Chapter 35: Going To War [IV]
"My Lord," Rowena spoke up, taking a cautious step closer to him.
Her heavy blue robes dragged heavily in the muddy water, completely ruined by the slop.
Her delicate brow was deeply furrowed in extreme concern.
"The amount of blood from the hounds has thoroughly saturated the water supply in this crater as the concentration of gore is incredibly high. By all standard survival metrics and basic magical ecology, the scent of the slaughter should have instantly drawn dozens of lesser scavengers from the surrounding ridges to feast."
Silas narrowed his blue eyes, looking out over the dark churning expanse of the flooded quarry.
The gray rain battered the surface of the water, creating a rippling texture that made it impossible to see beneath the surface.
She was entirely correct.
The Umbral Basin was primarily defined by its relentless aggressive hunger.
Every creature in the dark was starving.
A fresh kill site, especially one reeking of heavy black blood and fresh meat, was essentially a blaring dinner bell for every desperate mutation within a five-mile radius.
Scavengers should have been crawling out of the woodwork to fight over the scraps.
Yet, as Silas actively tapped into his core and utilized his highly refined, Gold Core-enhanced sensory perception to sweep the immediate area for hostile mana signatures, he felt absolutely nothing.
There were no chittering insects hiding in the dark rock crevices... There were no secondary packs of hounds howling in the distant, rain-obscured treeline... There wasn’t even the faint scuttling of a bottom-feeder in the shallows...
The entire western crater had fallen into a completely unnatural silence, broken only by the heavy drumming of the rain hitting the water.
It felt very wrong.
’The scavengers aren’t coming...’ Silas realized as his mind pieced the concerning environmental clues together. ’They aren’t ignoring the massive amount of blood in the water... They are probably terrified so they are actively avoiding this specific crater because it already belongs to something else... Something massive probably.’
"Shields up!" Silas roared, instantly snapping his mythril blade back into a highly defensive and dropping his center of gravity. "Fall back to the elevated rocks! Now!"
The booming command hit the squad like a physical blow. Aeliana didn’t ask questions as her discipline was locked in.
She instantly reached out and grabbed the nearest, heavily shivering rookie by the collar of her iron breastplate, forcefully dragging the exhausted girl backward toward the jagged black spires jutting higher out of the mud.
Before the rest of the highly disoriented rookies could scramble to the safety of higher ground, the flooded quarry violently responded to their presence.
It started as a deep loud subterranean tremor.
The violent vibration originated directly beneath the darkest deepest section of the flooded basin, exactly where they had just been standing mere moments ago.
The ancient bedrock groaned with a deafening, echoing crunch that violently rattled the Vanguard’s teeth inside their skulls.
The murky blood-stained water in the center of the crater began to violently churn.
It rapidly expanded, rotating into a massive dangerous whirlpool that aggressively sucked the floating corpses of the dead Mud-Hounds down into the pitch-black depths.
"Brace yourselves!" Rowena shouted, slamming her staff deep into the rock to anchor her footing as a powerful tidal wave of muddy water washed aggressively over their boots, nearly sweeping the remaining off-balance rookies away.
Bursting violently from the absolute center of the swirling chaotic vortex was the undisputed apex predator of the western ridges.
[Target Analyzed: Mire-Drake Matriarch (Tier 3 Boss)]
[Warning: Extreme seismic manipulation detected.]
The beast was absolutely colossal.
It easily rivaled the size of a heavy military siege wagon, measuring a terrifying eighty feet from its heavily armored, crocodilian snout to the tip of its jagged whip-like tail.
Its anatomical structure resembled a massive corrupted alligator but its overarching biology had heavily mutated to perfectly dominate the muddy flooded terrain of the basin.
Its dark green slippery scales were completely reinforced by massive compressed plates of magically infused stone.
The bedrock armor completely covered its spine, its broad shoulders, and its massive skull, transforming the beast into an incredibly dense living fortress that looked entirely immune to standard iron weaponry.
The Mire-Drake Matriarch did not immediately blindly attack the squad.
She dragged her colossal, heavy torso aggressively onto a massive slab of submerged rock, raising her heavily armored head toward the bruising gray sky.
The weight of her body visibly crushed the stone beneath her claws.
The Matriarch unhinged her massive, cavernous jaws and let out a roar.
"RAHHHHHHHHHH!!"
The roar was a highly concentrated powerful concussive shockwave of atmospheric pressure.
The warping distortion wave violently tore through the heavy rain, vaporizing the falling water instantly before slamming directly into the Vanguard’s formation with the physical force of a swinging battering ram.
The impact of the sonic sound wave was staggering.
Silas braced his heavy boots, his Gold Core flaring brightly to flawlessly anchor his center of gravity against the bedrock.
The concussive force washed over him, completely unbothered by the immense pressure but the mortal heavy infantry girls standing behind him were completely overwhelmed.
The five rookies screamed as the concussive force violently picked them up off their feet and threw them backward off the slick elevated rocks.
Their heavy boots entirely lost traction on the wet stone, and they tumbled heavily, crashing down into the deep churning slop of the lower basin with a series of heavy splashes.
"Get up!" Aeliana commanded, fighting through the painful, disorienting ringing in her pointed ears.
She scrambled frantically to the edge of the rocks, dropping to her knees and reaching her pale hand down toward the struggling newbies thrashing in the water below But the Tier 3 Boss was not a mindless raging brute.
She possessed a terrifying cunning born of centuries of survival at the top of the Umbral Basin’s food chain.
The Matriarch didn’t blindly charge the armed dangerous Sovereign standing perfectly balanced on the high ground.
She recognized the threat he posed. Instead, her glowing, sickly-yellow, entirely reptilian eyes locked directly onto the five panicked rookies who represented the scattered disoriented prey struggling helplessly in the mud.
