Chapter 1011: Undefeated Season

In 1978, the NFL officially restructured its format, increasing the regular season from 14 games to 16. At the same time, playoff spots were expanded from eight to ten, adding two wild card positions.

Although it only added two games, which might not seem like much from a numbers perspective, the physical and mental demands of professional football are far more grueling than one might imagine. A change of this magnitude had a direct and far-reaching ripple effect across all aspects of the game.

Even in the era of 14 regular-season games, the only team to achieve an undefeated season was the 1972 Miami Dolphins. In the 16-game era, the 2007 New England Patriots were the only team to accomplish such a feat, which was considered an almost impossible miracle to replicate.

Here are some numbers to show the comparison:

Since the year 2000, only six teams have finished the regular season with 14 wins: the 2001 St. Louis Rams, the 2003, 2004, 2007, and 2010 New England Patriots, the 2004 Pittsburgh Steelers, the 2005 and 2008 Indianapolis Colts, the 2006 San Diego Chargers, and the 2011 Green Bay Packers.

In other words, a 14-win season has happened almost every year, with the only exceptions being 2000, 2002, and 2009. This shows that there is usually a dominant team in the league, but even with such a strong performance, going from 14 wins to 15 is an incredibly difficult journey.

Also since the millennium, only three teams have achieved 15 wins: the 2004 Pittsburgh Steelers, the 2007 New England Patriots, and the 2011 Green Bay Packers.

Just one additional win separates a huge number of teams. This is mainly due to the NFL’s special rules and regulations, which prevent any one team from being absolutely strong or absolutely weak. The perceived strength and weakness are relative, and even the best-performing teams are bound to have ups and downs over a long season.

Therefore, the journey from 15 wins to 16 wins has only been accomplished once: by the 2007 New England Patriots.

The first undefeated season in 1972 was followed by the second in 2007, a gap of 35 years. The first undefeated season in the 16-game era took 29 years to achieve after the league was restructured in 1978. The long wait, the grueling schedule, and the difficult challenges were all very apparent.

Everyone in the league believed that 2007 was a myth, an unrepeatable myth. Even the New England Patriots themselves would find it difficult to replicate that special season.

But who would have known that just five years later, the miracle would happen again? And this one was even more unbelievable! Even more insane!

After being in a slump for eight seasons, the San Francisco 49ers made a powerful comeback in 2011, making the playoffs with an excellent 13-3 record and becoming the biggest dark horse of the year. This season, the 49ers continued to excel, playing at a high level with remarkable consistency, finishing the regular season undefeated and becoming the number one favorite to win the championship.

This is a miracle! This is a myth!

An undefeated season once again!

When the game entered the fourth quarter, journalists all over the country were already busy writing their stories. As soon as the referee blew the final whistle, major news outlets immediately updated their websites, with headlines celebrating the San Francisco 49ers’ historic achievement.

In less than 60 seconds, more than 300 media outlets published news stories. Like the fireworks on the Fourth of July, every media outlet, whether they were related to sports or not, rushed to report the news. The stories spread like wildfire.

ESPN: "The San Francisco 49ers Did It! Undefeated Season!"

Sports Illustrated: "Perfect Season Achieved! San Francisco 49ers Make History! Chinese-American Quarterback Writes a Hollywood Fairytale!"

Sports Business Daily: "The 2007 Myth Returns, the San Francisco 49ers Achieve an Undefeated Season!"

Yahoo Sports: "They’ve Reached Immortality! Jim Harbaugh + Lu Ke = 16 Wins!"

CBS Sports: "History Made! The League’s Second Undefeated Team Is Here! The San Francisco 49ers Return to the Peak!"

The New York Times: "A Night of Records. Witness Lu Ke’s Journey from an Unknown to the Peak of a Perfect Season. Reality Is Always More Exciting Than the Movies!"

The Los Angeles Times: "A More Legendary and Beautiful Journey Than Any Hollywood Film: Lu Ke Proves He’s Not a Second Kurt Warner. Lu Ke Is Lu Ke!"

Chicago Tribune: "Unexpected? Yes. A Dark Horse? No Surprise! The San Francisco 49ers Sweep Their Opponents, Winning Their 16th Game of the Season!"

