Chapter 185: You’re choosing her over me?

Like he already knew her answer before she could even speak it. And maybe he did. Julian knew her too well now. He knew the way she reached for him in her sleep. The way her voice softened whenever she said his name.

The way she looked at him was like he was the only safe place left in her world. He knew. Amara swallowed nervously.

"What if..." she started weakly. "Julian, what if I..."

"You can’t say it." His voice was teasingly soft, but there was emotion underneath it. Amara froze.

Julian smiled slightly wider now, looking almost unfairly handsome in the soft morning light despite the exhaustion in his eyes.

Because even now, even after everything, he looked at her with absolute certainty. "You can’t say you don’t love me," he murmured. Amara’s throat tightened instantly.

"Come here." Before she could react, Julian gently pulled her back against his chest again. His arms wrapped around her carefully, protectively. For a few seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then quietly, he rested his chin against her shoulder. "I was where you are once," he admitted softly. Amara listened silently.

"When I first found out..." His breathing slowed. "All I wanted was the truth." His fingers brushed slowly against her arm. "I thought knowing would fix everything."

A sad little smile crossed his face. "But then I realized something." Amara turned slightly toward him. Julian looked down at her with tired honesty.

"The truth doesn’t always make pain disappear." His voice softened further. "Sometimes it just changes the shape of it." Amara’s eyes filled slowly again. Julian kissed her temple gently before continuing the massage on her shoulders.

"And slowly," he whispered, "I started accepting the possibility that love might have to exist beside uncertainty." His hands moved carefully over the tension still trapped in her body.

"And eventually..." He smiled faintly. "You’ll accept it too." Amara leaned back against him quietly after that. Not because the fear was gone. But because somehow... Being in Julian’s arms made the future feel survivable.

Amara stayed quiet in his arms for a long moment.

Julian’s hands were still resting gently on her shoulders, his touch slow and comforting, and for the first time in what felt like forever, the noise inside her head began to quiet down.

Then softly..."I love you, Julian." The words slipped out before she could stop them. Simple. Honest. Completely unguarded. Julian went still behind her.

Not because he was surprised. Because hearing it still affected him every single time. A slow smile spread across his face, softening the exhaustion in his eyes. "I know," he whispered.

Amara rolled her eyes faintly through the emotion, making him laugh quietly under his breath. Then his arms tightened around her waist as he pulled her fully against his chest.

"And I love you more." His voice dropped lower when he said it, warm and certain against her ear. Amara closed her eyes briefly, letting herself melt into him. God. This man.

Even after all the pain, all the chaos, he still held her like she was the best thing that had ever happened to him.

Julian rested his chin lightly against her shoulder, holding her from behind while morning light spilled softly across the room. Neither of them moved for a while.

They simply stayed there, tangled together in silence. Breathing. Existing. Trying to hold onto this small, peaceful moment before reality caught up with them again. Then... A knock sounded at the door.

Julian sighed dramatically without letting go of her. Amara smiled slightly. "Ignore it," he murmured immediately.

Another knock came. Longer this time. Julian groaned softly against her shoulder like a man personally betrayed by the universe.

"Whoever it is," he muttered, "they are ruining an extremely important moment." Amara laughed quietly for the first time that morning. The sound alone made Julian smile.

Finally, he loosened his hold just enough for the door to open. Madam Vale stepped inside carrying a breakfast tray herself. Not a maid. Her. The sight alone surprised Amara slightly.

Madam Vale was not a woman who carried trays. Yet there she stood in elegant cream silk, balancing a tray filled with tea, fruit, toast, and warm porridge, as if this were the most natural thing in the world.

Her eyes immediately softened when they landed on Amara. "Well," she said lightly, "good morning." Julian narrowed his eyes suspiciously. "You stole that from the maid."

Madam Vale looked completely unapologetic. "I did." She walked further inside carefully before placing the tray on the small table near the bed. Then she looked at Amara again with a faint smile.

"Can I speak to my daughter for a moment?" Julian’s head snapped toward her instantly.

"Mother." The single word sounded deeply offended. Madam Vale ignored him beautifully.

"Please."

"Absolutely not," Julian replied immediately. "Now is not the time." Amara blinked in surprise while Madam Vale looked amused.

"You cannot steal my wife right now," Julian continued seriously. "We are having a moment." Madam Vale stared at him for a second before laughing softly under her breath.

"My goodness," she murmured. "You are obsessed." Julian looked entirely unashamed.

"Yes." Amara burst into quiet laughter again. Julian looked at her immediately, as if hearing her laugh was worth every embarrassment in the world.

"See?" he told his mother calmly. "I’m making progress. She smiled twice already." Madam Vale shook her head fondly.

"Julian."

"No."

"Julian."

"She’s emotionally fragile." Amara turned toward him with disbelief. "I am literally sitting right here."

"And I am protecting you," he replied with complete seriousness. Madam Vale pinched the bridge of her nose. "Honestly, you are impossible."

"Thank you."

"Julian," Amara said gently, trying not to laugh again. "Come on." He looked genuinely betrayed.

"You’re choosing her over me?"

"She’s your mother."

"And you’re my wife," he argued immediately. Madam Vale gasped dramatically. "I carried you for nine months."

"And I appreciate your sacrifice deeply," Julian replied calmly. "But respectfully, I saw her first this morning." Amara finally pushed lightly at his arm, laughing through the lingering sadness still sitting inside her chest.
