slid to a halt directly behind the Shieldmaidens just as another wave of wolves crashed against them.

Silas reached out, slamming his open palms directly onto the backs of Brida and Hilda’s splintering wooden shields.

’System! Upgrade!’ Silas commanded mentally.

[Upgrade System: Would you like to upgrade Tier 1 Wooden Kite Shields to Tier 2 Steel Aegis? Cost: 20 UP]

’Accept!’

A blinding pillar of golden light erupted right in the middle of the blood-soaked battlefield.

The magical pressure of the Absolute Upgrade System descending upon the physical realm caused the air to crackle and pop.

The Umbral Wolves pressing against the shields yelped, violently pushed back by the shockwave of displaced wind.

Before the girls’ very eyes, the splintered, rotting wood of their shields melted away like wax.

In less than a second, the material was fundamentally restructured, rapidly replaced by a hyper-dense gleaming silver-black alloy.

The new shields were thicker, perfectly contoured, and completely impervious to basic physical strikes.

"Gods above..." Brida gasped, feeling the immense, perfectly balanced weight of the Tier 2 Steel in her hand.

"Don’t just stare at it! Bash them!" Silas barked, moving down the line.

He touched Vanya’s chipped broadsword, triggering another burst of golden light.

[Upgrade System: Tier 1 Iron Broadsword upgraded to Tier 2 Blood-Iron Cleaver. Cost: 10 UP]

He pointed at the scaffolding above. ’System, range upgrade!’

[Upgrade System: Tier 1 Iron Bows upgraded to Tier 2 Magical Recurve Bows. Cost: 30 UP]

Up on the walls, Fenna, Alys, and Morwen gasped as their cheap wooden bows suddenly violently restructured into sleek, glowing weapons composed of dark enchanted timber and mythril strings.

When they pulled the strings back, arrows of pure condensed mana automatically formed.

"Holy shit!" Fenna screamed in pure delight. "Eat this, you ugly bastards!"

She loosed the mana arrow.

It tore through the air with a high-pitched shriek, slamming into a stone-scaled reptile and completely detonating upon impact, blowing a massive hole straight through its torso.

The morale boost was astronomical.

"FOR LORD GRAVES!" the Vanguard roared, completely intoxicated by the sudden surge of power.

With their upgraded Tier 2 gear, the Vanguard was no longer just holding the line; they were actively pushing the horde back.

The Shieldmaidens used their Steel to literally shatter the jaws of the wolves that charged them, while the Infantry stepped in with Blood-Iron Cleavers that sheared through bone plating like hot knives through butter.

But even with upgraded gear, they were still mortal women fighting a literal army.

"Gah!" Tamsin grunted, stumbling backward as a wolf’s corrosive saliva splashed across her iron pauldron with the acid hissing as it ate into the metal and burned her skin.

Across the line, the girls were panting heavily.

The adrenaline was masking their fatigue, but their stamina bars were dropping precariously low.

A few had minor cuts, bruised ribs from the impacts, and their breathing was growing ragged.

Silas parried a strike, severing a wolf’s leg before looking up at the high palisade wall directly behind the gates.

Eluned was standing there, exactly where he had ordered her to stay. Her silver-green hair whipped wildly in the wind with her emerald eyes tracking every single movement on the battlefield.

She wasn’t casting offensive spells, respecting Silas’s command to let them harvest the kills, but she was vibrating with anxiousness.

"Eluned!" Silas roared over the din of battle. "Support!"

The SSS-Rank Goddess’s face instantly lit up with a radiant breathtaking smile.

"With pleasure, my Lord!" Eluned called out, her melodic voice easily cutting through the horrific roars of the monsters.

She gracefully raised both of her hands toward the bruised-purple sky though she didn’t chant but she simply tapped into her divine authority.

"Aura of Genesis: Overgrowth..." she whispered.

Instantly, a massive, pulse-wave of pure, blinding emerald light erupted from her body.