The Washington Post: "Who Can Defeat the San Francisco 49ers? In the Regular Season, No One. What About the Playoffs?"

Time Magazine: "Unstoppable! The San Francisco 49ers Defeat Their Opponents, Winning Their Final Game of the Season and Completing the Undefeated Feat, Earning Their Place in History!"

Amidst the massive news tsunami, the San Francisco local media didn’t lag behind. Their simple yet powerful headlines were considered the best of the year.

The San Francisco Chronicle: "16 Games. 16 Wins."

There were no extra words, no fancy embellishments, no long sentences. It was a simple, clear statement that released all the emotions San Francisco had held for 18 years. It wasn’t just about the undefeated season; it was about the years of suppression and silence that could now finally be released without reservation.

Even more incredible was the social media response.

On Twitter, there was an average of 10,000 tweets per second. While it still didn’t break the record set by last year’s "chicken soup game" or the playoff divisional game, this figure still placed it in the top five of Twitter’s data surges, clearly showing the attention and anticipation from the entire league.

No one had expected the San Francisco 49ers to actually complete an undefeated season!

It’s true that the 49ers were almost unstoppable this season. It’s true that after defeating the New England Patriots, it seemed no one could stop them. It’s true that the 49ers had reached their most cohesive state after two seasons of working together. It’s true that the Arizona Cardinals weren’t the best team to play the spoiler...

But when the victory was officially achieved, the emotions of surprise and astonishment still erupted, because the San Francisco 49ers were not the New England Patriots.

When the 2007 New England Patriots made history, they were a mature, top-tier team with three championships in four years. The undefeated season seemed like a natural result of everything coming together. The 2012 San Francisco 49ers, however, were a young team that had just been revived after an eight-year slump. A young, inexperienced squad was the main force, and they relied on their youthful energy to run over their opponents. A perfect season in this situation was completely unexpected.

Whether it was doubt or admiration, complaints or jealousy, cheers or curses.

No matter if the fans liked it or not, the San Francisco 49ers had ferociously completed an undefeated season. And so, a massive wave of excitement swept across social media.

One of the most telling examples was that Lu Ke’s personal Twitter account was tagged over 290,000 times in less than an hour, a historical record that was impossible to break. All eyes were on this Chinese-American, undrafted, second-year quarterback.

After a season of proving himself, the doubts about his being "Chinese-American" and "undrafted" had almost disappeared, because in his second year, his skill spoke for itself. But the result was even more surprising. This second-year quarterback’s overwhelming dominance completely changed the entire league’s attitude.

In the face of a perfect 16-0 record, no one could say anything negative. The keywords "Chinese-American," "undrafted," and "second-year" had now become the perfect embellishments for this miraculous journey. What could be more exciting than a story of an underdog rising to the top? Nothing!

Most importantly, what did it matter if others didn’t like it? The San Francisco 49ers fans supported and loved him, and that was enough. As for the haters and the jealous ones—

Can’t handle it? Deal with it!

Just like at Candlestick Park right now.

The game was over, but the fans weren’t leaving. The whole stadium, inside and out, was chanting the same name in unison: "Bambi! Bambi! Bambi!"

The rhythmic chant was like a drumbeat from the depths of the earth. The pulse of the land beat beneath their feet, and the veins of the planet flowed before their eyes. The vast red ocean of fans was a roiling, boiling mist that stretched out, turning the entire Bay Area a faint pink. Even the roaring ocean became docile, its waves joining in the aural frenzy that created a powerful, unending ripple of energy.

The pounding rhythm allowed every fan, every player, every coach, and every spectator to feel as one.

For a moment, it was as if the soul of this stadium, this city, this ocean, and this land was powerfully and majestically coming together to forge a champion’s heart, which was now beating strongly. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

Although they were still a ways away from the "forging a champion’s heart" mission—the requirement was for the San Francisco 49ers to make it to the Super Bowl—at this moment, Lu Ke could truly feel that pulse and that beat, steady and powerful, in his own chest.

From his dazzling debut at the Rose Bowl to the unified heart of Candlestick Park, Lu Ke was like a giant who had awakened and was slowly rising to his feet. He had a powerful, world-changing strength. Listen, that was the call from the universe, echoing majestically between heaven and earth.
