The Snake God with SSS Rank Evolution System
Chapter 221: Evolution’s Threshold
Adam’s crimson eyes widened as the system notifications scrolled across his vision. A slow, satisfied smile spread across his face.
"Hoo... already time for me to evolve."
He dismissed the interface and turned his attention inward, examining the three evolution paths laid out before him. Each one pulsed with potential, promising different strengths, different futures.
Path 1: Ouroboros Progenitor
"The serpent that consumes itself is reborn eternal. Your wounds close before they bleed, and death finds no purchase in your flesh."
◇ Evolved Form: Ouroboros Progenitor
◇ Primary Boosts: Greatly Enhanced Vitality & Regeneration, Balanced Strength
◇ New Trait: Eternal Cycle: Your regeneration accelerates dramatically. Wounds that would cripple or kill others heal within moments. You can survive injuries that would be fatal to most beings, and your body automatically purges most toxins and curses over time.
◇ New Skill: Ouroboros Rebirth (Active): Consume a portion of your own life force to instantly regenerate even critical wounds. Can be used while conscious or triggered automatically upon receiving a fatal blow (once per day). Leaves you temporarily weakened but alive. (High Mana Cost)
Path 2: Draconic Cataclysm Serpent
"Unleash destruction. Your draconic heritage awakens, turning you into a force of raw, devastating power."
◇ Evolved Form: Draconic Cataclysm Serpent
◇ Primary Boosts: Greatly Enhanced Strength & Vitality, Balanced Agility
◇ New Trait: Cataclysm Heart: Your draconic essence surges. All destructive skills gain increased area of effect and damage. Your fire breath intensifies, and physical strikes carry concussive shockwaves.
◇ New Skill: Cataclysm Roar (Active): Unleash a devastating roar that damages enemies in a wide cone, shatters barriers, and applies fear to weaker foes. Can destroy terrain and structures. (High Mana Cost)
Path 3: Eclipse Sovereign Serpent
"Transcend flesh. Merge dragon and serpent into a single sovereign entity, and let your mind become your greatest weapon."
◇ Evolved Form: Eclipse Sovereign Serpent
◇ Primary Boosts: Greatly Enhanced Intelligence & Agility, Balanced Strength
◇ New Trait: Eclipse Sovereignty: Your mental and spiritual presence solidifies. Psychic attacks against you are significantly reduced, and your own mental abilities are amplified. Your soul grows stronger, providing resistance to possession and soul-based attacks.
◇ New Skill: Mind Eclipse (Active): Project your consciousness outward, overwhelming a single target’s mind. Can be used for interrogation, memory extraction, temporary control, or causing psychic damage. Higher-level targets may resist. (High Mana Cost)
Adam studied each option, his brow furrowing in thought.
"Hmm... a difficult choice."
Lilith drifted closer, her crimson eyes watching his face with quiet curiosity.
"What is it, Adam?"
Adam glanced at her, then back at the ethereal paths only he could see.
"Oh. I’m going to evolve. We’ll be here for a while."
Ignis, still eyeing the wyvern corpse with predatory interest, perked up. Her flames flickered with excitement.
"Ohh! Adam’s evolving! Great, great!"
She turned back to the meat, apparently satisfied with that explanation.
Lilith’s smile softened. "Then I will prepare a nest for you."
Before she could move, Isolde stepped forward, her pale eyes sharp with alarm.
"Wait a moment." Her voice was tight, controlled. "You’re really going to evolve here? In this forest?"
Adam shrugged. "Yes. Sooner is better, right? Besides, we need to rest anyway."
Isolde’s jaw tightened. Her hands curled into fists at her sides.
"That’s true. But this is the Dleguin Forest." She enunciated the name as if it should mean something. "It’s filled with powerful monsters. We can’t just recklessly rest here."
Lilith tilted her head, a faint, mocking smile curving her lips.
"Hmm. Are you afraid, vampire?"
Isolde’s eye twitched.
Ignis let out a sharp laugh. "Ahaha! Scaredy-cat!"
Isolde’s face flushed—whether from embarrassment or anger, it was hard to tell.
"That’s not it!" Her voice rose, sharp and defensive. "This is very dangerous. We should avoid unnecessary fights!"
Adam raised a hand, cutting through the argument. His voice was calm, almost bored.
"Relax. I don’t sense any powerful monsters nearby." He glanced at Isolde. "And you said yourself that the wyvern we just killed was territorial, didn’t you? No other monsters will want to come here."
Isolde’s mouth opened. Closed. Opened again.
No words came.
Her shoulders sagged slightly, the tension draining from her frame. She looked away, her voice barely a whisper.
"...Fine. Do what you want."
Adam’s lips curved into a faint smile.
"That’s what I thought."
He turned to Lilith, his expression softening.
"A nest, you said?"