The sheer density of her SSS-Rank mana completely drowned out the dark, necrotic energy of the Umbral Basin as a gentle shimmering green rain began to fall exclusively over Silas and the twenty women of the Vanguard.

The effects were miraculous.

The moment the green light touched Tamsin’s shoulder, the acid burn completely vanished, leaving behind flawless unblemished skin.

Brida’s bruised ribs instantly healed and the heavy suffocating exhaustion plaguing the girls’ muscles evaporated in a fraction of a second.

[System Alert: Aura of Genesis is active. All Vassals have received ’Absolute Restoration’. Health is locked at 100%... Stamina is locked at 100% for the next 10 minutes...]

The girls’ eyes widened in sheer disbelief. They weren’t just healed; they felt like they could rip a mountain in half with their bare hands.

They possessed infinite stamina.

"They can’t hurt us!" Vanya screamed, laughing maniacally as she charged forward. "The Goddess protects us!"

Empowered by infinite stamina and wielding Tier 2 magical weapons, the Vanguard turned into an absolute meat grinder.

They abandoned their defensive phalanx and waded directly into the burning trenches, slaughtering the remaining beasts with ruthless efficiency.

Silas stood in the center of the carnage, his chest heaving slightly as he watched his girls completely decimate the surviving monsters.

He pulled up his interface, watching the last of the beasts fall.

’We just killed over a hundred Tier 2 monsters in less than twenty minutes,’ Silas thought with a cold sweat breaking out on his neck as the reality of the Sovereign Realm set in.

He looked at the terrifying environment around him.

’How would a regular Lord survive this? If I had stayed in my Red Core, if I didn’t have the Absolute Upgrade System to fix their weapons mid-fight, and if I didn’t pull an SSS-Rank Goddess who grants infinite stamina... this dawn wave would have been a literal death sentence. A standard Lord and ten Level 1 peasants would have been slaughtered in ten seconds.’

The world was cruel and it didn’t care about fairness.

Just as Silas was lowering his blade, thinking the wave was finally broken, a massive glaring red holographic tab suddenly violently expanded in the center of his vision.

[WARNING: MINI-BOSS DETECTED.]

The ground beneath Silas’s boots violently shuddered. It wasn’t the rolling thunder of a horde this time.

It was the heavy singular earth-shattering footfalls of something massive.

From the absolute darkness of the twisted treeline, the heavy trunks of the Ironwood trees were violently ripped out of the earth by their roots and tossed aside like toothpicks.

Stepping out into the clearing was a nightmare made flesh.

It was a Corrupted Ursine, but it was three times the size of the bears they had just fought.

It stood easily twenty feet tall on its hind legs, its body covered in a sickeningly thick carapace of jagged glowing purple bone armor.

Miasma literally leaked from its jaws, killing the black grass wherever its saliva dropped.

Silas immediately triggered his Lord [Appraisal] skill.

[Monster: Corrupted Ursine Overlord]

[Mini-Boss Rank]: Tier 3

[Description]: An apex predator of the Umbral Basin. Possesses hyper-dense bone plating that negates low-tier magic and physical strikes. It is highly aggressive and highly lethal.

The massive Overlord let out a roar so powerful it actually generated a physical shockwave, snuffing out the remaining pitch fires in the trenches.

"Focus fire on the big one!" Tamsin yelled, pulling her bowstring back.

Fenna, Alys, and Morwen unleashed a barrage of mana-arrows from their upgraded bows.

The glowing projectiles slammed directly into the boss’s chest and shattered harmlessly against its thick bone plating, barely leaving a scorch mark.

"It’s too thick!" Fenna shouted in panic.

Rowena stepped forward, her hands glowing with frantic blue light as she rapidly carved a offensive rune into the air. "Sunder!"

A massive blade of pure arcane energy shot forward, striking the beast directly on the knee.

