The Natives of This World Are Fierce
Chapter 25: Waiting by the Stump for the "Rabbit
Doudou and Qin Xiaoxia were kicked out. Afterward, the front flap of the previously open tent was lowered from the inside by the "Witch."
"Sigh, the Witch... I didn’t even get to see her Witchcraft..."
Doudou sighed, looking down.
"Sigh, what a beauty..."
Qin Xiaoxia sighed under his breath.
The two were clearly disappointed about different things.
However, the sight of the lunchbox that girl had been eating stirred the hunger in their bellies.
At Doudou’s insistence, Qin Xiaoxia bought four lunchboxes. The two of them then paid to rent a "duck pedal boat" and went out onto the amusement park’s lake to eat lunch.
"HEHEHEHE..."
Doudou expertly used the chopsticks he had only recently learned how to handle, letting out a sly laugh as he ate his lunch.
"Ta-da!"
As if presenting a treasure, he pulled something out from inside his loose-fitting clothes.
...
Su Su was cleaning up the scattered grains of rice in her tent. She hesitated for a moment when she picked up the chicken leg, but in the end, she just took out a tissue, wiped it off, and started gnawing on it.
’Mm, this tastes amazing!’
As someone of mixed Hua and European descent, she often split her time between living in the country and abroad with her family. What she missed most was the food from Hua Country.
It was really hard for her to throw away a perfectly good-looking chicken leg.
Still, she would have to go buy another lunchbox.
Just as Su Su was wondering what dishes to get later, she suddenly noticed that the Crystal Ball she had placed in the very center of her table was gone.
She threw aside her broom and the chicken leg and rushed to the table.
She lifted the dust cover and peered under the table, but a frantic search around the tent turned up nothing.
Of all the Crystal Balls in the tent, that was the only one not for sale. It was a gift from her maternal grandmother.
The loss sent Su Su into a panic. She blamed herself for being careless, but she quickly remembered who else had been inside.
"Those two!!"
Forgetting all about eating and without even changing her clothes, she dashed out of the tent to find the two from before.
It wasn’t quite lunchtime yet, so the amusement park was still teeming with wandering visitors.
As a blonde beauty wearing a black cloak, Su Su easily attracted the curiosity of those around her. Quite a few even took out their phones to take pictures and record videos.
The more attention she drew, the more lost Su Su felt.
There were people everywhere. Where was she supposed to look?
She had no choice but to ask her colleagues at the park for help.
She was worried about how this incident, happening on her very first day, would affect her job.
...
Qin Xiaoxia spat out a mouthful of cola with a PFFT.
"When the hell did you steal that?!"
Doudou’s old habit had flared up again. He had actually stolen one of the Crystal Balls from the House of Destiny.
"This is a crime, you know? A crime! Crap, I wonder if they have security cameras there. My whole damn reputation is ruined because of you!"
"Go put it back!"
Doudou hugged the Crystal Ball, unable to part with it.
"No, I won’t! This one is special!"
"Special my ass! Are you going to return it or not?"
Qin Xiaoxia put down his chopsticks and tried to snatch the Crystal Ball.
"I won’t..."
Just then, the music playing over the amusement park’s broadcast system was suddenly interrupted and replaced by the voice of a staff member.
"Hello, valued guests. We apologize for interrupting your fun and your meals. Due to an oversight on our part, an unopened attraction was not properly supervised, resulting in the loss of a Crystal Ball from our House of Destiny. If any guest has found or seen it, please return it or inform a park employee. This Crystal Ball is not for sale; it is the personal property of the House of Destiny staff member. Thank you for your cooperation!"
Qin Xiaoxia had just managed to snatch the Crystal Ball from Doudou. When he heard the broadcast, his eye couldn’t help but twitch.
"Well, this isn’t fun anymore."
How were they supposed to return it now?
It was easy to imagine how the park staff would look at him if he went to return the Crystal Ball.
As for Doudou, that little rascal was completely shameless.
...
Su Su sat listlessly on a soft cushion in the House of Destiny, staring at the lonely dust cover on the table.
’Sigh, I lost my grandmother’s keepsake on my very first day of work...’
Just as she was thinking this, her vision blurred.
The Crystal Ball on the table suddenly reappeared out of thin air.
Su Su couldn’t help but rub her eyes.
’What is happening?’
She looked up and around. There was no one there but her.