Lilith’s crimson eyes gleamed. She raised her hands, and threads shot from her fingers—silver and white, fine as spider silk, strong as steel. They wove between the trees, looping around branches, pulling taut, forming a structure that grew with each passing moment.
Within minutes, a cocoon hung suspended between two oaks—larger than the one Lilith had used for her own evolution, its surface shimmering with a soft, silver light.
Adam studied it, his eyebrows rising.
"That’s... bigger than I expected."
Lilith stepped closer, her hand brushing his arm.
"You’re bigger than me," she said simply. "You need more space."
Adam’s face flushed slightly. He cleared his throat.
"Right. Of course."
He walked toward the cocoon, his footsteps steady. At its base, he paused, glancing back at his companions.
Ignis had already lost interest, her attention fixed on carving chunks of wyvern meat with her claws. Lilith stood watching him, her crimson eyes soft. Isolde had retreated to the edge of the clearing, her back against a tree, her hood pulled low.
Adam took a breath and stepped inside.
The interior of the cocoon was dark at first—then it began to glow. Soft, pulsing light filled the space, warm and inviting. The walls were smooth, almost silken, and they yielded slightly when he pressed against them.
He sat cross-legged in the center, closed his eyes, and called up the evolution interface.
[Evolution Points: 7954/6000]
[Evolution Requirement Met]
[Please select your evolutionary path:]
1. Ouroboros Progenitor
2. Draconic Cataclysm Serpent
3. Eclipse Sovereign Serpent
Adam stared at the options, his mind churning.
Adam’s brow furrowed as he weighed each path, his internal voice thoughtful.
’Hmm... Ouroboros is good. Like giving me an extra life, but it burns life force to activate. Risky, but useful in a pinch.’
His gaze shifted to the second option.
’And Cataclysm... that name is terrifying. Like it would bring destruction wherever I go. Will I become a force of annihilation if I choose this path?’ A pause. ’But the skill is strong, and it would definitely increase my attack power. Cataclysm Roar... shattering barriers, damaging everything in a wide cone...’
His eyes moved to the final path.
’And the last one is Eclipse. This one seems to focus on the mind and soul. I could gain resistance to internal attacks—possession, psychic assaults, things like that. And I could attack through thoughts, extract memories, maybe even control weaker foes.’ He frowned. ’But that only works on enemies weaker than me. Against a stronger opponent, it’s useless. They’d just shrug it off.’
He stared at the three glowing paths, his mind churning.
’Survivability. Destruction. Or mental dominance...’
His hand hovered over the options, indecision flickering across his face.
’What do I need most right now?’
He thought of Alice, still sleeping within his soul. Of the Void entity that had attacked her—something that targeted the mind, the soul, the very essence of a being.
’If I face that thing again... mental resistance could be the difference between life and death.’
His fingers drifted toward the third path.
But then he thought of the battles ahead.
’We don’t know what’s waiting for us out there. Could be armies. Could be monsters. Could be something worse than anything we’ve faced so far. If I can’t protect them with raw power, what good is mental resistance when we’re all dead?’
His hand pulled back, frustrated.
’And Ouroboros... an extra life sounds amazing. But burning life force? That’s basically trading my future for a second chance. How many times can I use it before I burn through everything I have?’
He shook his head slowly.
’Cataclysm is tempting. Raw destruction. Overwhelming force. Sometimes that’s the only answer—hit them so hard they can’t hit back.’
He stared at the paths, his jaw tight.
’Strength alone won’t save us. But neither will hiding behind mental shields.’
He pulled his hand back, frustrated.
’Damn it. This is harder than I thought.’
Adam’s internal voice turned toward the system interface, sharp and direct.
"Hey, system. Is this the final evolution? Or are there more branches after this?"
The interface shimmered, text scrolling across his vision in response.
[System Response: Evolution paths presented are not final. Each path leads to further evolutionary branches at higher level thresholds.]
[Ouroboros Progenitor: Leads to further evolutions at higher thresholds. Focuses on immortality, regeneration, and survival. The path extends beyond this form.]
[Draconic Cataclysm Serpent: Leads to further evolutions at higher thresholds. Focuses on raw destructive power and area devastation. The path extends beyond this form.]
[Eclipse Sovereign Serpent: This is the peak of mental and soul-based evolution. No further branches beyond Eclipse Sovereign Serpent.]
Adam’s eyes narrowed as he read.
’I see. So Eclipse is the final peak for mental evolution. No further branches after that. But Cataclysm and Ouroboros both have more stages after this.’
He leaned back, thinking.
’If I choose Eclipse now, I’ll reach the end of that line eventually. No more mental upgrades after that. But if I choose Cataclysm or Ouroboros, I’ll have room to grow further... more evolutions, more power spikes later.’
He was silent for a long moment.
Then his expression shifted—a flicker of clarity, of decision.
’Alright. I know what I need.’