The rune exploded with tremendous force, kicking up a massive cloud of dust but when the smoke cleared, the Tier 3 Boss hadn’t even flinched. It slowly turned its glowing, blood-red eyes toward Rowena, dropping to all fours.

"Fall back!" Silas roared, stepping perfectly in front of the Rune Weaver, his golden aura flaring to its absolute maximum.

He gripped his Umbral-Forged blade with both hands.

’I can cut it,’ Silas calculated rapidly. ’My weapon is Tier 2, but with 20 Vitality and my Gold Core, I can crack that armor if I hit the exact same spot multiple times.’

It would be a brutal bloody fight.

"My Lord!"

The melodic, utterly calm voice echoed from above.

Silas glanced up. Eluned was still standing gracefully on the edge of the high palisade wall.

Her arms were resting politely in front of her as she looked completely bored by the towering, terrifying Tier 3 Boss currently preparing to charge them.

"May I?" Eluned asked politely, tilting her head with a soft smile. "It is rather loud, and I believe you have gathered enough resources for the morning."

Silas looked at the Goddess, then looked at the twenty exhausted girls standing behind him.

He didn’t need to be a hero right now... He needed to be a smart Lord...

"Eradicate it, Eluned," Silas commanded.

Eluned’s smile widened into something truly terrifyingly divine.

"As you wish."

She simply raised her right hand, pointing her slender index finger directly at the charging Tier 3 Mini-Boss.

The ambient mana in the entire Umbral Basin violently warped, rushing toward her fingertip in a suffocating vacuum.

The sky physically darkened as a microscopic bead of pure, hyper-compressed SSS-Rank nature mana materialized at the tip of her finger.

"Nature’s Execution..." she whispered.

BOOOOOOOOOOM!

The sound completely shattered the sound barrier. A blinding, hyper-condensed beam of pure emerald light shot from her finger.

It moved so fast it practically deleted the space between the wall and the boss.

The beam struck the Corrupted Ursine Overlord directly in the chest.

There was no struggle... There was no resistance... The Tier 3 bone plating, the massive muscles, and the corrupted flesh simply ceased to exist...

The sheer overwhelming destructive power of the SSS-Rank magic instantly vaporized the entire upper half of the massive beast, turning it into fine dissipating ash before it could even register the pain.

The beam continued straight through the boss, carving a massive smoking trench through the necrotic forest behind it for nearly two miles, completely leveling everything in its path.

The lower half of the boss’s legs stood frozen for a single second, before slowly toppling over into the dirt with a heavy, pathetic thud.

The battlefield fell completely utterly silent.

The remaining monsters lurking in the shadows of the forest took one look at the sheer devastation and immediately turned and fled deeper into the Unknown Zone, completely breaking the dawn wave.

Silas stood frozen, his eyes wide as he stared at the two-mile-long trench carved into the earth.

’...Holy shit.’

Up on the wall, Eluned lowered her hand, brushing a stray lock of silver-green hair behind her ear.

She looked down at Silas, her terrifying divine aura completely vanishing as she offered him a bright incredibly cute smile and waved happily at him.

"I did it, my Lord!" Eluned called out cheerfully. "Did I do well? Am I useful?"

Silas couldn’t help it.

He raised his Umbral-Forged Mythril Blade high into the air with the black metal catching the light of the morning sun finally breaking through the purple clouds.

"You did perfectly!" Silas shouted back to her, before turning to his awe-struck troops. "Vanguard! The dawn wave is broken! The territory is secure!"

The twenty women stared at the decimated boss, stared at the Goddess, and then stared at their Lord. And then, they erupted.

"FOR LORD GRAVES!" they screamed, a massive, deafening cheer of pure victory that echoed across the entire Umbral Basin.

They clashed their steel shields together and hoisted their bows into the air with their loyalty maxed out beyond measure.

As the cheers washed over him, a massive pristine golden tab suddenly materialized in front of Silas’s face.

It wasn’t a standard notification. It was a global broadcast from the Sovereign Realm.