The massive beast slammed her heavily armored, boulder-sized front claws directly into the flooded earth with bone-shattering force.
[Warning: Hostile Terrain Manipulation Activated.]
The muddy water directly beneath the five rookies violently shuddered.
The Matriarch actively, aggressively channeled her incredibly dense, earth-aligned magical energy directly into the flooded crater. The standard, slippery mud instantly pressurized. The spell turned the entire lower basin into a massive, violently swirling vortex of highly restrictive, incredibly deep magical quicksand.
The rookies shrieked in terror as the solid ground entirely vanished beneath them.
"I’m stuck! I can’t move my legs!" one of the girls cried out, dropping her heavy iron shortsword into the slop in a blind panic as the highly pressurized mud instantly sucked her boots down past her ankles.
The more they struggled to pull their legs free, the faster the magical quicksand consumed them, utilizing their own energy against them.
Within three terrifying seconds, the thick mud had aggressively swallowed their shins, actively pulling them deeper into the earth under the crushing, undeniable weight of their own heavy iron breastplates.
The trap was flawlessly executed, completely immobilizing the absolute weakest links in the formation and leaving them entirely defenseless in the open for the Matriarch to devour at her leisure.
"Rowena, pull them out!" Silas ordered with his voice cracking like a whip.
He immediately stepped off the safety of the rocks and splashed heavily down into the shallows, his superheated mythril blade raised high, intending to draw the Matriarch’s attention before she could snap her jaws around the trapped girls.
"I can’t!" Rowena yelled back, her knuckles turning entirely white around her wooden staff with her face pale with absolute dread as she frantically calculated the magical physics. "If I use a Gravity Well to pull them out of the quicksand, the multiplied gravitational pressure required to break the suction will instantly, violently crush their legs!"
The Matriarch let out a low, deeply satisfied rumble that vibrated through the dense mud, rattling the loose jagged black stones at the perilous edge of the flooded quarry.
RRRRRRRUMBLLLLLE!
It was a physical force that resonated in the chest cavities of the Vanguard, vibrating through the iron plates of their armor and rattling their teeth.
Seeing her prey hopelessly, perfectly pinned in the swirling vortex of her magical quicksand, the colossal beast coiled her massive armored crocodilian legs beneath her.
The thick, magically infused stone plates that acted as her natural armor scraped and ground against the submerged bedrock with a sickening scraping noise.
She prepared to launch her entire eighty-foot, siege-wagon-sized body directly across the span of the crater with her unhinged jaws ready to consume the five trapped, screaming girls in a single devastating blood-soaked bite.
Aeliana stared at the massive beast, her refined mind running complex arcane calculations in a fraction of a heartbeat.
She could feel the heavy density of the beast’s earth magic anchoring the slop, turning the natural terrain into a deadly pressurized weapon.
’The mud is actively pressurized by superior earth magic...’ Aeliana analyzed, her green eyes glowed with fierce determination as the freezing monsoon rain plastered her pristine silver hair directly to her pale cheeks. ’I cannot out-muscle a Tier 3 Boss’s elemental control since her raw output dwarfs mine by several orders of magnitude. The density of her mana is simply too vast but... I do not need to overpower her. I just need to change the state of the matter.’
Aeliana didn’t fire her signature, hyper-compressed starlight beam.
She completely bypassed her standard, highly destructive offensive spellbook, digging deeply into the versatile, highly advanced arcane foundations of her Royal Elven heritage.
She ignored the freezing rain, ignored the terrifying roar of the beast, and focused entirely on the elemental composition of the battlefield.
’I will ensure that these girls survive!’
She slammed both of her pale trembling palms directly against the slick, rain-washed black stone of the elevated ridge she stood upon.
"Glacial Lock!" Aeliana shouted.
She forcefully injected a massive, highly concentrated surge of her entire remaining 1200 mana pool directly into the solid bedrock beneath her fingertips.
FWOOSH!
The temperature in the immediate vicinity of the swirling quicksand plummeted so violently and so suddenly that the heavy, falling sheets of rain instantly turned to jagged razor-sharp hail.
CRACK-CRACK-CRACK!
The hail bounced off the iron armor of the rookies as a blinding, pale-blue arcane geometric array violently expanded outward from Aeliana’s palms.
The intricate, glowing magical circle raced rapidly down the wet, jagged rocks and crashed directly into the swirling pressurized mud where the rookies were hopelessly trapped up to their waists.
The magical reaction was instantaneous and highly destructive to the environmental trap.
The frost magic violently clashed with the Matriarch’s earth manipulation.
Thick jagged glaciers of dark dense ice violently erupted across the churning surface of the quicksand.
The freezing magic aggressively consumed the slop as the blue light spider-webbed through the muddy water and instantly flash-freezed the swirling sucking vortex into a solid, highly uneven landscape of hard permafrost-level ice.
The five rookies gasped collectively, taking in huge, desperate lungfuls of the freezing air as the crushing pressure on their legs completely vanished.
The magical quicksand was entirely neutralized, leaving their heavy iron boots locked firmly and safely into the newly formed solid icy footholds.
"Pull your boots free! Climb the ice!" Aeliana commanded with her breath pluming thickly in the suddenly freezing air as the massive mana expenditure caused her pale hands to tremble violently against the black stone.
She had drained her core to absolute zero to save them but the Mire-Drake Matriarch did not halt her terrifying assault.
Infuriated that her highly lethal, perfectly executed trap had been forcefully disabled by a mere fragile mortal standing on the rocks, the massive beast roared, entirely ignoring Silas on the high ground.
ROOOOOAAARRR!
’I really want to cut off your head...’