She reached out and touched the Crystal Ball. Its icy-cold surface told her it wasn’t a hallucination.
From astonishment to joy, and then to confusion, Su Su couldn’t tell if she had just been dreaming.
Her work in fortune-telling and precognition was abstract, but often, these intuitions and spiritual insights were surprisingly accurate.
Although her clients would marvel at how magical it was, as a Fortune-Teller, she was never truly confident when delivering the results of a divination.
But as a half-baked Spirit Medium, she was inclined to believe in Supernatural Powers, and she had once seen her grandmother speak for the dead.
She instinctively thought of the two people who had just entered her tent.
’That’s right. The House of Destiny isn’t even open yet. How did they get in? It couldn’t have been due to an employee’s carelessness.’
(It was, in fact, due to an employee’s carelessness.)
Then she recalled the child who could jump several meters in a single leap.
’Maybe they came in here on purpose!’
At this thought, Su Su stood up and rushed out of the tent, but aside from a few scattered tourists milling about during lunchtime, there was no one else to be seen.
That’s right, Su Su’s real name was actually Feiya Su. She had adopted the more Hua-style name ’Su Su,’ which was a playful nod to her favorite snack, crispy candy.
The little girl she once was had been endlessly fascinated by such mysterious things, a fascination that hadn’t faded even now, as evidenced by her current profession.
The Crystal Ball’s reappearance out of thin air gave Su Su immense room for imagination.
Her grandmother’s kind face appeared in her memory, and her childhood words seemed to echo in her ears.
"Feiya, there are many, many things in this world that must be regarded with reverence..."
She calmed her heart, emptied her mind, focused her Perception, and stared intently into the Crystal Ball.
Vague, illusory images gradually began to surface.
A sea of fire, a burning, vibrant purple.
"Ah."
Su Su cried out, clutching her head. A stabbing pain forced her to stop the divination.
In her past divinations, she could usually never tell if the images she saw were her own imagination or a true glimpse of the "future" from the Crystal Ball.
According to her grandmother, Su Su was a very gifted child.
(PS: Crystal Ball gazing, a form of scrying, has high requirements for both the ball and the diviner, and possesses a long history.)
But in all her countless divinations, both real and imagined, nothing like this had ever happened before.
’Is this the backlash from a weaker being prying into a stronger one?!’
The faint, burning ache in her head reminded Su Su that the enchanting purple was no illusion.
Never before had she been so certain that her divination was an absolute success.
THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP...
That was the sound of Su Su’s heart beating faster and faster.
Recalling it now, even the man’s graying hair seemed so mysterious.
And now, she had only one thought in her mind.
’Find them! I absolutely cannot miss this opportunity!’
As for what kind of opportunity, she herself couldn’t say.
First, she explained to the park management that the Crystal Ball had been recovered and she no longer wished to pursue the matter. Then, she promptly took a leave of absence on her very first day of work.
Sometimes she had to admit, her good looks came in handy. She believed that if she had a more ordinary face, her supervisor might not have been so understanding.
After getting the day off, Su Su didn’t go home. Instead, she changed into her regular clothes and quietly made her way to the amusement park entrance.
...
Around 5 PM, the amusement park was nearing closing time.
Qin Xiaoxia and Doudou pretended to be casual and carefree, but were actually preparing to leave the park with extreme caution.
Because Doudou’s theft had been announced over the broadcast, they were afraid the park had already called the police to catch the "suspects," even though Doudou had already returned the item.
Getting caught was a small matter; losing face was a big one.
And so, the two of them nervously and distractedly lingered in the park until closing. Figuring everything should be fine by now, they finally joined the departing crowd to leave.
But just as they stepped out into the plaza at the park’s exit, Qin Xiaoxia detected something with his Perception and turned his head in a specific direction.
Su Su had foolishly waited at the entrance all afternoon, her eyes constantly scanning the passing crowds.
The park would be closing soon. If she still hadn’t seen them by then, it would mean she had missed her chance.
Her spirits began to sink, and her eyes started to feel sore. She couldn’t help but rub them, and when she opened them again...
She discovered that the two people she had been waiting for all afternoon were watching her from a short distance away, a gentle smile on one of their faces.
...
Qin Xiaoxia smiled awkwardly.
’We hid all afternoon and she still wouldn’t let us off the hook. Women are terrifying. My reputation is toast for sure...’
